A flashing snowflake can be a normal compressor-protection delay: the thermostat is calling for cooling but briefly prevents the air conditioner from restarting too soon. For Honeywell thermostats covered by its guidance, wait up to five minutes. If cooling still does not start, check the thermostat’s mode and setpoint, then basic HVAC power. The meaning is model-specific, so consult the manual for your exact thermostat.
Why is the snowflake blinking?
On some thermostats, a flashing snowflake—or a message such as “WAIT” or “WAITING FOR EQUIPMENT”—indicates a compressor delay. The pause helps prevent the compressor from restarting too soon after it stops. Honeywell says its delay can last up to five minutes under normal conditions; that is manufacturer guidance for its products, not a universal timer for every thermostat. Honeywell Home’s support guidance, updated September 2, 2025, explains the delay.
The icon does not have one meaning across all systems. For example, a GE Appliances RV thermostat uses a flashing snowflake in COOL mode to indicate that the indoor coil is near freezing and the compressor has been turned off. The GE Appliances RV thermostat manual recommends increasing airflow in that situation. This RV-specific behavior should not be assumed to apply to a home thermostat.
What to check, in order
-
Identify the thermostat and message
Find the make and model, and note whether the display shows a flashing snowflake, “WAIT,” “WAITING FOR EQUIPMENT,” or “COOL ON.” Check the manual for that exact model; the same symbol can mean different things on different systems.

Wait through the stated delay
If your thermostat indicates an equipment delay, wait for the interval in its manual before changing settings or trying to restart the system. Honeywell’s guidance allows up to five minutes, and the Honeywell X2P manual says to wait five minutes when “WAITING FOR EQUIPMENT” appears. If the system is covered by different manufacturer instructions, follow those instead. Honeywell Home support · Honeywell X2P manual
-
Confirm the thermostat is calling for cooling
Set the mode to Cool and check that the target temperature is below the room temperature. The Honeywell X2P manual advises checking mode, setpoint, and room temperature when there is no cooling call or equipment-wait message. Labels and controls vary by model.

Check basic HVAC power
If the delay has passed and cooling has not started, check the circuit breaker and confirm the HVAC power switch is on. If your system has a furnace door interlock, make sure the door is closed securely. These are checks listed in the Honeywell X2P manual; use your own equipment manual for system-specific instructions.

For a GE Appliances RV thermostat, address airflow
If you have the RV thermostat described in the GE manual and the flashing snowflake appears in COOL mode, the manual identifies it as freeze protection: the indoor coil is near freezing and the compressor has stopped. Clean the filter and open vents to increase airflow, as the manual recommends.

When to call an HVAC professional
If a Honeywell thermostat remains in a delay longer than five minutes, Honeywell says a voltage issue may be involved and recommends having a professional contractor verify that voltage is within an acceptable range and check for shorted wires. A persistent delay alone does not prove that the thermostat or compressor has failed. Avoid guessing at wiring; arrange a qualified diagnosis if the basic checks do not resolve the problem or cooling does not resume. Honeywell Home support
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the model manual matters
The most reliable interpretation comes from the instructions for the thermostat and HVAC system you actually have. Honeywell’s five-minute compressor delay and the GE Appliances RV freeze-protection signal describe different products and situations. Use the matching manual before treating a flashing snowflake as a fault or attempting a repair.
