For a small puzzle you may want to take apart later, skip the glue: a snug frame can hold it between the glazing and backing. For a permanent display—or a larger puzzle that needs more support—apply puzzle conserver, let it dry fully, and mount it to a rigid backing board before framing. Measure the finished puzzle and frame interior before choosing either method.
Choose whether to glue the puzzle
Glue is not always necessary to hang a puzzle, according to Ravensburger’s jigsaw puzzle FAQ. A frame can hold a smaller puzzle in place without adhesive, keeping the option of removing it later. Gluing bonds the image and is the better choice when you want a permanent display.

Ravensburger recommends backing for puzzles with more than 500 pieces. That is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not a universal engineering threshold. Its examples include plywood or sturdy cardboard; its framing guide also names foam board and MDF for direct mounting. The sources do not provide a load rating, so choose board stiffness and mounting hardware for the puzzle’s size and intended location.
Measure and prepare before framing
- Measure the completed puzzle and the frame’s internal dimensions—not just the outside of the frame. For the glue-free sandwich, a close match helps prevent slipping or a visible gap.
- Whenever practical, assemble the puzzle on a flat, rigid board that can serve as its eventual backing. This avoids lifting and transferring the completed puzzle.
- Check that the puzzle lies flat and that no pieces stick up. Plan how you will lift or flip it before moving it.
- Handle the frame’s glazing carefully and follow the framing guide’s handling advice for the material supplied with your frame.
Frame a puzzle without glue
This method uses pressure from the frame to hold the puzzle between the glazing and backing board. Ravensburger describes it as an easy-to-remove option and says it works best for smaller puzzles; larger puzzles can flex and come apart inside the frame.

- Place the completed puzzle on its backing board, if you assembled it separately. Keep the surface level and avoid bending the puzzle during transfer.
- Clean and handle the glazing according to the framing guide’s advice for the supplied material.
- Set the puzzle between the glazing and backing. Confirm that the frame’s interior dimensions hold it snugly.
- Close the frame and check that the puzzle stays flat and in place before hanging it.
Glue a puzzle for a permanent display
Use puzzle conserver or another adhesive only in line with that product’s directions and its compatibility with your puzzle and backing. Ravensburger’s conserver is intended for Ravensburger puzzles and is applied over the picture surface. Its product instructions specify a sponge applicator and even coverage.
- Lay the puzzle face up on a flat, protected surface. Ravensburger’s product directions name baking paper as an underlay; its framing guide also mentions wax paper or plastic wrap to protect the work surface.
- Apply the conserver evenly across the image and work it into the seams with the supplied sponge applicator. Avoid puddles: Ravensburger warns that excess glue may not dry transparent.
- Let the adhesive dry completely before lifting or framing. Follow the exact bottle’s directions. Ravensburger’s product page gives a one-hour drying statement for its conserver, while its UK guidance recommends allowing a full day; neither time should be treated as a rule for every puzzle glue. If uncertain, wait longer. Framing before glue sets can trap moisture and contribute to warping or shifting.
- For a larger puzzle or direct wall mounting, attach it to a suitable rigid backing. Ravensburger recommends plywood or sturdy cardboard for puzzles over 500 pieces; its framing guide also suggests foam board or MDF for direct mounting.
- Choose an attachment method suitable for both the puzzle and board. Ravensburger’s framing guide mentions double-sided tape, while Loctite’s guide describes gluing a puzzle to foam board. These examples do not establish that every adhesive works with every board or puzzle finish.
- Once the adhesive has dried, place the mounted puzzle in a frame sized to house it, or prepare the backing for direct mounting.
Choose a frame and backing board
Frame size
Measure the completed puzzle before buying a frame. A glue-free display depends on a close fit between the frame interior, glazing, and backing; a glued puzzle still needs enough room to sit flat with its backing. For unusual dimensions, Ravensburger’s framing guide says exact-dimension frames can be ordered from frame shops and galleries.

Backing material
For additional support, Ravensburger names plywood and sturdy cardboard for puzzles with more than 500 pieces. Foam board and MDF are further options identified in its framing guide for direct mounting. Select a board that suits the puzzle and installation rather than assuming one thickness or material works for every display.
Glue
Puzzle conserver is designed for bonding a completed puzzle. Ravensburger’s product directions are specific to its conserver and Ravensburger puzzles; read the label of whichever product you choose for application, compatibility, coverage, and drying instructions.
