How to Fix a TV That Keeps Blinking On and Off: Quick Troubleshooting Tips

Separate full restarts from picture flicker and blinking indicator lights, then follow safe tests for power, remotes, HDMI devices, settings, heat and software.

First, identify what is actually blinking. A TV that repeatedly shuts down and restarts needs different troubleshooting from a picture that flickers, a standby light that flashes, or an HDMI device that briefly interrupts the image.

For a TV that is fully restarting, the safest first test is to unplug it, disconnect every external device, wait at least 60 seconds, then connect the TV directly to a known-working wall outlet and turn it on with the physical power button.

Start with the symptom

What you see Most likely area
The entire TV turns off and boots again Power, software, overheating, remote commands, HDMI-CEC or internal hardware
The picture flickers but sound, menus or apps remain active HDMI cable, source device, input, picture settings, backlight or display hardware
The standby light blinks but the TV never starts Model-specific startup or hardware fault; the blink pattern is not universal
The TV is stable until one HDMI device is used That device, cable, input or HDMI control handshake

Do not assume that a blinking LED means a bad power board. The meaning of an indicator depends on the brand, exact model, number of flashes and rhythm.

The fastest safe fix for a TV that keeps restarting

  1. Turn the TV off if it responds.
  2. Unplug it from the wall.
  3. Disconnect everything connected to it: HDMI devices, soundbars, receivers, game consoles, cable boxes, streaming sticks, USB drives and antennas.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds. Sony specifies different intervals in different guidance, so one to two minutes is reasonable if a shorter reset does not help.
  5. While the TV is unplugged, hold its physical power button for about 15 seconds, if the model has one.
  6. Plug only the TV directly into a known-working wall outlet. Do not use a power strip, extension cord, smart plug or surge protector for this diagnostic test.
  7. Turn it on with the TV’s physical power button, not the remote.
  8. Leave it running for several minutes before reconnecting equipment.

This procedure is supported in manufacturer troubleshooting guidance from TCL, Sony, LG and Samsung.

Check the outlet, cord and power path

  1. Plug a lamp or another known-working device into the same outlet.
  2. Make sure a wall switch does not control the outlet.
  3. Confirm that the TV cord is fully seated at the wall and at the TV if it is detachable.
  4. Look for cuts, crushed sections, exposed wire, loose connections or heat damage.
  5. Test the TV directly from the wall, bypassing a surge protector, power strip, extension cord, smart plug or energy-saving outlet.

A direct-wall test is for diagnosis; it does not mean you should permanently abandon appropriate surge protection. If the existing protector is implicated, replace it with a reputable, properly rated unit. Samsung recommends bypassing a surge protector during troubleshooting, while LG notes that some energy-saving recessed outlets may not provide continuous power.

Remove the remote as a possible cause

A stuck or damaged power button can send repeated commands. Remove the remote’s batteries, then operate the TV with its physical button. Also move other remotes away temporarily and check for a stuck, contaminated or damaged button.

If the TV stays stable with the batteries removed, install fresh batteries and test again. The remote may need replacement or, on some smart TVs, model-specific Bluetooth re-pairing. If the TV still restarts without the remote batteries, the remote is unlikely to be the cause. Samsung and TCL both recommend testing with the physical button.

Reconnect HDMI devices one at a time

If the TV works by itself, reconnect devices individually. Wait and test after each connection. The device or cable connected immediately before the restarting returns is the leading suspect.

Possible causes include a streaming stick, console, cable box, receiver, soundbar or ARC/eARC handshake. Try another HDMI cable and input, and update or restart the suspect device.

Test HDMI-CEC

HDMI-CEC allows connected equipment to control TV power and inputs. Brand names include:

Brand CEC name
Samsung Anynet+
LG Simplink
Sony Bravia Sync or HDMI-CEC terminology
TCL, Roku, Google TV and Fire TV CEC or device-control labels vary by platform

Disconnect all HDMI equipment, test the TV, then reconnect one device at a time. As a test, disable CEC on the suspect device or TV. On many Samsung models, the setting is under Settings > General > External Device Manager > Anynet+, although labels and paths vary by model and software. Disabling CEC may stop unwanted power commands, but it also removes convenient automatic control.

Check timers, power-saving and network settings

Use the TV’s settings search or model-specific manual to check:

  • Sleep timer
  • On/off timer
  • Auto power-off
  • No-signal power-off
  • Eco or energy-saving modes
  • Power On with Mobile or similar network wake controls
  • Smart-home routines
  • HDMI-CEC and automatic device power
  • Schedules on a cable box or game console

A sleep timer usually shuts the TV down predictably after a set period. A loop that repeats every few seconds is more suggestive of power, software, HDMI-control or hardware trouble. Samsung identifies Anynet+ and compatible mobile wake features as possible unwanted power sources.

