How to Get Skunks Out of Your Garden and Keep Them From Coming Back

Skunks usually show up for food, shelter, or grubs. The lasting fix is not a stronger smell repellent. It is removing attractants, confirming the den is empty, and closing the entry with animal-proof materials.

Skunks in a garden are not just a nuisance smell problem. They are usually telling you something practical about the property: food is available, shelter is easy to reach, or the lawn has enough grubs and insects to be worth digging for. The fastest permanent solution is a sequence: identify the activity, remove attractants, confirm whether there is an active den, push the animal out humanely, then close the access point with buried wire mesh or a properly built skirt.

On our job sites, the repeat problems usually happen when a homeowner skips the construction step. A motion light, vinegar rag, or radio may convince a skunk to move for a night or two. If the same deck gap, loose lattice, open crawlspace vent, or soft soil along a shed remains, another skunk can use it later. The goal is not to fight the animal every week. The goal is to make the garden and structure unprofitable to investigate.

Start by Confirming It Is Actually a Skunk Problem

Skunks are usually nocturnal, slow-moving, and non-aggressive when left alone. They also do some useful work around a property by eating grubs, beetles, insects, rodents, and fallen fruit. That matters because the right response is exclusion and attractant control, not poison or panic.

#1 Best Overall
Skunk Scram All Natural Granular Repellent - 6 lb. Bag - Epic
  • Stop skunk damage under your home and around other areas of your backyard by using this granular formula.
  • The smell and taste of the granules provides dual action protection to convince skunks that your yard is dangerous and quickly trains them to avoid the treated areas.
  • Convenient 6-pound resealable bag contains enough product to cover up to 3,500 square feet for all season use. Can be applied as a protective border or evenly spread over the specific areas you'd like to protect.
  • Shields your landscaping, gardens, patios and porches by discouraging skunks from your property.
  • Easy to apply, no spraying or mixing needed. Each application is long lasting and should last around 30 days during normal rainfall and irrigation.

The common signs are specific. In lawns, skunks leave small cone-shaped holes, often 2 to 4 inches across, where they have pushed their nose into turf looking for grubs. In heavier feeding areas, sod may be peeled back or disturbed. In beds and borders, you may see disturbed mulch, shallow digging, or tracks near fence lines. Around structures, look for a musky odor and a burrow opening near a deck, porch, shed, crawlspace vent, wood pile, slab edge, or loose lattice panel.

A skunk track is typically about 1 to 2 inches wide, with five toes and visible claw marks. If you are not sure, place a trail camera facing the suspected route for 2 or 3 nights. A basic outdoor camera often tells you more than a week of guessing.

Check the Pattern Before You Act

One or two holes in the lawn does not always mean a skunk is living on the property. It may only be passing through. A persistent musky odor, repeated digging at the same wall line, and fresh soil outside a covered opening are stronger signs of denning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not seal a suspected den immediately. If a skunk is inside, you can trap it under the structure and create a worse odor, carcass, insect, and sanitation issue. In spring and early summer, there may also be young in the den. That changes both the humane approach and, in many places, the legal one.

Remove the Food Sources First

Most garden skunk problems start with reliable food. Remove the easy food and the property becomes less attractive within a few nights.

Start with garbage. Use cans with tight lids, preferably latched or stored inside a garage or enclosure until pickup morning. A bungee cord is better than a loose lid, but a locking lid is better still. Rinse cans that smell like meat, pet food, or diapers. If trash sits outdoors for 5 or 6 days between pickups, odor control matters.

Bring pet food indoors every night. A bowl of dog or cat food left outside after dusk is one of the simplest ways to train wildlife to visit. Clean up birdseed below feeders, especially sunflower seed piles. Use a tray-style seed catcher or temporarily remove feeders if skunks, raccoons, or rodents are active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compost should be managed carefully. Yard waste and leaves are fine, but food scraps, grease, eggs, meat, dairy, and sweet fruit waste can become wildlife bait. If you compost kitchen scraps, use a rodent-resistant enclosed bin and keep the lid secure.

Other common attractants include fallen fruit, poultry feed, beehives, dense brush, stacked lumber, and open crawlspace access. Pick up fruit every 1 to 2 days during drop season. Store poultry feed in metal cans with lids. Keep firewood and material stacks raised off the ground and away from the house when possible.

Find Out Whether the Skunk Is Denning

Before sealing anything, confirm whether the den is active and whether the animal has left. This is where a slow, careful approach saves money.

Watch the suspected opening around dusk from a safe distance, or set a trail camera for several nights. Skunks usually leave around dusk or after dark and return before morning. If you see repeated use of the same opening, treat it as an active den.

