For a small, isolated pothole, clear away water and loose debris, prepare the edges back to sound pavement, place cold-mix asphalt patch, and compact it according to the product label. Cracks need a treatment suited to their type and condition; crack filler is not a cure for widespread cracking or a failing base. Deep, extensive, or recurring damage may need professional assessment rather than another surface patch.

Choose a repair based on the damage

A pothole is not always just a shallow gap in the top layer. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) describes potholes as localized pavement breakups that can involve the base beneath the asphalt. A visible hole may therefore signal weakened material below the surface.

Condition Likely approach Important limitation
Small, isolated pothole Cold-mix asphalt patch, with the area cleaned, prepared, filled, and compacted Often a temporary repair; a hole that returns may have a deeper cause. FHWA pothole repair guidance
Crack suited to localized treatment Crack filler or sealant selected for the crack and conditions Filling and sealing methods differ; follow the product instructions and avoid overfilling. FHWA crack-treatment guidance index; Asphalt Institute FAQ
Aging, dry or brittle surface, small surface cracks or voids, or raveling Consider seal coating as a separate surface-maintenance treatment Seal coat does not repair a pothole or replace reconstruction. Asphalt Institute FAQ
Deep, extensive, or repeatedly failing damage Have an asphalt contractor assess the pavement and whether reconstruction is needed The right repair depends on site-specific conditions. FHWA pothole repair guidance

How to patch a small asphalt pothole

For a localized hole that appears suitable for a surface patch, the general sequence is to remove water and loose material, prepare sound edges, place cold mix, and compact it. FHWA describes this as a semi-permanent patching procedure, but also cautions that pothole patches are temporary in many situations. Use the instructions for the cold-mix product you select; driveway scale does not make every agency repair detail necessary or practical.

  1. Check the hole. If it is deep, large, near widespread cracking, or has returned after earlier repairs, get a professional assessment instead of treating it as a simple surface defect.
  2. Clear water and debris. Remove loose asphalt and debris from the hole. The patch material needs a prepared area rather than a layer of dirt or loose fragments.
  3. Prepare the edges to sound pavement. FHWA’s semi-permanent method calls for straightened edges that reach sound pavement. Agency guidance lists saws and powered equipment for this work; do not assume those tools are required for every small home repair. If sound edges cannot be reached with an appropriate, safe approach, consult a contractor.
  4. Place cold-mix asphalt patch. Use a product intended for asphalt patching and follow its current label for placement and any conditions or preparation it specifies.
  5. Compact the patch. Compaction is part of FHWA’s procedure. A hand tamper can be a scale-appropriate homeowner tool for some small patches, but the cited FHWA guidance does not specifically endorse it for residential use. Follow the material instructions and do not assume that simply pouring mix into a hole is enough.

How to treat a crack in an asphalt driveway

First determine whether the crack is localized or part of a larger pattern of interconnected cracking or pavement failure. FHWA provides separate guidance for crack sealing and crack filling, and the Asphalt Institute describes a crack-sealing approach that uses routing and modified joint sealer, with sealant left below the pavement surface rather than overfilled. Those details are not a universal do-it-yourself recipe: the appropriate treatment depends on crack condition, movement, climate, and the product instructions.

  • Choose a crack filler or sealant labeled for the type of crack and the conditions where it will be used.
  • Follow the product’s preparation and application directions, including any stated limits on weather or surface conditions.
  • Avoid overfilling; excess sealant can sit above the pavement rather than within the intended crack treatment.
  • Do not expect crack filler to correct widespread interconnected cracking or a failing base. Those conditions call for assessment of the pavement, not simply more sealant.

When is a patch likely to be temporary?

FHWA notes that pothole patching is temporary in many cases and that full-depth reconstruction is necessary for a permanent repair in most instances. That distinction matters at home: if a patched area opens again, or the damage is deep or spreading, the visible hole may be only the surface symptom. Repeated patching without addressing the underlying pavement can leave the cause in place. A qualified asphalt contractor can assess whether localized patching remains suitable or whether more extensive work is needed.

A historical FHWA summary of a study of more than 1,250 cold-mix patches at eight test sites in the United States and Canada reported that 56 percent remained in service through the final performance monitoring round in 1995. The agency summary said throw-and-roll performed as effectively as the semi-permanent procedure in most situations in that experiment and was more cost-effective. These were road-agency test sites, not a forecast for a residential driveway, a current retail product, or a warranty of patch life. FHWA summary of the cold-mix patch study.

Seal coating is maintenance, not pothole repair

The Asphalt Institute says a well-designed and constructed low-traffic pavement, such as a driveway or parking lot, should not need sealing for approximately two to five years; the timing depends on climate severity and original construction quality. It describes seal coating as a way to renew old asphalt that has become dry and brittle, seal small surface cracks and voids, and inhibit raveling. It is a surface treatment, not a substitute for patching a pothole or rebuilding failed pavement. Asphalt Institute FAQ.
