Identify the species or cultivar on your label first: a Vermillionaire hybrid, cigar flower, false heather, blue waxweed and candy corn plant differ in form, winter tolerance and propagation. A useful starting point for several of these profiles is a sheltered spot with well-drained soil and sun or partial shade; watering, pruning and winter care depend on the particular plant.
First, identify which Cuphea you have
Use the plant label where possible. The table compares the specific plants covered by the profiles below; it is not a complete comparison of every Cuphea. Hardiness references are not interchangeable: Missouri Botanical Garden gives a USDA zone range for Vermillionaire, while the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) uses UK hardiness codes for its profiles.
| Plant | Profiled form and intended use | Size or flowering | Propagation supported by the profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuphea Vermillionaire | Compact hybrid/cultivar, profiled for annual, container or houseplant use in St. Louis | 1.50–2.50 feet tall and 1.00–2.00 feet wide; blooms May to October in the St. Louis profile | Tip cuttings |
| Cuphea ignea (cigar flower) | Spreading evergreen sub-shrub; RHS rating is for UK conditions | Up to 40 cm tall | Seed |
| Cuphea hyssopifolia (false heather) | Compact, bushy, spreading evergreen shrub; RHS rating is for UK conditions | Up to 45 cm tall | Seed |
| Cuphea viscosissima (blue waxweed) | Bushy, half-hardy annual | Purple flowers through summer into autumn | Seed; sow directly where it is to flower |
| Cuphea micropetala (candy corn plant) | Species-specific guidance from Clemson Cooperative Extension | Not stated in the 2024 source | Division |
Vermillionaire’s dimensions, bloom period and care details belong to that cultivar’s Missouri Botanical Garden profile; do not apply them to the genus as a whole. The profile describes it as winter-hardy in USDA Zones 8–10 and commonly grown as an annual in St. Louis. The RHS lists H2 for C. ignea and C. hyssopifolia; H2 means plants tolerate low temperatures but do not survive freezing. That UK code is not a USDA zone equivalent.
Choose light and placement for the plant and climate
Sun to partial shade is a workable starting point for several named Cuphea, but the right exposure varies. Missouri Botanical Garden recommends full sun for Vermillionaire while noting that it tolerates part shade. RHS allows full sun or partial shade for C. ignea and C. hyssopifolia and advises shelter and protection from hot sun; it likewise recommends shelter from hot sun for C. viscosissima. In a hot-summer garden, afternoon shade is a sensible option for those RHS-profiled plants.

For C. micropetala, Clemson Cooperative Extension’s 2024 guidance supports well-drained soil and regular watering while the plant establishes; the source information here does not establish a specific light recommendation for this species. Check its own label or species-specific guidance rather than assuming every Cuphea wants identical sun.
Use well-drained soil and water according to establishment
Well-drained soil is the most consistent soil recommendation across the profiles: RHS specifies it for C. ignea, C. hyssopifolia and C. viscosissima, and Missouri Botanical Garden recommends average, medium-moisture, well-drained soil for Vermillionaire. Clemson Cooperative Extension also recommends well-drained soil for C. micropetala.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
There is no supported watering interval that fits all Cuphea. Vermillionaire tolerates some drought but performs best with regular moisture, according to Missouri Botanical Garden. Clemson recommends watering C. micropetala regularly until it is established. For other species, the cited profiles do not supply a shared schedule. Use the species label, soil drainage, weather and whether the plant is newly established to guide watering; avoid keeping soil persistently wet.
Plan container and winter care around local conditions
For Vermillionaire, Missouri Botanical Garden says a container-grown plant may be overwintered indoors in a bright, sunny location, at temperatures in the 60s, with watering reduced slightly. This is cultivar-specific guidance, not a promise that every Cuphea can be kept through winter.

The RHS H2 ratings for C. ignea and C. hyssopifolia indicate tolerance of low temperatures but not freezing under the UK rating system. They should not be translated into USDA zones. If you do not know the plant’s identity or your winter conditions are borderline, growing it in a container can make protection easier, though survival is not guaranteed.
Prune only as the named plant needs
- Vermillionaire: Missouri Botanical Garden notes that it can become leggy as the season progresses. Pinch stem tips as needed to maintain a compact shape.
- C. ignea and C. hyssopifolia: RHS recommends pruning in spring if needed.
- C. viscosissima: RHS says pruning is not needed.
These different recommendations are a reason not to cut every Cuphea back hard by default. The cited sources do not establish a general pruning prescription for all species.

Match propagation to the species
- Vermillionaire: Missouri Botanical Garden lists tip cuttings.
- C. ignea and C. hyssopifolia: RHS recommends seed propagation.
- C. viscosissima: RHS recommends seed and says to sow directly where the plant is to flower.
- C. micropetala: Clemson Cooperative Extension’s 2024 guidance supports division.
Choose seed, cuttings or division according to the identified species rather than treating one method as best for the genus. If buying seed or spring nursery plants, confirm the species or cultivar on the label; availability is not established by the growing guidance.
Check for problems on Vermillionaire
Missouri Botanical Garden lists aphids, whiteflies and spider mites as pests to watch for on Vermillionaire, along with powdery mildew, leaf spot and root rot as possible problems. This list is specific to that cultivar’s profile, not evidence that all Cuphea commonly have these issues. The same profile identifies legginess as a possible seasonal shape problem; pinching stem tips can help maintain form.