Bonide Repels-All Animal Repellent Granules, 3 lbs. Ready-to-Use Deer & Rabbit Repellent, Deter Pests from Lawn & Garden
  • STRONG REPELLER - This unique blend of ingredients causes mild irritation to animal's nasal passages. When an animal touches, tastes, or smells Repels-All Animal Repellent, it triggers the natural instinct to escape/avoid and the pest leaves.
  • ANIMALS AFFECTED - Our granules repel species of squirrel, deer, rabbit, chipmunk, mouse, skunk, rat, beaver, raccoon, porcupine, bird, groundhog and more rodent species.
  • DEFEND YOUR GARDEN AND HOME - Apply around homes, gardens, garbage cans, barns, swimming pools, sheds, woodpiles, decks, patios, and campsites to prevent grazing, chewing, gnawing, nibbling and browsing damage to plants and property.
  • BIODEGRADABLE - Repels-All granules are biodegradable and will not harm animals, lawns, gardens, flowerbeds, or other desirable plants when used as directed.

You can also use a simple newspaper or flour test. Loosely stuff newspaper into the opening or place it lightly across the entrance. Do not pack it tightly. If it is pushed aside overnight, something is using the opening. For a hard surface, a light dusting of flour just outside the entrance can show tracks by morning. Use these tests for 2 or 3 nights, because wildlife activity can vary with weather and food availability.

Be Extra Careful During Nesting Season

If the activity is under a deck, shed, porch, slab edge, or crawlspace in spring or early summer, assume there could be a mother with kits until proven otherwise. Sealing the opening can separate young from the mother or trap them inside. That is a welfare problem and a practical construction problem, because trapped animals can cause odor and cleanup costs that are far higher than a normal removal visit.

For suspected young, call a licensed wildlife professional or local animal control for guidance. In many states, the rules for trapping, handling, relocating, or dispatching nuisance wildlife are specific, and young animals make the job more complicated.

Use Humane Pressure to Encourage the Skunk to Leave

Repellents and harassment methods should be treated as temporary pressure, not permanent control. They can help convince a skunk that a den is no longer comfortable, but they do not replace exclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use mild, targeted methods. Place a bright work light near the entrance, aimed toward the den area but not creating a fire hazard or shining into a neighbor’s windows. A radio set at normal talking volume near the area can add disturbance. Vinegar-soaked rags can be placed near the den opening, but not deep inside it. The goal is to make the space less comfortable while still allowing the animal to leave.

Give the process a few nights. Many skunks will relocate when light, sound, odor pressure, and food removal happen together. After the animal leaves, confirm vacancy before closing the opening.

Avoid mothballs. They are EPA-regulated pesticides, and using them outdoors or off-label as animal repellents is illegal and can harm people, pets, soil, water, and wildlife. Avoid using poison as well. Poisoning wildlife is unsafe, often illegal, and can create secondary hazards for pets and scavengers.

Close the Entry Point With Real Exclusion, Not Foam or Loose Lattice

This is the part many generic skunk-control tips miss. Skunks are strong diggers. If the repair only covers the visible hole, they can dig at the edge and re-enter. Good exclusion blocks the face and the digging path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth, welded wire, or purpose-made animal-proof skirting. For most residential deck, shed, and porch work, 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth is a practical choice. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners, exterior-rated screws, washers, masonry anchors where needed, and stakes or landscape staples for the apron.

Build an L-Shaped Apron

The most reliable approach is an L-footer, sometimes called an apron. Fasten the vertical section to the structure, then bend the mesh outward along the ground so it forms an L shape. The vertical section should cover the open face, and the horizontal apron should extend at least 12 inches outward from the structure. In loose soil or repeated digging areas, 18 to 24 inches is better.

Bury the apron 2 to 4 inches under soil or mulch, or pin it tightly to grade with heavy landscape staples and cover it. The skunk tries to dig at the wall line, hits the mesh, and gives up because the barrier continues outward under the soil. Do not leave sharp wire ends exposed where children, pets, or landscapers can be cut.

Epic 02120 All Natural Skunk Repellent Grandular - 5.5-lbs

  • The smell and taste of the granules provides dual action protection to convince skunks that your yard is dangerous and quickly trains them to avoid the treated areas.
  • Convenient 5.5 lb shaker jug contains enough product to for all season use.

For sheds, fasten mesh to the bottom framing or skids if accessible. For decks, attach to rim joists, posts, or a pressure-treated nailer board. For masonry, use tap-in anchors or masonry screws with washers. For lattice, do not rely on the lattice itself as the animal barrier. Install the mesh behind it, then reinstall or replace the lattice as the finished screen.

