The most reliable way to get rid of cockroaches is an integrated pest-management plan—not a single spray. First confirm what you are seeing and map the activity. Then remove food, water, and hiding places; seal cracks and plumbing openings; use targeted bait where the label permits; and keep monitoring after sightings decline. Foggers and repeated broadcast spraying often create more exposure without solving the source.
For homeowners, landlords, and property managers, the building itself matters. Moisture, gaps around pipes, damaged door seals, cluttered utility spaces, and neighboring units can all sustain an infestation. The steps below address both the insects and the conditions that allow them to return.

1. Confirm that the insect is a cockroach
Before buying pesticide, establish what you are dealing with and where the activity is concentrated. Cockroach evidence can include:

Species identification affects the likely source. German cockroaches commonly establish indoor populations in kitchens and other warm areas. Larger American, Oriental, and smokybrown cockroaches are more often associated with drains, basements, sewers, crawl spaces, utility areas, or outdoor entry points—although species behavior can overlap.
If identification is uncertain, save a specimen or take a clear photograph and ask a cooperative extension service or licensed pest professional for help. Misidentification can lead to treating the wrong locations or expecting the wrong control method to work.
Use traps to locate the problem
Place glue boards or sticky traps for roaches tightly against walls and in corners, rather than in the middle of a room. Good locations include:
- Behind or beneath the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher
- Under sinks and near plumbing lines
- Inside cabinets and along cabinet edges
- Near floor-wall junctions and utility penetrations
- In basements, laundry rooms, garages, and other suspected harborages
Leave the traps in place for roughly one week. Record the date, location, and number of insects caught. This gives you a baseline and helps show whether activity is localized, distributed across rooms, or declining after treatment. A trap is primarily a monitoring tool; it is not a complete solution for an established infestation.
2. Remove food and water
Sanitation does not replace treatment, but it makes targeted treatment more effective by removing the resources cockroaches need to survive. Focus on routine changes that eliminate small, reliable food and moisture sources.
- Store dry goods, snacks, pet food, and pantry items in sealed containers rather than open bags or cardboard boxes.
- Wipe crumbs, grease, spills, and food residue from counters, floors, cabinet shelves, and appliance surfaces.
- Do not leave dirty dishes, standing water, or food scraps overnight.
- Empty garbage regularly and clean residue from the inside and outside of waste containers.
- Feed pets on a schedule when practical, and remove uneaten food and water overnight if the product label or a pest professional does not require otherwise.
- Repair leaking faucets, supply lines, refrigerator water lines, pipes, and drains.
- Investigate condensation beneath sinks, around air-conditioning equipment, behind refrigerators, and in utility spaces.
- Dry wet surfaces and correct recurring moisture rather than simply wiping them once.
Pay special attention to hidden moisture. A small plumbing leak inside a cabinet or wall can sustain cockroach activity even when visible surfaces appear clean.
3. Remove shelter and seal the building
Cockroaches hide in narrow, protected spaces during the day. Reducing those spaces and closing routes into the home is especially important in construction, renovation, and property-maintenance work.

