Monstera deliciosa grows best in bright filtered light, warm indoor temperatures, airy soil, and a pot that drains freely. Water when the top 1–2 inches of mix are dry rather than on a fixed schedule, support the plant as it climbs, and expect fenestrated leaves only as the plant matures and conditions allow.

The reliable way to grow Monstera deliciosa is to give it bright filtered light, warmth, moderate-to-high humidity, a fast-draining potting mix, and thorough watering only when the upper 1–2 inches of soil have dried. Monstera is forgiving, but it is not a plant that thrives on a fixed watering calendar or a pot that stays wet. Read the soil, roots, leaves, and growth pattern, then adjust care to the conditions in your home.

Monstera deliciosa quick-care guide

Need Practical target
Light Bright, indirect light is best; medium light can work. Protect the plant from sudden, intense direct sun.
Temperature Approximately 60–85°F (16–29°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Humidity More than 50% is preferred, although a healthy plant may tolerate a drier room.
Watering Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Let excess water drain completely.
Soil Use a well-draining, organic-rich soilless mix amended with materials such as bark, perlite, or charcoal.
Container Use a pot with a drainage hole. A decorative cachepot should be an outer cover, not the plant’s only container.
Support Provide a moss stick, trellis, bamboo stake, moss pole, or similar support as the plant climbs.
Feeding Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label during active growth; reduce feeding in winter.
Pets Monstera deliciosa is toxic to dogs and cats because it contains insoluble calcium oxalates.

What to expect from a Monstera

The houseplant usually called a Swiss cheese plant is Monstera deliciosa. It is also known as Mexican breadfruit, hurricane plant, or cutleaf philodendron. Despite that last common name, Monstera is not a philodendron. Both plants belong to the arum family, Araceae, but they are different genera.

Young Monstera plants often produce relatively small, solid leaves. As the plant matures and receives suitable growing conditions, its leaves can become much larger and develop splits along the edges and interior holes, known as fenestrations. A new leaf will not necessarily be divided, however. Lack of splits alone is not proof that the plant is diseased. A young plant, a recently propagated cutting, or a plant growing in insufficient light may simply need more time and better conditions.

Monstera is naturally a climbing tropical plant rather than a compact, self-supporting rosette. Expect it to grow upward and outward unless you train it to a support.

Light: bright filtered light is the safest starting point

Place Monstera near a bright window where light is filtered by a sheer curtain, nearby structure, or the room itself. A medium-light position can keep it alive and growing, but brighter indirect light generally supports stronger growth and better leaf development.

“South-facing” or “west-facing” is only a starting point. Window glass, latitude, season, nearby buildings, curtains, and the distance from the window all change the actual light reaching the leaves. Near a bright window with filtered light is usually better than directly against hot glass.

Insufficient light commonly produces long gaps between leaves, stretched stems, smaller growth, and reduced vigor. Move a leggy plant gradually toward brighter filtered light rather than placing it immediately in harsh sun. A sudden increase in intense direct exposure can scorch foliage. If natural light is inadequate, a suitable supplemental grow light can help.

Watering: check the soil instead of following a calendar

Water when the top 1–2 inches of the potting mix feel dry. Insert a finger into the soil or use the weight of the pot and the appearance of the mix as additional clues. Then water slowly and thoroughly until some water exits the drainage holes.

  1. Check the upper layer of soil in several places, especially if the surface is uneven or compacted.
  2. If the top 1–2 inches are dry, water the entire root ball rather than adding a small splash to one spot.
  3. Allow the container to drain fully.
  4. Empty water collected in a saucer or cachepot so the roots are not left standing in it.

There is no universally correct interval. A Monstera in a warm, bright room and a small pot may need water much sooner than a large plant in a cool, dim room. Pot size, root mass, season, temperature, and the composition of the mix all matter.

Overwatering usually means the plant stays wet too long, not that one thorough watering was automatically harmful. Frequent watering, a slow-drying mix, poor drainage, or an oversized container can deprive roots of air and increase the risk of root problems. If soil remains wet for an unusually long time, smells sour, or is accompanied by yellowing and soft roots, investigate the root system and container rather than watering again automatically.

Temperature and humidity

Monstera generally grows well at ordinary indoor temperatures. Penn State guidance gives an approximate preferred range of 60–85°F. Keep it away from cold drafts, exterior doors, unheated windows, and strong blasts from heating or cooling equipment.

