Grow beardtongue (Penstemon) in full sun, fast-draining soil, and with restrained watering once established. The genus is unusually diverse, so identify the species or cultivar before deciding how much shade, moisture, winter protection, or pruning it needs.

Beardtongue, or Penstemon, usually grows best in full sun, sharply drained soil, and a watering routine that lets the root zone dry somewhat between deep waterings. Most established plants need little fertilizer. The important qualification is that “beardtongue” covers a large and varied genus: species and cultivars differ in height, hardiness, drought tolerance, shade tolerance, and winter-moisture requirements. Start by identifying the plant you have, then adjust these general guidelines to its label or species-specific instructions.

What is beardtongue?

Beardtongue is the common name for Penstemon, a diverse genus native primarily to North America. Plants may form low mats, compact mounds, or tall upright clumps. Their flowers are generally tubular and two-lipped, with colors including purple, blue, pink, red, and white.

The name comes from the flower’s hairy sterile stamen, called a staminode. It protrudes into the flower and looks somewhat like a tongue with a beard. Depending on the species or cultivar, plants may bloom from spring into early summer, with some hybrids and individual plants flowering longer or reblooming after deadheading.

500+ Penstemon Spectabilis Seeds for Planting - Perennial Showy Flower Seed
  • Planting Area: Penstemon spectabilis thrives in the western and southwestern US, tolerating hot temperatures and low rainfall.
  • Use: Ideal for borders, rock gardens, or wildflower meadows, its tall flower spikes and vibrant blooms add vertical interest and color to landscapes.
  • Planting: For spring planting, scatter seeds on loose, well-draining soil, press lightly without covering, and keep moist until germination. Full sun required.
  • Planting Tips: In fall, sow seeds directly in the garden before frost, allowing natural cold stratification for spring germination. Ensure seed-to-soil contact.
  • Attract Pollinators: The blooms attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Do not infer a plant’s care requirements from the common name alone. A drought-adapted western species may decline in constantly damp soil, while an eastern or moisture-tolerant species may need more regular irrigation than a rock-garden type.

Choose the right Penstemon for your site

Matching the plant to the garden is often more important than changing the garden to suit a poorly matched plant. Before buying, consider sunlight, soil drainage, summer heat, winter moisture, elevation, and the plant’s mature size.

Garden condition Penstemon types to consider What to check
Dry, sunny, rocky, or gravelly soil Many western species adapted to lean soil and limited supplemental water Heat tolerance, hardiness, and whether the plant dislikes winter wet
Moist soil or partial shade Some eastern, alpine, or wetter-habitat species How much consistent moisture and afternoon shade the species requires
Containers or smaller borders Compact hybrids and selected cultivars Mature height, spread, container hardiness, and flowering period
Native or pollinator garden A species native or well adapted to your region Local climate, soil, elevation, and availability from a reputable nursery or seed source

A species is a naturally occurring plant, while a cultivar is a selected form propagated for particular traits such as flower color, height, bloom length, or habit. Seedlings may vary, and seed from a named cultivar may not reproduce that cultivar exactly. If preserving a cultivar’s characteristics matters, use a nursery-grown plant, division where appropriate, or cuttings from a known parent.

Light requirements

Give most Penstemons at least six hours of direct sun per day. Strong light generally produces sturdier stems, better flowering, and clearer flower color. A site with morning and afternoon sun is preferable to bright indirect light or deep shade.

Some plants need an adjustment for climate and habitat. In very hot climates, at high elevations, or with species from wetter or high-elevation environments, afternoon shade can reduce heat stress and prolong flowering. Eastern species may tolerate partial shade, but shade should not be the default recommendation for the genus.

Weak, floppy growth and few flowers commonly indicate insufficient light, although poor drainage, excessive fertilizer, an unsuitable species, or natural aging can cause similar symptoms.

Soil and drainage: the most important care factor

Use soil that is well drained, aerated, and free of compaction. Many Penstemons perform particularly well in raised beds, slopes, rock gardens, gravelly borders, sandy soil, or planting beds amended to improve pore space rather than simply increase fertility.

Avoid low spots where rain collects, heavy soil that remains saturated, and locations that stay wet through winter. For many species, wet soil is more damaging than lean soil. Persistent moisture around the crown can lead to crown or root rot, especially during cool, rainy periods or after flowering when water use declines.

If the existing ground is heavy, improve the site before planting by creating a raised or sloping bed and incorporating material that improves drainage and aeration. Do not rely on repeated fungicide treatments to compensate for a site that stays wet; correcting the planting conditions is the more durable solution.

Penstemon species do not all prefer the same soil pH. Some western types perform well in neutral to slightly alkaline soil, but adding lime or other amendments without evidence can create a new problem. Use a soil test if pH is uncertain.

