The safest way to transfer between terminals during construction is to verify the airport’s own route instructions immediately before departure and again after you arrive. Confirm your terminal numbers, the current shuttle stop or walkway, operating hours, whether the route is airside, and whether you will need security or passport control. Construction can replace a walkway with a bus, move a stop to another gate, close an elevator overnight, or force a landside trip through a public transit system. Follow temporary signs, ask airport staff when a marked route is unclear, and allow time for walking, waiting, riding, possible rescreening and border formalities.
Why a terminal transfer can change without warning
Airport construction is usually phased. A path that worked on your last visit may be closed while a bridge, corridor, elevator, escalator or curb area is rebuilt. The replacement may not resemble the normal route: an airside walkway can become a shuttle bus, a shuttle stop can move to another gate, or a connection between terminals can require leaving the secure zone.

Airport maps and generic connection times become unreliable when work changes access. The airport’s construction advisory, service page and interactive map are the controlling information for your travel date. Check your airline’s current terminal and drop-off instructions as well; Denver International Airport specifically tells passengers to match the drop-off side to their airline and confirm the correct door with the airline.

- Confirm both terminals. Look at the latest itinerary, your airline’s app or its manage-booking page. A codeshare can display a different operating carrier or terminal, so verify the airport and flight number you will actually use.
- Open the airport’s construction or advisories page. Search the airport’s official website for terms such as “terminal transfer,” “construction,” “service alerts” or “getting around.” Use the airport’s interactive map when one is available. Denver directs travelers to its interactive map and temporary signs during construction (Denver construction and wayfinding guidance).
- Identify the replacement mode and exact stop. Determine whether the route is a walkway, airside bus, public train, landside shuttle or replacement bus. Record the level, gate, door or curb where you must board. At Chicago O’Hare, for example, the former Terminal Transfer Bus stop at Gate B1 is closed and the current stop is Gate C18B (O’Hare Terminal Transfer Bus information).
- Check hours and eligibility. A route may operate only during part of the day, and a free service may be limited to connecting passengers with a same-day boarding pass. Note the first and last departure, intervals if published, and whether you can use the service with your ticket and baggage situation.
- Determine airside or landside status. An airside route keeps you inside the secure zone. A landside route means you must exit security, travel through a public area and possibly clear security again. For international itineraries, check whether passport control or another border checkpoint is part of the transfer.
- Save the instructions offline. Take a screenshot of the map, stop location and operating hours. Construction pages can update while you are traveling, and cellular service may be weak inside a terminal.
What to do after you arrive at the airport
- Read the temporary signs before following the familiar route. Look for signs naming your destination terminal, “transfer bus,” “inter-terminal shuttle,” “exit security” or “re-screening.” Do not assume that a closed corridor has an obvious detour.
- Check the information screens and gate announcements. Confirm that your departure terminal and gate have not changed. If the airport has an information desk, ask for the current construction detour rather than a generic terminal map.
- Walk to the stated level and landmark. Allow extra time for a relocated stop. At a large airport, reaching a bus stop at another concourse can take longer than the ride itself.
- Show your boarding pass if requested. Airside transfer buses may be restricted to passengers with a same-day departing flight. Keep your passport and boarding pass accessible.
- Recheck your connection after the transfer. Once in the destination terminal, verify the gate, security lane and any passport-control direction on the screens. Construction may also affect elevators, corridors or the route to your gate.
How to compare the airport’s alternative routes
If an airport lists several options, compare the complete journey rather than choosing the shortest quoted ride. The relevant questions are:
#1 Best Overall

| Factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Security status | Airside or landside; whether another screening checkpoint is required | A landside transfer adds an exit, public-area travel and a new security queue. |
| Mode | Walkway, replacement bus, airport train, rail service or courtesy shuttle | Each mode has different stops, capacity, accessibility and operating hours. |
| Boarding point | Terminal, level, gate, door, curb or platform | Construction often moves the stop even when the service name stays the same. |
| Operating window | First and last departure, interval and any overnight gap | A route that works for an afternoon connection may not operate for a late arrival. |
| Eligibility | Same-day boarding pass, airline or terminal restrictions, ticket requirements | Some airside buses are not open to every airport visitor. |
| Border formalities | Passport control, customs or transit checks on your itinerary | International and domestic connections can follow different paths. |
| Accessibility | Step-free route, lift availability, wheelchair assistance and boarding method | A temporary detour may not use the normal accessible path. |
| Total time | Walk to the stop, wait, ride, transfer, screening and walk to the gate | The published ride time is only one part of the connection. |
Will you have to go through security again?
There is no universal rule. The answer depends on the airport, the route and your itinerary. An airside bus can keep you within the secure area, while a landside bus or train normally requires you to clear security again before entering the departure concourse. International connections can also require passport control even when no second security screening is needed.
O’Hare example
O’Hare’s secure Terminal Transfer Bus connects the core terminals and Terminal 5 only from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is intended for connecting passengers with a same-day departing flight and boarding pass. Outside those hours, the airport says passengers transferring between the core terminals and Terminal 5 must leave security, use the Airport Transit System and be rescreened (official O’Hare transfer instructions). The same page says the Terminal 1 stop formerly at Gate B1 is temporarily closed because of construction and directs passengers to Gate C18B.
Munich example
Munich Airport warns that a transfer can involve security screening or passport control depending on the itinerary. Its transfer information describes a free bus between Terminals 1 and 2 and a separate underground shuttle train between Terminal 2 and its satellite. The airport lists an approximately five-to-seven-minute ride for the Terminal 1–2 bus and about one minute for the Terminal 2–satellite train; those are local ride times, not complete connection guarantees (Munich transfer information).