Reduce hiding places
- Remove unnecessary cardboard, paper bags, and packaging from kitchens, garages, basements, and storage rooms.
- Keep stored materials off the floor where possible and away from walls so the area can be inspected.
- Reduce clutter around water heaters, furnaces, electrical equipment, and utility penetrations.
- Repair damaged cabinet backs, loose baseboards, and gaps behind appliances.
- Do not bring boxes, used appliances, or secondhand furniture indoors without inspecting them.
Seal likely entry routes
Inspect and seal cracks or openings around:
- Baseboards and wall-floor joints
- Cabinets and countertops
- Plumbing and electrical penetrations
- Pipe chases and utility conduits
- Doors, windows, and damaged screens
- Foundation openings, vents, and crawl-space access points
For appropriate dry, nonmoving joints, silicone caulk for cracks and gaps and a caulk gun can make routine exclusion work easier. Use a suitable sealant and prepare the surface according to its directions; caulk is not a substitute for repairing an active plumbing leak or a larger structural opening.
Install or repair a door sweep when light or air is visible beneath an exterior or utility-room door. Maintain window and vent screens where they are part of the building’s design. If drains are suspected, keep drain traps filled with water and use suitable drain covers when recommended for the building and drain type.
4. Use targeted bait instead of foggers or routine spraying
When sanitation and exclusion are underway, targeted bait is generally a more appropriate indoor pesticide strategy than treating every surface. Ready-to-use cockroach bait stations and labeled gel products can place insecticide near cockroach traffic while limiting unnecessary applications.
Choose a product only for the pest, location, surface, and application method stated on its label. In the United States, look for clear labeling and required registration information. Common active ingredients found in registered cockroach products include abamectin, fipronil, hydramethylnon, and others, but the active ingredient alone does not determine whether a product is appropriate. The label, formulation, species, site, and local availability all matter.
Where to place bait
Place bait stations or small gel spots near suspected harborages and travel routes, such as:
- Behind or under appliances
- Under sinks and near—but not on—plumbing voids
- Along cabinet edges and behind removable kick plates
- Near baseboards and inaccessible cracks and crevices
- Inside utility areas where the label permits indoor use
Gel bait may be useful where cockroaches are entering cracks and crevices, but it must be used exactly as directed. A product label may restrict gel to inaccessible areas, prohibit application to food-preparation surfaces, specify the amount and spacing of bait placements, and require removal of food or dishes from a treatment area.
Never apply loose bait where children or pets can reach it. Keep bait in its original container, follow all access restrictions, and do not transfer it into a food or drink container. If a label calls for a child-resistant station, use that type rather than placing exposed bait.
Do not spray repellent insecticide around gel bait
Many gel-bait labels warn against applying repellent sprays on or near the bait. Repellent residue can discourage cockroaches from feeding, undermining the treatment. Adding more pesticide is not a substitute for correcting placement, competing food sources, species identification, or resistance.
Baits often work gradually. If a properly placed product is not reducing activity, keep the sanitation and exclusion measures in place, reassess the trap map and bait locations, and ask a professional about a different active ingredient or formulation if the label permits it. Do not stack multiple pesticides indiscriminately.
Why foggers are usually a poor choice
Total-release foggers and routine broadcast aerosol spraying can spread pesticide beyond the actual harborage, leave residues on surfaces, and increase exposure without reaching cockroaches hidden in wall voids, cabinets, or appliances. People with asthma should be particularly cautious: sprays and foggers can trigger attacks. Targeted, label-compliant control is usually the lower-exposure approach.

5. Vacuum and clean safely
Vacuuming can physically remove live and dead cockroaches, droppings, shed skins, egg cases, and debris. It is a useful initial cleanup step, especially around appliance edges, cabinet voids, baseboards, and other accessible harborages.
A HEPA vacuum may be useful when reducing allergen-containing dust is also a concern, particularly in a household with someone who has asthma or a cockroach allergy. It does not eradicate an infestation, and filtration does not remove the need to empty or seal the vacuum contents promptly.

Seal disposable contents or place them in an appropriate outdoor waste container promptly so insects do not escape. Clean the vacuum components as directed. Do not treat the vacuum with pesticide unless the equipment and product label specifically permit it.
Vacuuming should supplement—not replace—moisture correction, food control, exclusion, monitoring, and targeted baiting.
6. Continue monitoring after sightings decline
The first few days without a visible cockroach do not prove that the infestation is gone. Keep traps in strategic locations, inspect bait placements, and maintain the conditions that made the treatment work.
Use the same trap locations and record counts at regular intervals so you can compare results. A useful follow-up review asks:

A practical cockroach-control kit
For a basic, task-based approach, homeowners and property teams may need:
- Cockroach bait stations or a registered gel bait suitable for the intended site
- Sticky traps for roaches for mapping and follow-up
- Silicone caulk for cracks and gaps and a caulk gun
- A door sweep where a door gap is confirmed
- Airtight food-storage containers for pantry goods and pet food
- A HEPA vacuum or another suitable vacuum for physical cleanup
Buy products for a specific task rather than assembling a collection of unrelated pesticides. A kit cannot compensate for a leak, a shared building source, or incorrect product placement.
Pesticide and allergy safety
Read the entire product label before opening or applying a pesticide. The label controls the legal and safe use of the product. Do not apply it to a pest, surface, site, amount, or method that the label does not allow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep pesticides in their original containers and away from children and pets.
- Remove food, dishes, toys, and pet bowls when the label requires it.
- Keep people and animals out of treated areas for the period specified on the label.
- Never place loose bait in an accessible location.
- Do not pour pesticide into another container, especially one used for food or drinks.
- Wash hands and follow ventilation and cleanup directions on the label.
Be cautious with products sold through online marketplaces. In the United States, an inexpensive imported product without clear directions, legal labeling, and registration information is not a safer shortcut. Regulators have taken enforcement action against illegal or unregistered products marketed as cockroach chalks and baits.
Cockroach allergens can also worsen respiratory symptoms in sensitized people. If someone in the home has asthma or a known cockroach allergy, reduce exposure to droppings and dust through careful cleaning, food and moisture control, and exclusion. Avoid sprays and foggers that may trigger asthma, and consider professional guidance for pesticide decisions.