How to plant beardtongue

  1. Choose the planting window. Plant nursery-grown Penstemon during the local planting season recommended for that species. Avoid planting into waterlogged or frozen ground.
  2. Prepare the site. Remove competing weeds and loosen compacted soil. Prioritize drainage and air space over rich, heavily amended soil.
  3. Dig the hole. Make it approximately as deep as the root ball and wide enough for the roots to spread without circling.
  4. Set the crown correctly. Position the plant at the same level at which it was growing in its container. Planting too deeply increases the risk of crown problems.
  5. Backfill and water once. Firm the soil gently around the roots and water thoroughly to settle the planting area.
  6. Establish without saturating. Keep the root zone reasonably consistent while roots are developing, but allow excess water to drain away. Do not turn a newly planted Penstemon into a permanently wet plant.

Leave enough space for the plant’s mature spread and provide air movement around the foliage. The correct spacing depends on the species or cultivar’s label rather than the common name.

Watering Penstemon

Newly planted beardtongue needs regular attention while it establishes, particularly during dry spring or summer weather. Water deeply when the root zone is beginning to dry, then allow drainage before watering again.

Once established, many Penstemons are drought tolerant, but drought tolerance does not mean that every plant should receive no water. Eastern and midwestern species, hybrids, container plants, and plants in unusually hot or dry locations may need supplemental irrigation. Conversely, drought-adapted western species can decline if watered on a frequent, shallow schedule.

Use the soil and weather as your guide rather than a fixed daily timetable:

  • Check the root zone with a finger or small hand tool before irrigating.
  • Water thoroughly when the soil is becoming dry at root depth.
  • Allow excess water to drain completely.
  • Reduce irrigation after flowering if the species is adapted to dry conditions.
  • Water containers more often than in-ground plants because containers dry faster.

Overwatering can produce reduced vigor, yellowing, wilting despite wet soil, and eventually crown or root rot. Whenever possible, direct water at the soil rather than spraying the foliage. This is especially helpful in humid or crowded plantings because drier leaves and better air circulation reduce the conditions that favor fungal diseases.

Does Penstemon need fertilizer?

Usually, no routine fertilizer is needed for an established Penstemon growing in ordinary garden soil. Correct sunlight, drainage, and species selection are more important than feeding.

Excess fertilizer can produce soft, overly lush growth, increase weed pressure, and contribute to nutrient runoff. Use a soil test or clear evidence of deficiency before applying fertilizer. Container-grown plants or plants expected to flower for an unusually long period may benefit from light feeding, but fertilizer should remain secondary to proper light and watering.

Do not use fertilizer as the automatic remedy for poor flowering. Too little sun, wet roots, excessive nitrogen, a mismatched species, or a naturally short-lived plant may be the real cause.

Deadheading and pruning

Remove spent flower stalks if you want a tidier plant or wish to encourage a possible second flush of flowers. Rebloom is more likely with some hybrids and species than with others, so deadheading is an option rather than a guarantee.

If you want self-sowing or seed, leave selected flower stalks in place until the seed capsules mature. You do not need to choose between a tidy garden and wildlife value everywhere: deadhead the most visible stems and leave a few capsules for seed collection or birds.

After flowering, some Penstemons can be trimmed back to basal foliage to improve their appearance. Use a lighter touch with species that have evergreen or semi-woody bases. Do not assume that every Penstemon should be cut to the ground immediately after bloom; the correct timing and severity depend on the plant’s growth habit.

Winter care

For many Penstemons, winter success is primarily a matter of choosing a suitable, sharply drained site. Plants in the right location may need little protection.

In colder climates, a loose winter mulch can help protect some plants from temperature swings. Keep heavy, wet, moisture-trapping material away from the crown, especially for species that are sensitive to winter wet. Check both the hardiness rating and the plant’s tolerance of winter moisture; cold temperatures are not the only winter risk.

Container plants are more exposed to freezing than plants in the ground. Use a cultivar rated for your conditions, provide excellent drainage, and follow the nursery’s winter guidance rather than assuming that an in-ground hardiness rating applies unchanged to a pot.

Growing Penstemon from seed

Growing beardtongue from seed can be rewarding, but germination is species dependent. Some Penstemon seeds need cold-moist stratification—a period of moist chilling—before they will germinate.

Depending on the species, gardeners may:

  • sow seed outdoors in fall so natural winter conditions provide the chilling period; or
  • place moist seed in refrigeration for the period specified by the seed packet or species-specific propagation guide, then sow in late winter or spring.

Published protocols vary substantially. One firecracker Penstemon protocol uses cold stratification for up to 112 days, while a propagation guide for another species gives a 30- to 60-day moist-stratification example. These are not universal instructions. Follow the requirements for the exact species, sow shallowly, and do not bury fine seed deeply unless the packet says otherwise.

What to buy for seed propagation

Penstemon seeds are the most direct starting point for growing beardtongue from seed. Choose a species suited to your region and verify whether it needs cold-moist stratification before sowing. A clean seed tray, sterile seed-starting medium, labels, and a way to maintain the required moisture and chilling conditions are useful, but specialized equipment is not automatically necessary.

Seed-grown plants may not come true to a named cultivar. If you want identical flower color, height, or habit, buy a vegetatively propagated plant or use cuttings from a known parent instead.

Propagation by division and cuttings

Division

Vigorous clumps can sometimes be divided in spring or fall. Division is useful for increasing a mature plant while retaining its general characteristics, but it is not suitable for every Penstemon. Taprooted or short-lived species may respond poorly, so check the species before cutting into the crown.

