For a hardened spot, choose a method for the material: freeze and peel removable fabric, transfer carpet glue to scrap cloth with a warm iron, or use the separate scraping method for stucco. Avoid rubbing glue into fibers, and test any removal method on an inconspicuous area first.
Start with the least invasive method
If the glue is only a loose strand, wait until it has cooled enough to handle, then lift it gently with your fingers. Do not rub it across fabric or carpet: that can push adhesive deeper into the fibers. A cooled surface strand may also be lifted carefully if the surface can tolerate gentle handling; do not assume scraping is safe on a delicate or finished surface.
For general glue removal, Loctite advises testing a method on an inconspicuous spot because materials can react differently. Its hot-glue guide also specifically cautions that rubbing alcohol can damage carpet and that delicate textiles need extra care. Loctite’s general surface-care guidance
Remove hot glue from a garment
Freeze a hardened spot, then peel
- Place the garment in a freezer for 30 minutes so the glue hardens.
- Gently peel the hardened glue away. Avoid pulling or scraping aggressively at the fabric.
- If the item is too large for the freezer, hold an ice bag against the glue instead, then try peeling once it has hardened.
Use rubbing alcohol only with care
Loctite also describes carefully applying rubbing alcohol around the edges of the glue and working inward. First test a small, hidden area, use only a small amount, and proceed gently; the method may not suit delicate textiles. Do not use this as a carpet-removal recommendation.

Lift hot glue from carpet with a cloth and warm iron
- Lay a piece of scrap cloth over the glue.
- Briefly touch the cloth with the tip of a warm iron, applying light pressure. Do not slide the iron back and forth; Loctite warns that this can spread the glue.
- Let the glue cool, then lift the cloth so the adhesive transfers into it.
- Repeat with a clean area of cloth if glue remains, allowing it to cool before lifting each time.
Do not rub the glue into the carpet. The guide warns that rubbing can push it deeper into the fibers, and it cautions that rubbing alcohol can damage carpet. Loctite’s carpet instructions

Remove hot glue from stucco
- Apply rubbing alcohol around the edges of the glue, as described in Loctite’s stucco-specific guidance.
- Scrape carefully to lift the glue.
- If it remains stubborn, use a blow dryer to soften its grip, then scrape again.
This is a method for stucco, not a universal recipe for other hard surfaces. Do not transfer it to painted, plastic, or finished surfaces without material-specific guidance; test first in an inconspicuous spot.
