To get rid of carpenter ants, first confirm the signs and locate their nest, then correct moisture problems, repair damaged wood, block entry routes and use only a targeted treatment permitted by its current label. Carpenter ants excavate wood for nests rather than eating it, so activity in damp or damaged structural wood deserves careful inspection.
1. Confirm that the insects may be carpenter ants
Carpenter ants excavate galleries in wood to create nesting space; they do not consume the wood like termites. Look for trails, winged adults, coarse sawdust-like material (frass) and damp or decayed wood. None of these clues alone proves there is a nest: frass may be displaced from elsewhere, and size is not a reliable identification method on its own.
Inspect the wood around any suspected activity rather than relying on a single insect or pile of debris. If you cannot confidently identify the ant, avoid choosing a pesticide based only on appearance or size.
2. Follow activity and inspect likely nest locations
Watch where ants travel and check both inside and outside the building. Pay particular attention to damp or damaged wood, entryways, areas around roof or plumbing leaks, and routes that could connect an outdoor nest to the house. EPA guidance notes that ants may be more active at night, so checking trails after dark can make them easier to follow.

- Look for trails leading toward wall, roof or plumbing areas.
- Check wood that has been exposed to leaks, poor drainage or inadequate ventilation.
- Inspect around the foundation and nearby scrap wood or debris.
A nest may not be visible from the room where ants appear. If activity points into a wall or other inaccessible structural area, do not assume that treating the visible trail will reach the nest.
3. Correct the moisture conditions
Repair plumbing or roof leaks and address ventilation or drainage problems that keep wood damp. Carpenter ants are associated with moist or damaged wood in EPA guidance; correcting those conditions helps remove the environment that can support nesting.

4. Repair or replace infested and damaged wood
Assess the affected wood before removing it, especially if it may be part of the building’s structure. EPA guidance advises removing and replacing infested wood when a nest is in structural wood, but the extent of damage should be evaluated carefully. Move scrap wood and debris away from the foundation so they are less likely to provide nearby nesting places.
5. Block entry routes and reduce attractants
Seal gaps that you have identified as entry points, and trim branches that touch or overhang the home. Manage food and other household attractants as part of general pest prevention. These measures reduce routes into the building; they do not substitute for locating a nest inside damaged wood.

6. Choose a targeted treatment—or call a professional
The right approach depends on whether the nest is located, whether it is indoors or outdoors, whether structural wood is involved, and whether treatment can be applied safely. Historical EPA applicator material discusses direct nest treatment and baits, but those sources are not current consumer product directions. Do not copy directions from an old manual or archived label.
When considering bait or pesticide
EPA consumer guidance places prevention first and advises keeping baits inaccessible to children and pets. Use a pesticide only when its current label permits use against the pest at the intended site, and follow the full label. The U.S. EPA’s archived 2004 pesticide label states, “It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” That is historical label language, not instructions for a product currently on sale.

When to contact a pest professional
Contact a licensed local pest professional if the nest appears to be inside structural wood, cannot be reached safely, or ant activity continues after repairs and exclusion. A professional can assess the nest location and the extent of wood damage before treatment is chosen.