Lift the plant carefully, separate healthy sections with roots and shoots attached, and replant them at the original crown depth. Water to settle the roots, then avoid keeping the divided plants constantly wet.

Softwood cuttings

Softwood cuttings are particularly useful for named cultivars because they preserve the parent plant more reliably than seed. During the growing season, take healthy, nonflowering tip cuttings with a clean, sharp knife. Place them in a free-draining rooting medium and keep the medium evenly, but not excessively, moist while roots develop.

Pests and diseases

Penstemons are often relatively trouble free when grown in the right location, but the following problems can occur:

Problem Likely conditions or symptoms First response
Root or crown rot Wet soil, poor drainage, declining or collapsing growth Improve drainage, reduce irrigation, and avoid planting the crown deeply
Leaf spot, rust, or powdery mildew Discolored or coated foliage, often worse with humidity and poor air movement Improve spacing and air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove badly affected material
Slugs and snails More common in damp, shaded, or heavily mulched sites Reduce hiding places and excess moisture; use locally appropriate controls if needed
Grasshoppers or flea beetle larvae Chewed or ragged foliage Hand-pick where practical; use any treatment strictly according to its label
Seed bugs Most significant when collecting viable seed Inspect developing seed capsules and follow local extension guidance

Sanitation, correct spacing, good drainage, and soil-level watering should come before routine spraying. Because Penstemon flowers attract pollinators, use pesticides only when necessary, target the problem, and follow the product label carefully. Avoid treating open flowers when pollinators are actively visiting.

Beardtongue for pollinators and wildlife

Many Penstemon species provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Some support specialized bee species, and mature seed capsules can provide food for birds.

To increase wildlife value, select a species native or well adapted to your region, avoid unnecessary insecticides during bloom, and allow at least some flowers to mature into seed. A mixed planting of locally appropriate species can provide a longer and more reliable flowering sequence than relying on one cultivar.

Common beardtongue-growing mistakes

  1. Treating every Penstemon the same. The genus includes hundreds of species from different habitats.
  2. Planting in heavy, wet ground. Poor drainage is a common route to crown and root rot.
  3. Overwatering a drought-adapted species. Drought tolerance does not improve when roots remain wet.
  4. Adding fertilizer before diagnosing the problem. Poor sun, excess moisture, or a mismatched cultivar may be responsible for weak flowering.
  5. Assuming seed will reproduce a named cultivar. Use cuttings or a nursery-grown division when uniformity matters.
  6. Removing every seed capsule. Leave some if you want self-sowing, seed collection, or late-season bird food.
  7. Buying without checking regional fit. Native range, winter moisture, elevation, heat, and soil all affect performance.

A simple seasonal care plan

  • Planting season: Install plants at their original crown depth, water thoroughly, and monitor them as they establish.
  • Spring: Check for new growth, weeds, slugs, and overly wet soil. Begin watering according to rainfall and the species’ needs.
  • Bloom: Water at the soil when the root zone is drying. Deadhead for appearance or possible rebloom, or leave selected stems for seed.
  • After flowering: Reduce irrigation for dryland species, trim only as appropriate for the plant’s base, and inspect for disease.
  • Fall and winter: Collect mature seed if desired, divide only species that tolerate it, and use loose rather than moisture-trapping protection in cold climates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sun does beardtongue need?

Most beardtongue grows best in full sun—at least six hours of direct light—but some species tolerate or prefer afternoon shade, particularly in very hot climates or when grown in conditions unlike their native habitat. Too much shade often causes weak growth and fewer flowers.

How often should I water Penstemon?

Water newly planted Penstemon consistently while it establishes. Once established, many species prefer deep watering followed by partial drying rather than constantly wet soil. Drought-adapted western types need less irrigation than some eastern species, hybrids, containers, or plants growing in unusually hot conditions.

What is the best fertilizer for beardtongue?

Usually little or none. In-ground Penstemons generally perform well in ordinary, well-drained soil without routine fertilizer. Test the soil or diagnose a clear deficiency before feeding; poor flowering is more often related to insufficient sun, wet roots, or an unsuitable plant than to a lack of fertilizer.

Do Penstemon seeds need cold stratification?

Some Penstemon seeds need cold-moist stratification, but the required period varies by species. Outdoor fall sowing can provide natural chilling, or moist seed can be refrigerated for the period stated on the packet or in a species-specific guide. Do not use one universal stratification schedule for the entire genus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should beardtongue be cut back after flowering?

Deadheading is optional. Remove spent stalks for a tidier appearance and to encourage possible rebloom in some plants. Leave selected capsules if you want self-sowing, seed collection, or mature seed for birds. Prune the plant’s flowering stems according to its growth habit rather than cutting every Penstemon to the ground automatically.

The Bottom Line

For the best results, choose a Penstemon suited to your climate and soil, plant it in full sun with excellent drainage, water more during establishment than after it matures, and fertilize sparingly. When a plant struggles, check drainage and species fit before reaching for fertilizer or pesticides.
