To grow a Christmas cactus from a cutting, take a short stem piece at a joint, root it in a clean, well-draining potting medium, and keep it in bright, indirect light. Avoid waterlogged soil; rooting commonly takes several weeks and timing varies.
What you need
- A healthy Christmas cactus stem tip
- A clean, free-draining potting or rooting medium; a suitable cactus and succulent mix may work if it drains well
- A small container with drainage holes
A sterile, well-draining medium is the main recommendation from the University of Florida IFAS Gardening Solutions. The North Carolina State Extension also recommends moist, well-draining potting mix. A medium that holds too much water can contribute to stem and root rot, so do not use one that stays saturated.
How to take and plant the cutting
- Choose a healthy stem tip. At a joint, gently twist or cut off a short piece. The University of Florida recommends two or three jointed sections; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes sections with two to five flattened stem segments. Both are guidance for short cuttings, not competing exact requirements.
- Optionally let the cut end callus. North Carolina State Extension advises leaving the cutting out for a few days so the cut end can callus. This is a supported preparation method, not a requirement stated by every source.
- Set the cutting in the medium. Place the cut end into moist, free-draining mix in a clean container. Keep the medium damp enough to support rooting, but do not let water pool or leave it waterlogged.
- Provide bright, indirect light. Keep the container in a bright spot out of direct, harsh sun while the cutting roots.
How to care for the cutting while it roots
Check the medium periodically and water as needed to prevent it from drying completely, while avoiding saturation. Do not follow a rigid watering calendar: conditions in the room, container, and mix affect how quickly the medium dries. For an established Christmas cactus, the University of Florida advises watering when the medium begins to dry.
Give the cutting time before tugging or moving it. Iowa State estimates about six to eight weeks for rooting, while the Royal Horticultural Society gives a broader estimate of three to twelve weeks. These are guidance ranges, not guarantees; rooting time depends on conditions.

Can you root a Christmas cactus cutting in water?
Yes. Penn State Extension describes rooting stem cuttings in water before transplanting them into well-draining mix. It is an alternative to rooting directly in potting medium, not an established improvement or guarantee of faster success. For a straightforward approach, the university guidance more consistently supports planting directly into a well-draining medium.

Plants sold as holiday cactus can be mislabeled or confused with related types. Iowa State notes that true Christmas cactus has scalloped stem segments without pointed teeth, while Thanksgiving cactus has pointed projections. If your plant has pointed edges, its common name alone may not identify it reliably.