- Cockroaches are numerous or visible during the day
- Activity continues despite sanitation, exclusion, monitoring, and correctly used bait
- Several rooms or floors are affected
- There are signs of activity in wall voids, shared utility spaces, basements, crawl spaces, or drains
- Children, older adults, pets, or people with asthma make pesticide exposure a particular concern
- You cannot safely identify the insect or locate the source
Ask for an IPM-based service, not simply repeated blanket spraying. A good plan should include inspection, species identification, monitoring, source reduction, exclusion, targeted products, written instructions, and follow-up. Professional treatment is not a guarantee that a building-wide source will disappear if neighboring units, plumbing spaces, or structural openings remain untreated.
Renters and multifamily buildings
Renters should notify the landlord or property manager promptly, preferably in writing. Include dates, rooms, photographs where possible, and trap locations and counts. Ask for coordinated inspection of adjacent units, shared plumbing and utility spaces, trash areas, basements, and other common sources.
In an apartment building, cleaning one unit may not solve the problem if cockroaches are moving through wall voids, pipe chases, shared utility areas, or adjoining units. Building maintenance may need to repair leaks, seal penetrations, improve door sweeps, reduce clutter, and coordinate treatment across affected areas. Follow local housing and landlord-tenant requirements, which vary by location.
What commonly causes control to fail?
| Problem | Why it happens | Better response |
|---|---|---|
| One sighting is treated with a single spray | The source, harborage, or entry route remains. | Map activity with traps and address food, water, shelter, and gaps. |
| Bait is placed beside crumbs or grease | Cockroaches have easier competing food sources. | Improve cleaning and place bait near traffic and harborages as the label permits. |
| Gel bait is sprayed with repellent insecticide | Repellent residue can interfere with bait acceptance. | Do not mix methods near bait unless the product directions specifically allow it. |
| Fogging is used to reach hidden insects | Fog may not penetrate the hiding place and can increase exposure. | Use targeted, label-compliant treatment and physical exclusion. |
| Only the visible apartment is treated | Insects may be entering from adjoining units or shared spaces. | Coordinate inspection and maintenance across the building. |
| Monitoring stops immediately | A remaining population or new entry is missed. | Keep traps and records in place after sightings decline. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can cockroaches come up through drains?
Some larger cockroach species may enter from drains, sewers, basements, crawl spaces, or other damp utility areas. Keep drain traps filled with water, use suitable drain covers when appropriate for the building, and investigate plumbing or sewer-related entry routes. Drains are not the only possible source, so use traps to identify where activity is actually concentrated.
Do cockroach bait stations eliminate an infestation by themselves?
Usually not. Bait works best as one part of an IPM program that also removes food and water, reduces shelter, seals entry routes, and includes follow-up monitoring. Keep bait inaccessible to children and pets and use it only according to its label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre foggers effective against roaches?
Foggers and routine broadcast sprays are generally a poor first choice because they may not reach cockroaches hidden in cracks, appliances, cabinets, and wall voids. They can also increase pesticide exposure; people with asthma should avoid sprays and foggers because they may trigger attacks.
How do I know whether the infestation is improving?
Use sticky traps in the same locations and record captures over time. Falling counts across the activity centers, together with fewer signs and no new areas of activity, are more meaningful than simply going several days without seeing a cockroach.
The Bottom Line
Start with evidence, not panic: identify the cockroach, map activity with traps, remove food and moisture, seal building gaps, and use labeled bait only where it can be placed safely. Keep monitoring after the sightings stop. If activity is widespread, recurring, or connected to a multifamily building, involve a licensed professional and coordinate the building repairs and treatment needed to address the source.