Humidity above 50% is preferred, particularly when the plant is actively growing. A Monstera may survive in a drier home if watering, light, roots, and temperature are otherwise suitable, but dry air can contribute to brown or crispy edges.

A clean humidifier is more dependable than repeated misting for raising room humidity. Misting may briefly wet the leaf surface without meaningfully changing the room’s moisture level, and foliage that stays wet in stagnant air can create additional problems. If you use a humidifier, clean it as directed and maintain airflow around the plant.

Choose an airy mix and a pot with drainage

Use a well-draining, soilless potting mix that contains plenty of organic matter. A purchased houseplant mix can be improved with materials such as orchid bark, perlite, or horticultural charcoal. The goal is a medium that holds some moisture but still allows excess water and air to move through the root zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The container must have at least one drainage hole. If you like the appearance of a decorative pot without a hole, keep the Monstera in a separate nursery container and use the decorative vessel as a cachepot. Lift the inner pot out when watering and return it only after excess water has drained.

When to repot

Repot when roots emerge from the drainage holes, the plant is clearly rootbound or unstable, the mix dries unusually quickly, or growth has stalled despite appropriate light and care. Late winter or early spring is a common repotting period, and a growing Monstera may need repotting every one to two years, but the condition of the roots and mix matters more than the calendar.

Move up only modestly—about 2 inches wider than the current container is a practical example. A much larger pot holds more unused, wet mix around the roots and makes moisture harder to judge. Do not bury the stem deeper than it was previously planted.

Give a climbing Monstera a sturdy support

As Monstera grows, its stems and large leaves can become top-heavy. A moss stick, trellis, bamboo stake, board covered with sphagnum moss, or monstera moss pole can provide structure and encourage the plant to grow upward.

Install the support before the plant becomes difficult to handle. Tie the main stem loosely with soft plant ties, leaving room for expansion. Guide aerial roots toward the support so they can contact it, but do not tightly bind, cut, or force them into place. The support helps the plant express its climbing habit; it is not a guarantee that every new leaf will develop fenestrations.

Fertilizing during active growth

Monstera can be fed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer during the growing season. Penn State guidance describes feeding every two weeks during active growth and monthly during winter. In practice, follow the product label and adjust for the plant’s actual conditions: a brightly lit plant growing vigorously uses more resources than one sitting nearly dormant in low light.

More fertilizer is not a substitute for light, drainage, or healthy roots. Excess fertilizer can leave salts in the potting mix and stress the plant. Avoid feeding a severely wilted, waterlogged, recently repotted, or root-damaged Monstera until the underlying problem is corrected. If salt buildup is suspected, thoroughly flush a drainage-capable pot with clean water and allow it to drain, provided the plant’s roots are otherwise healthy.

A balanced houseplant fertilizer is a task-specific option, but it should remain secondary to getting light, watering, and drainage right.

How to propagate Monstera

Monstera can be propagated by stem cuttings, air layering, or division. The critical detail is the node. A node is the section of stem capable of producing new growth; it is commonly found near an aerial root and an axillary bud.

A detached leaf or a leaf petiole without a node may remain green for a while, but it cannot produce a new growing stem. It will eventually decline or rot. Do not buy or prepare a leaf-only cutting expecting it to become a complete plant.

Stem-cutting method

  1. Use a clean, sharp tool and choose a healthy section of stem with at least one viable node and axillary bud. Including a leaf and aerial root can improve the starting material, but the node is non-negotiable.
  2. Make the cut below the node. Keep the cutting’s orientation clear so the node is not accidentally planted upside down.
  3. Root it in clean water or a suitable, lightly moist rooting medium. If using water, keep the leaf above the waterline and change the water when it becomes cloudy or foul-smelling.
  4. Provide bright warmth without harsh direct sun. Keep a solid medium moist but not saturated.
  5. Move the cutting into a modestly larger container once it has healthy roots and shows active growth. Avoid placing a small cutting into a very large pot, where excess mix may remain wet.

Water propagation makes root development easy to observe, but roots formed in water may be weaker than roots developed in solid media and must adjust after planting. Rooting time varies with temperature, light, season, node quality, and medium, so a fixed number of days is not a reliable promise.

Air layering allows a node to develop roots while it remains attached to the parent plant. Division is most practical when a mature plant has separable rooted sections. In every method, use clean tools and avoid propagating from a plant showing active pests or serious root problems.

