Water only after the mix has dried, and keep the plant away from pets: jade is listed as toxic to dogs, cats and horses.
Identify the plant
“Jade plant” usually means Crassula ovata; the Royal Horticultural Society lists Crassula argentea as a synonym. Common names can refer to more than one plant, so confirm the botanical identification if you are checking a pet-safety concern or diagnosing a problem. RHS plant profile
Choose a bright spot
Give jade strong natural light. The Missouri Botanical Garden recommends at least four hours of direct sun or twelve hours of bright indirect light. The RHS describes full light as suitable and gives a south-facing window receiving around five hours of light as an example. These are care recommendations, not experimental thresholds; the right placement depends on the conditions in your home.
Very intense light can scorch foliage, according to the RHS. If moving a plant from a dimmer spot into stronger sun, increase its exposure gradually rather than placing it straight into harsh direct sunlight. Missouri Botanical Garden care guidance

Water when the potting mix has dried
Water thoroughly, then let the mix dry before watering again. The RHS advises allowing compost to dry out completely between waterings; the Missouri Botanical Garden advises letting the soil surface dry. In practice, check the mix rather than following a fixed calendar: pot size, light, temperature and mix all affect how quickly it dries.
Water less often in winter, when growth slows. Too much water can show up as wilted or discolored leaves and rubbery branches, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Persistent overwatering can lead to rot and stem collapse. Missouri Botanical Garden care guidance

Use a draining mix and repot when roots need room
Choose a potting medium that drains freely. The RHS recommends cactus compost for jade grown in containers; the Missouri Botanical Garden says standard potting soil can also work if drainage is good. A pot with drainage holes helps excess water escape.
The Missouri Botanical Garden suggests repotting when roots occupy about 80 percent of the pot volume, moving the plant up by one pot size. It also describes dilute fertilizer during the active growing period. Feeding is optional routine care, not a fix for insufficient light or persistently wet soil. Propagate by cuttings, offsets or seed
Jade can be propagated from seed, offsets, or root, stem and leaf cuttings. The RHS lists these methods for spring propagation. The Missouri Botanical Garden describes rooting stem or leaf cuttings in moist perlite or sand; once rooted, pot them as you would a mature plant. Neither source identifies one method as best in every situation. RHS plant profile
Prune and check for pests
The Missouri Botanical Garden says jade can be pruned in spring. Inspect the plant for pests: the RHS lists mealybugs, vine weevils and aphids, while the Missouri Botanical Garden also mentions red spider mite, scale and thrips as possible indoor problems.
