How to Get Rid of a Wasp Nest Safely

The safest response depends on where the nest is. Keep clear, leave an avoidable nest undisturbed, and call a licensed professional for hidden, high, underground, or hard-to-reach nests.

The easiest safe way to deal with a wasp nest is to keep your distance and match the response to its location. Leave an avoidable nest alone until seasonal activity ends; call a licensed pest-management professional for a large, high, hidden, underground, or hard-to-reach nest, or one near people or pets. Only consider treating an accessible, exposed nest yourself if the current pesticide label explicitly permits that pest and site and you can follow every direction.

First, identify the risk—not just the wasps

A visible paper nest under an eave, a yellowjacket nest in the ground, and wasps entering a wall cavity are different problems. A treatment suited to an exposed nest may not reach a hidden colony, and disturbing a nest can put people nearby at risk. Keep children and pets away, warn others to avoid the area, and do not swat at wasps or block an entrance. For nests near doors, paths, occupied spaces, or other regular activity, the safest option is to contact a licensed professional. Oregon State University Extension identifies professional help as the safest approach near people or pets; University of Maryland Extension also recommends it for hard-to-reach nests or when a homeowner is uncomfortable treating one.

Choose the response that fits the nest

Leave an avoidable nest undisturbed

If the nest is well away from people and pets and poses no unacceptable risk, leaving it alone can avoid pesticide use. Maryland Extension says activity may cease around the first autumn frost, but the timing depends on local climate and species. Do not block the entrance while you wait: yellowjackets may create another exit. For region-specific advice, consult your local extension service. Maryland Extension’s wasp guidance and University of Massachusetts Extension discuss seasonal activity.

Call a professional for difficult or high-risk nests

Choose a licensed pest-management professional for a nest that is large, elevated, concealed in a wall or building cavity, underground, difficult to access, or close to people or pets. A professional can assess the nest’s location and sting risk and determine whether access or building repair is needed. When comparing providers, ask about licensing, experience with that nest location, sting-risk controls, the treatment approach, and any repair work that may be required. The cited guidance supports these criteria, but does not establish provider rankings or typical prices.

Consider DIY treatment only for an accessible exposed nest

If you decide an exposed nest must be treated, use only a pesticide whose current label explicitly permits the target pest and exact application site. Read the full label before buying or applying it; directions, protective equipment, application distance, and permitted locations vary by product. The EPA’s pesticide safety guidance says to read and follow the label. A label for one product is not a substitute for the label on the product you use.

For example, an EPA-accepted label for a specific wasp, hornet, and yellowjacket product, accepted June 1, 2026, directs users to apply in early morning or late evening when activity is minimal, stand at a safe distance rather than directly underneath the nest, avoid runoff and drains, and wait at least 24 hours before removing the treated nest. Those directions apply to that product, not to every wasp spray. Check the current label for any product you consider; labels can change. Read the specific EPA-accepted product label.

After treatment: follow the label and confirm activity has stopped

Do not knock down a nest immediately after applying a product. Follow that product’s required wait before removal and check from a safe distance for continuing activity. The example EPA label above sets a minimum 24-hour wait for its treated nest; Maryland Extension notes that residual effects from some treatments may take several days to affect workers returning to a nest. These are product- and context-specific points, not a universal timeline. If wasps remain active, or the nest is concealed, avoid further disturbance and contact a professional.

What not to do around a nest

  • Do not swat at wasps, block the nest entrance, or approach to inspect a colony at close range.
  • Do not flood an underground nest or set a nest on fire; Maryland Extension warns against both methods.
  • Do not pour gasoline or kerosene into a nest. British Columbia’s government warns against these methods, which can also harm soil and surroundings.

Reduce the chance of attracting yellowjackets

  • Keep garbage containers tightly covered.
  • Clean up food and drink spills promptly.
  • Remove fallen fruit.
  • Use baited yellowjacket traps, if appropriate, to reduce foraging nuisance around picnic areas—not as a dependable way to eliminate a nest.

These measures can reduce food sources and nuisance activity; they do not guarantee that a nest will not form. Oregon State University Extension, British Columbia’s guidance, and the EPA offer prevention advice.

If you compare a spray or a pest-control service

For a pesticide

Compare the current label’s target pest and allowed site, application distance and timing, runoff and drain restrictions, protective equipment, and time before nest removal. “Wasp and hornet spray” describes a product category, not proof that a particular spray is suitable for your nest or location.

For a professional

Verify licensing and ask about experience with the nest’s location, sting-risk controls, the planned treatment, and whether building access or repair may be necessary. Get the scope of work and any costs directly from the provider; the cited sources do not establish standard prices.