Pruning and cleaning leaves

Remove yellow, badly damaged, or clearly declining leaves with clean tools. If a stem is leggy and you want to redirect growth or take a cutting, prune above a node. Disinfect tools between plants when disease or pests are possible.

Large Monstera leaves collect dust, which can reduce the quality of the leaf surface and makes pests harder to spot. Wipe them gently with a damp cloth. Leaf-shine products are unnecessary and can leave residue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aggressive pruning will not reliably turn a naturally climbing Monstera into a bushy plant. Fuller growth is better encouraged through adequate light, appropriate pruning, propagation, and support.

Monstera troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom What to check first Reasonable next step
Long, stretched stems or large gaps between leaves Insufficient light is a common cause. Move the plant gradually toward brighter filtered light or add suitable supplemental lighting. Avoid an abrupt move into intense sun.
Yellow leaves Check soil moisture, drainage, watering frequency, light, and roots before assuming a nutrient deficiency. Correct the environmental cause. Remove leaves that are clearly finished, but do not use pruning to hide an ongoing root or watering problem.
Brown or crispy edges Consider dry air, underwatering, salt buildup, abrupt sun exposure, and root stress. Match the remedy to the pattern and recent conditions. Check the roots and soil rather than applying one universal fix.
Soil stays wet, smells sour, or roots are soft Persistent wetness, poor drainage, an oversized pot, or a slow-drying mix. Stop automatic watering, inspect the roots, and repot into fresh, appropriately draining mix if the root system and container require it.
No splits or holes in new leaves Plant maturity and light. Juvenile leaves are often solid, and low light can limit vigorous development. Improve conditions patiently. Do not treat the absence of fenestrations alone as a disease diagnosis.
Visible insects, webbing, or sticky residue Inspect leaf undersides, stems, and leaf joints for scale, aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, and fungus gnats. Isolate the plant, improve cultural care, identify the pest, and use a treatment appropriate to that pest and the product label.

When diagnosing a problem, consider several clues together: the newest growth, the oldest leaves, the moisture level several inches below the surface, the drainage hole, recent changes in light, and the condition of the roots. A single yellow leaf does not identify one cause.

Is Monstera toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. Monstera deliciosa is toxic to cats and dogs. It contains insoluble calcium oxalates. The ASPCA lists possible signs including oral irritation, intense burning or irritation of the mouth, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.

Keep the plant, fallen leaves, and pruned material out of reach. If a pet may have chewed or swallowed Monstera, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control. Difficulty breathing or swallowing should be treated as urgent. Pet toxicity is separate from the question of human ingestion; do not describe the plant as generally safe to eat.

A simple maintenance routine

  • Weekly: Inspect leaves, stems, and leaf undersides for pests; check whether the top layer of soil has dried.
  • When watering is needed: Saturate the mix, allow complete drainage, and empty the saucer or cachepot.
  • Monthly: Check that ties are loose, the support is stable, and roots are not emerging in a way that makes the plant unstable.
  • During active growth: Feed according to the label if the plant is healthy and growing.
  • As needed: Wipe dusty leaves, remove declining foliage, and rotate the pot if growth is becoming strongly one-sided.
  • When conditions change: Reassess watering after moving the plant, changing the pot, turning on heating, or entering a darker season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Monstera have no splits?

Not necessarily. Young Monstera plants commonly produce smaller, less divided leaves. Fenestrations are associated with maturity and suitable growing conditions, while insufficient light can limit vigorous growth. A leaf without splits is not, by itself, evidence of disease.

Can I grow a new Monstera from a single leaf?

No. A leaf or petiole without a stem node and axillary bud cannot produce a new growing stem. For propagation, use a stem cutting that includes at least one viable node.

Why are my Monstera leaves turning yellow?

Check the soil moisture, drainage, recent watering frequency, light, and root condition first. Yellowing can have several causes, including prolonged wetness, so do not assume the plant needs more fertilizer or water.

Is Monstera deliciosa safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. Monstera deliciosa contains insoluble calcium oxalates and can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing in pets. Keep it inaccessible and contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control if ingestion is suspected.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Keep Monstera deliciosa warm and in bright filtered light, water only after the upper 1–2 inches of mix dry, use a draining container and airy soil, and provide climbing support as it grows. Diagnose yellowing, browning, and legginess by checking the whole growing environment—not by adding water or fertilizer automatically. Keep the plant away from cats and dogs.