Do Not Block Crawlspace Ventilation or Access

For crawlspaces, be code-aware. Crawlspaces need proper ventilation or a compliant conditioned crawlspace design, and they need access. Do not solve a skunk opening by solidly blocking vents with plywood, foam, or scrap material. Use corrosion-resistant vent covers, hardware cloth, or manufactured crawlspace vent screens that preserve required airflow and service access.

If a crawlspace vent frame is rotted, bent, or loose, replace or rebuild the frame before installing mesh. A screen screwed into decayed trim is not animal-proofing. It is a delay.

Deal With Lawn Grubs, but Do Not Treat Grub Control as Instant Skunk Removal

Skunks dig lawns because grubs and insects are there. Reducing grubs can reduce digging pressure, but it is not an overnight eviction plan. If the skunk has found a den under a deck or shed, grub treatment alone will not close that shelter.

Use grub products according to the label and timing. Extension guidance generally puts preventive grub insecticides in the late May through early August window, when young grubs are most vulnerable. Treatments after early October are generally not recommended for active grub damage because mature grubs are harder to control and may be moving deeper into the soil.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watering instructions matter. Many grub products require irrigation after application to move the active ingredient into the root zone. Applying a product and skipping the label’s watering step can waste the treatment. Also check whether your lawn damage is actually from grubs. Pull back a square foot of turf in a damaged area and count larvae. If there are only 1 or 2 grubs per square foot, the lawn problem may be drought stress, disease, or another pest.

Healthy turf is less vulnerable to peeling and digging. Mow at the correct height for your grass type, avoid scalping, water deeply rather than lightly every day, and repair thin areas in the proper season for your region.

What Skunk Removal Costs in 2026

Skunk removal pricing varies because the word removal can mean several different jobs: inspection only, live trapping, one-way door installation, young removal, odor control, exclusion repairs, lawn treatment, or crawlspace cleanup. A simple single-skunk job is not the same project as a skunk under a finished deck with 60 linear feet of skirting to rebuild.

Item or service Typical 2026 US cost What changes the price
Professional skunk removal $236 to $702 nationally; many jobs land around $300 to $700 Number of animals, den location, trap checks, young present, emergency service, licensing rules
Typical single-skunk removal About $300 to $350 Easy access, no young, no major exclusion or odor cleanup
Complex or multiple-animal job Up to about $700 before major repairs Multiple animals, tight crawlspace, deck access, repeated visits
General wildlife control benchmark Average about $402; common range $198 to $635 Useful when local skunk-specific pricing is unavailable
One-time pest or exterminator visit $100 to $600 Skunk work often prices higher than ordinary insect service because of odor, trapping, and exclusion risk
DIY cage trap $50 to $150 for consumer traps; $150 to $350 for larger humane traps Legal limits, trap size, build quality, handling risk
Hardware cloth or welded wire About $20 to $60 per roll or panel Gauge, height, length, galvanizing, fasteners, stakes
Contractor-installed skirting or animal-proofing A few hundred dollars to $1,000+ Linear feet, trenching, crawlspace access, trim repair, lattice replacement
Odor cleanup supplies Often under $50 for minor exterior odor Professional deodorizing, insulation removal, or crawlspace cleanup can add hundreds

High-cost metro areas tend to price higher. Rural areas may have fewer providers and longer trip charges. Some states also have strict trap-check, dispatch, or relocation rules that affect labor and scheduling.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

A careful homeowner can handle some skunk prevention work. Removing food sources, cleaning fallen fruit, securing garbage, trimming brush, installing better trash lids, and repairing minor lattice gaps are reasonable DIY tasks. Installing a short section of hardware cloth around a shed can also be DIY if you can do it without trapping an animal inside.

DIY is appropriate when you have no evidence of an active den, the repair is accessible, there is no strong odor inside the home, and local rules allow the work you plan to do. Use gloves, eye protection, corrosion-resistant materials, and a conservative approach. Confirm vacancy first.

Hire a licensed wildlife professional when the skunk is under a house, crawlspace, deck, porch, slab, or finished structure; when there may be young; when there are multiple animals; when odor is entering the home; when the animal appears sick or injured; when you cannot confirm the den is empty; or when local law requires licensed trapping.

Also hire help when the exclusion work touches structural elements, crawlspace ventilation, foundation vents, or long deck perimeters. A professional animal-proofing repair is not just a piece of wire over a hole. It may involve vent replacement, trim repair, digging around posts, fitting mesh around stairs, and preserving drainage and airflow.

Safety, Rabies, and Legal Notes

Skunks are one of the terrestrial rabies reservoir groups in the United States. Most skunks you see at night are not rabid. But a skunk that is disoriented in daylight, unusually aggressive, paralyzed, circling, staggering, or approaching people or pets should be treated as a public health concern. Call local animal control or public health authorities. If a person or pet has a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure, seek medical or veterinary guidance immediately.