If the screen flickers but the TV stays on

Treat picture flicker separately from full power cycling.

  1. Press the TV’s Home or Menu button. Does the menu flicker too?
  2. Disconnect all HDMI devices and open a built-in app or other internal source.
  3. Run the TV’s built-in picture test, if available.
  4. Try another input and source device.
  5. Reseat the HDMI cable or substitute a suitable, known-good cable.

If the built-in picture test and internal apps are stable but one HDMI source flickers, the TV is less likely to be at fault. Suspect the source device, cable, input or HDMI handshake. Samsung’s picture and HDMI troubleshooting recommends these types of tests.

If the standby light blinks but the TV will not start

Record the brand and model, the number of flashes in each cycle, whether the screen briefly lights, whether sound is present, and whether the TV clicks, buzzes or attempts to boot. Then repeat the test with all external devices disconnected.

There is no universal blink-code chart. Do not diagnose a failed power board from a number of flashes alone. Consult the exact model manual or the manufacturer’s support page. Sony and TCL both note that indicator behavior varies by model.

Check ventilation and heat

If the TV shuts down only after it has warmed up, inspect the installation:

  • Keep vents uncovered.
  • Move the set away from enclosed shelving and heat sources.
  • With the TV unplugged, remove dust from exterior vents.
  • Leave the clearance specified in the model’s manual.
  • Notice whether better ventilation changes the timing of the shutdown.

LG lists improper ventilation as a possible cause of intermittent power behavior. Persistent heat-related shutdown can also indicate a failing internal component and should not be treated as solved merely because the TV works briefly after cooling.

Update software only if the TV is stable

Firmware may help with some software problems, but update only if the TV stays on reliably long enough to complete the process. Use the model-specific official support page, record the current version if possible, and do not unplug the TV during an update. If it repeatedly shuts off during updating, stop retrying indefinitely and contact the manufacturer.

Factory-reset as a last software step

A reset can remove corrupted settings, but it will not repair overheating, a damaged cord, a failing power supply or other physical hardware. It also erases Wi-Fi credentials, app logins, picture and sound preferences, channel lists, paired devices, accessibility settings and personalized options.

Paths vary by platform. Examples include:

  • TCL Google TV: Settings > System > About > Factory reset
  • TCL Roku TV: Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Factory reset everything
  • Some Sony TVs: Settings > System > About > Reset > Factory data reset

Use the instructions for your exact model and software version rather than assuming these paths are universal.

Use this decision guide

Result What it suggests Next step
Works with the physical button but not the remote Remote batteries, stuck button, pairing or sensor issue Replace batteries, remove obstructions and test another approved remote
Works alone but fails when equipment is reconnected CEC conflict, bad cable, external device or ARC/eARC handshake Reconnect one at a time, then disable CEC or replace the suspect cable
Stable at the wall but not on a power strip Failed, switched, overloaded or smart power accessory Replace the accessory after confirming the diagnosis
Shuts down after warming up Ventilation, heat buildup or internal fault Improve ventilation; seek service if it continues
Restarts with no devices connected Software, firmware, main board, power supply or another internal fault Attempt an appropriate update or reset only if stable; otherwise arrange service
No light, sound or screen response Outlet, cord, adapter or internal power fault Verify the outlet and cord, then contact support

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop using the TV immediately if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning odor, liquid intrusion, extreme heat, unusual electrical noise or a damaged power cord. Unplug it if safe to do so. Do not open the chassis or attempt board-level repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If restarting continues after direct-wall testing, a full power reset, remote isolation and removal of all external devices, the problem is likely beyond low-risk home troubleshooting. Have the model number, serial number, purchase date, warranty status and recorded blink pattern ready for the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my TV turn on and off every few seconds?

Disconnect all HDMI and USB devices, remove the remote batteries, power-cycle the TV, and test it directly from a wall outlet with its physical button. If it still loops, arrange service.

Can a remote make a TV turn on by itself?

Yes. A stuck or damaged power button, failing batteries or another infrared-control device can send unwanted commands. Remove the batteries and test the TV’s physical button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a factory reset fix a blinking TV?

Only if corrupted settings or software are responsible. It cannot repair a failing power supply, overheating, damaged cable or other physical fault, and it erases personalized settings.

Is a blinking standby light always a power-board failure?

No. Blink meanings vary by brand and model. Record the exact pattern and consult the model-specific manual or manufacturer support.
