Give a peace lily bright, indirect light, keep its potting mix moderately moist but draining, and adjust care to what the plant and soil show—not to a fixed weekly schedule. With those basics in place, routine checks for light, moisture, crowding and pests can help it grow and flower for years.

Know what a peace lily needs

Peace lilies are Spathiphyllum, members of the arum family (Araceae), not true lilies. Their white, hood-like display is a spathe surrounding a central spadix; the tiny true flowers grow on the spike. The name covers a popular group of species and cultivars. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and North Carolina State Extension offer plant-specific growing guidance.

Choose a suitable spot

Place the plant in bright, indirect light for steady growth and the best chance of flowering. Avoid direct summer sun, which can scorch leaves. Peace lilies tolerate lower light, but North Carolina State Extension notes that deeper shade slows growth and flowering. Keep the plant away from cold drafts and hot radiators.

The RHS gives a general room-temperature range of 12–24°C (55–75°F). North Carolina State Extension also recommends warm daytime conditions and cautions that cold, drafty conditions slow growth. These are general care recommendations, not a substitute for responding to the conditions in your home.

Water by checking the mix, not the calendar

Aim for potting mix that stays moderately moist without becoming waterlogged. Let it dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Empty the saucer rather than leaving the pot standing in water; persistent wetness can lead to root rot. Water somewhat less in winter when growth slows.

Check the mix before watering. How quickly it dries depends on factors such as the plant’s size, pot size and material, light, and growing medium, so a fixed weekly schedule can lead to either overwatering or underwatering. If the plant droops and the mix is dry, water it and let the pot drain; a thirsty peace lily often perks up. If the mix is still wet, check drainage rather than adding more water.

Support healthy leaves

Peace lilies prefer moderate humidity, and dry air can contribute to brown leaf edges. Keep the plant away from radiators and drafts. The RHS suggests a damp-gravel tray or misting and recommends wiping dust from leaves with a damp cloth. Misting alone may not resolve browning: light, watering and fertilizer can also be factors.

Feed lightly while it is growing

Published guidance differs on feeding frequency, so there is no single schedule that applies to every plant and product. The RHS suggests general liquid fertilizer every few weeks from April through October; the University of Florida IFAS recommends a low dose three times a year; North Carolina State Extension recommends quarter-strength fertilizer and flushing the soil between applications to limit salt buildup.

Follow your fertilizer’s label conservatively and avoid overfeeding. Excess fertilizer can burn leaf tips and roots. These schedules are recommendations from different institutions, not instructions to combine into one regimen.

Repot only when the plant needs more room

In spring, check whether roots visibly crowd the pot or whether the mix is drying unusually quickly. If so, move the plant into a well-drained houseplant mix with organic matter and choose a container only a few centimetres wider in diameter. A much larger pot holds more unused mix, which can stay wet too long and increase the risk of root rot. If the plant is doing well and is not crowded, there is no need to repot on a rigid annual timetable.

Propagate a mature plant by division

Spring division is a practical way to propagate a mature peace lily clump. Separate the clump when repotting and pot the divisions into suitable containers with drainage and well-drained mix.

Diagnose symptoms before changing care

What you see What to check What to do
Drooping Check whether the mix is dry or still wet. If it is dry, water thoroughly and let the pot drain. If it stays wet, investigate drainage and possible overwatering.
Brown leaf edges or tips Consider dry air, direct sun, underwatering and recent fertilizer use. Review the plant’s light and watering conditions, keep it away from drafts and radiators, and avoid excessive fertilizer. Do not assume humidity is the only cause.
Yellow leaves Check how wet the mix is and whether water drains freely. Adjust watering based on the mix’s condition; both overwatering and underwatering can be involved.
No flowers Consider whether the plant is in deep shade and whether it is young or recently purchased. Try a brighter spot with indirect light. A young or newly purchased plant may need time to settle.
Signs of mealybugs Inspect leaves, including their undersides. Wipe leaves regularly and keep checking for pests.

These symptoms can have more than one cause. Check the plant’s conditions before making several changes at once. Guidance on symptom causes comes from the RHS growing guide, North Carolina State Extension and Clemson Cooperative Extension.

Keep the plant away from children and pets who might chew it

Peace lilies contain calcium oxalate crystals. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes mouth, tongue and throat burning as a common effect if plant material is eaten. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets who may chew it, and wear gloves when handling it if sap could irritate your skin, as the RHS advises.