How much extra time should you allow?
No official source establishes a single construction-related allowance that works at every airport. Build your estimate from the actual route:
- time to leave your arrival gate and reach the temporary stop;
- the published or observed wait for the next bus or train;
- the ride and any walk between the stop and your departure concourse;
- security, passport control or customs if the route is landside or your itinerary requires it;
- time to find a changed elevator, escalator, door or corridor; and
- a contingency for a missed departure, a full bus or a route change.
Munich advises allowing sufficient transfer time, and Denver advises arriving early while construction is underway. Neither airport sets a universal number of additional minutes. For a short connection, ask the airline whether the itinerary is protected and what happens if a construction detour causes a misconnection; do not rely on a normal-day transfer estimate.
Accessibility when the normal path is closed
Temporary routes can change the distance, surface, lifts and boarding arrangements. Check the airport’s accessibility or assistance page for the exact detour, then tell staff what assistance you need as soon as you arrive. Ask whether a wheelchair lift, step-free shuttle boarding, accessible restroom or alternative elevator is operating on the temporary route.

Haneda states that shuttle staff assist wheelchair users without a prior reservation. Denver advises asking an airport ambassador or customer-service agent for help. These examples do not establish that every construction detour at every airport is accessible, so confirm the current arrangement for your terminals (Haneda travel-between-terminals information; Denver construction guidance).

Official airport examples: what the detours look like
Chicago O’Hare: a moved bus stop and a time-limited airside service
O’Hare illustrates why both the location and the hours matter. Construction temporarily closed the Terminal 1 transfer-bus stop at Gate B1; the airport directs travelers to Gate C18B. The airside bus serves connecting passengers between the core terminals and Terminal 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and requires a same-day departing flight and boarding pass. Outside that window, travelers must leave the secure area, take the Airport Transit System and clear security again. Verify these live details before travel because the stop, hours and rules can change (O’Hare official page).
Denver: a closed bridge and a different level
Denver reports that a south bridge between the east and west sides on Level 6 is temporarily closed. Level 5 is the alternative east-west connection. The airport tells passengers to use the terminal side that matches the airline for drop-off, follow signs, consult the interactive map and confirm the appropriate door with the airline. Elevator, escalator, door and corridor closures related to the work can change, particularly at night (Denver’s construction wayfinding page).

Haneda: several modes while a walkway is out of service
Haneda lists a free inter-terminal shuttle, rail options, an underground T1–T2 walkway and a transit ramp bus. Its page says the underground walkway between Terminals 1 and 2 is out of service because of construction, while travel between those terminals remains possible by other options. Published stops, departure spans and intervals are specific to the airport and should be checked again rather than copied from an old itinerary (Haneda official terminal-transfer page).
Munich: separate terminal and satellite connections
Munich describes a free Terminal 1–Terminal 2 shuttle bus and a separate underground shuttle train between Terminal 2 and its satellite. The bus ride is listed as approximately five to seven minutes and the satellite train ride as about one minute. Security or passport control may still apply according to the itinerary. The page also carried a dated October 12–16, 2026 rail-replacement notice for getting to the airport by rail; that notice concerns airport access, not a terminal-to-terminal transfer, and its dates have passed, so do not treat it as a standing terminal route (Munich official transfer page).
Los Angeles: courtesy buses and post-security walking
Los Angeles International Airport describes courtesy buses between terminals and pedestrian access between terminals after modernization work completed in 2023. Treat that as general connection information, not a guarantee that every corridor is open on your travel date. Check the airport for current local closures before relying on a walk or bus (LAX inter-terminal connections).

What to do when the posted route does not work
The stop is not where the map says
Do not board an unrelated shuttle. Show the stop name or screenshot to an airport employee, information desk or customer-service agent and ask for the current construction location. Stop names can remain on older signs after a gate or curb has moved.
The airside bus is closed
Ask whether an airport train or landside shuttle is the approved alternative. Confirm whether leaving security will trigger rescreening and whether you have enough time for the queue. At O’Hare, the documented after-hours alternative is the Airport Transit System followed by security screening.
You arrive after the last departure
Use the airport’s overnight instructions, not a daytime timetable. Ask staff whether a public-area shuttle, train, hotel bus or taxi connection is permitted and where it departs. If no route is available, contact the airline immediately about rebooking or overnight arrangements.
An elevator or accessible entrance is closed
Tell an ambassador or customer-service agent your terminal, gate and mobility needs. Request a step-free route before starting the detour; a long route with stairs may not be a workable substitute.
Your connection is international
Ask specifically where passport control, customs and security occur. A route that is physically short can still require a queue at a border checkpoint, and transferring from an international arrival may involve different rules from transferring between domestic flights.
A practical checklist for the day of travel
- Terminal numbers and operating airline confirmed.
