Crossandra (Crossandra infundibuliformis), also called firecracker flower, grows best with warmth, bright light, humidity and evenly moist, well-drained soil. In a warm, frost-free climate it can grow outdoors; where temperatures fall, grow it in a pot that can be moved indoors before cold weather.
Choose where to grow crossandra
Native to India and Sri Lanka, crossandra is a tropical flowering plant suited to outdoor gardens in warm regions and to containers or indoor growing elsewhere. The University of Florida IFAS lists USDA hardiness zones 9–11 as suitable, but local exposure and microclimates matter. In the UK, the Royal Horticultural Society recommends protected cultivation under glass and outdoor planting only in a very warm, frost-free location; its UK hardiness categories are not directly interchangeable with USDA zones.
- Warm, frost-free garden: Grow it outdoors as a perennial where conditions stay warm.
- Cooler climate: Use a container so you can bring the plant inside before cold weather, or treat it as a seasonal outdoor plant.
Give it bright light and protection from harsh conditions
Outdoors, choose partial shade, such as morning sun with afternoon shade. UF/IFAS says crossandra can tolerate up to four hours of direct sun, with protection for the rest of the day; its Charlotte County guidance describes morning sun and afternoon part shade as ideal. Indoors, place it in bright, indirect light. Too little light can stop flowering, and heavy rain can damage its delicate blooms.
Keep the soil moist, drained and warm
Plant crossandra in a well-draining medium enriched with organic matter. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged, and do not let it dry out completely. Check the soil rather than following a fixed watering calendar: containers, light, warmth and season all affect how quickly it dries. NC State recommends using warm water because cold water can shock the roots.

Crossandra also appreciates humidity. If indoor air is dry, UF/IFAS mentions misting the foliage; NC State suggests setting the pot above the waterline on a pebble tray. Ensure the pot drains freely whichever method you use.
Protect crossandra from cold and adjust seasonal care
Cold can cause leaf loss. UF/IFAS reports leaves beginning to drop when temperatures reach the 50s °F, and NC State warns that temperatures below 55 °F can cause leaf loss. Texas A&M’s interior ornamental guidance gives a more conservative threshold of about 65 °F. These are cautions from different growing contexts, not guarantees of safety at any particular temperature, so keep the plant warm and move container plants inside before cold weather.

UF/IFAS recommends a balanced fertilizer monthly in spring and summer, then every eight weeks in fall and winter. Follow the fertilizer label and account for slower growth during winter.
Encourage blooms and manage seed pods
Remove faded flowers to encourage more blooms. The firecracker name refers to seed pods that can open explosively in high humidity or after rain. If you do not want seeds scattered, trim spent flowering stems before the pods mature.

Propagate from cuttings or seed
Take stem or tip cuttings in spring or early in the growing season. NC State recommends seed-starting mix, rooting hormone, warmth and humidity to support cuttings. The RHS also lists semi-hardwood cuttings and seed propagation. No reliable rooting time or success rate is established in these care references, so allow the plant time to root rather than expecting a set timetable.

Serious pest problems are not described as typical, but inspect the foliage periodically. UF/IFAS and NC State identify spider mites and whitefly; NC State also lists occasional aphids and mealybugs. If flowering stalls, check whether the plant is getting enough light. Leaf loss points to cold exposure, while damaged flowers may reflect heavy rain.

Recognize named varieties without assuming a performance ranking
UF/IFAS lists ‘Florida Sunset’ and ‘Orange Marmalade’; NC State also lists ‘Lutea’ and ‘Mona Wallhead’. These are examples of named cultivars, not a comparative ranking: the cited growing references do not establish consistent, controlled performance differences among them.