Before trapping or relocating a skunk, check your state wildlife agency and city or county animal control rules. In many states, relocation is restricted, permits may be required, trap checks must happen on a set schedule, and some nuisance wildlife cannot simply be released elsewhere. A $100 trap is not the same as legal removal.

Do not place traps where children, pets, or neighbors can interact with them. Do not attempt to handle a trapped skunk casually. Aside from spray risk, there are bite, disease, and legal risks.

If a Pet Gets Sprayed

Move the pet outdoors or to a ventilated area before washing. Do not bring a freshly sprayed dog through the house if you can avoid it. The odor will transfer to floors, walls, bedding, and HVAC returns.

Tomato juice mostly masks odor and can stain fur and surfaces. A common deodorizing mixture is hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a small amount of dish soap. Use it fresh, avoid the eyes, rinse thoroughly, and do not store it in a closed container because pressure can build. Check with your veterinarian if spray hit the eyes or mouth, if the pet was bitten, or if there is vomiting, drooling, eye irritation, or unusual behavior.

For exterior surfaces, wash hard materials with appropriate cleaners and ventilation. For crawlspaces, insulation, or enclosed areas, professional odor control may be needed. If a skunk sprayed under a structure, the odor can move through gaps, ducts, plumbing penetrations, and floor assemblies.

A Practical Skunk-Control Workflow

Here is the sequence we use as a construction-minded checklist.

First, identify the activity. Look for cone-shaped holes, tracks, odor, fresh soil, and repeated movement around a specific structure. Use a trail camera if the pattern is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Second, remove attractants for at least several nights. Secure garbage, pet food, birdseed, fruit, compost, poultry feed, and brush piles. If you skip this step, any exclusion work is under more pressure.

Third, test the suspected den. Observe at dusk, use a camera, or place loose newspaper or flour at the entrance for 2 or 3 nights. Do not seal an opening just because you found it.

Fourth, use humane pressure if the den is active and there are no suspected young. Add light, normal-volume sound, and vinegar rags near the opening. Where legal and appropriate, a professional may use a one-way door so the skunk can leave but not re-enter.

Fifth, seal only after vacancy is confirmed. Install 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth or welded wire, fastened securely to sound framing or masonry. Use an L-shaped apron extending 12 to 24 inches outward and buried or pinned under soil or mulch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sixth, repair the finish. Replace broken lattice, rotted trim, loose vent covers, damaged crawlspace screens, and gaps at stair stringers or deck posts. The finished work should look intentional, not temporary.

Seventh, address lawn conditions. Check for grubs, treat only at the correct time and according to the label, and repair thin turf. Good lawn care reduces food pressure, while exclusion prevents shelter.

Handled in that order, most skunk problems stop being recurring emergencies. The property gives the animal fewer reasons to visit and fewer places to settle in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What attracts skunks to a garden or lawn?

The big attractants are unsecured garbage, pet food, birdseed, compost with food scraps, fallen fruit, poultry feed, dense brush, and grub-heavy lawns. Skunks also look for quiet shelter under decks, sheds, porches, crawlspace vents, slab edges, and wood piles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does professional skunk removal cost in 2026?

Most 2026 US skunk removal jobs fall around $300 to $700. Simple single-skunk jobs may be about $300 to $350, while complex jobs with multiple animals, young, tight crawlspace access, odor, or exclusion repairs can run higher. Contractor-installed animal-proofing can add a few hundred dollars to $1,000 or more.

Can I legally trap and relocate a skunk myself?

Maybe, but do not assume so. Many states and municipalities restrict trapping, relocation, trap-check timing, and release locations. Before setting a trap, check your state wildlife agency and local animal control rules. In many cases, hiring a licensed wildlife professional is the safer and more compliant option.

How do I know if a skunk is living under my deck or shed?

Look for a musky odor, fresh soil at an opening, repeated digging along the edge, tracks, and nighttime activity. Watch from a distance at dusk, use a trail camera, or loosely place newspaper over the opening for 2 or 3 nights. If the newspaper is pushed aside, the den is likely active.

What is the best humane way to get a skunk to leave?

Remove food sources first, then use mild pressure such as bright light, normal-volume radio noise, and vinegar-soaked rags placed near the opening. After the skunk leaves, confirm the den is empty and seal the entry with galvanized hardware cloth or welded wire. If young may be present, call a professional instead of sealing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do mothballs, ammonia, or predator urine keep skunks away?

Repellents may provide short-term pressure, but they are not permanent control. Mothballs should not be used outdoors or off-label as animal repellents because they are regulated pesticides and can harm people, pets, and the environment. Physical exclusion and attractant removal are the reliable long-term fix.
