1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Festool track saw that wanders or leaves a rough edge usually has a correctable problem: a dull or damaged blade, contamination or excess play between the saw and guide rail, a sole plate that rocks, changing cutting depth, excessive feed pressure, or a blade and splinter-guard setup that does not suit the material. Unplug the saw or remove its battery, identify the exact model, then work through the blade, rail fit, depth, technique, and workpiece-support checks below. Stop immediately if the blade no longer retracts or another safety mechanism fails.
Start safely and identify the exact saw
Disconnect a corded saw from the outlet. Remove the battery from a cordless version. Keep the trigger off while inspecting the blade, rail, sole plate, or splinter guard. A track saw can appear to have a simple alignment problem when the real issue is a damaged blade or a failed safety mechanism.

Read the model designation on the saw and use that model’s operating manual for every adjustment. Common designations include TS 55 REQ, TS 55 R, TS 55 F or FEBQ, and cordless TSC 55 versions. Controls, rail adjustments, and blade procedures can differ between generations. The detailed wavy-cut troubleshooting table in Festool’s TS 55 REQ supplemental manual applies specifically to that model family; do not transfer its settings blindly to another generation.
Festool’s current TS 55 FEBQ-Plus product information lists a 160 mm blade and up to 55 mm cutting depth. Treat those as specifications for that listed model, not as universal specifications for every TS 55 or TSC 55.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Checks to make first | Likely corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Cut line waves or drifts from the rail | Guide-rail gib cams or adjustable jaws, sole-plate rocking, sideways play, blade damage, changing depth, feed pressure | Clean the interface, adjust the exact model’s rail-fit controls in small increments, replace or resharpen a damaged blade, and make a controlled test cut |
| Ragged or chipped edge | Blade sharpness and tooth pattern, blade direction, splinter guard position, material suitability, cutting depth | Use a sharp blade suited to the material, set a consistent depth, and replace a damaged or displaced splinter guard |
| Burn marks or a smoking cut | Dull or contaminated blade, wrong blade type, incorrect installation direction, feed and speed conditions | Clean or replace the blade, verify installation, and adjust feed and speed according to the model manual and material guidance |
| Saw feels loose on the rail | Dust or chips in the rail groove, excessive clearance at the saw-to-rail contact, loose or misadjusted jaws or gib cams | Clean both surfaces and adjust the designated rail-play controls until guidance is secure but travel remains free |
| Saw binds or is hard to push | Rail fit adjusted too tightly, blade pinched by the workpiece, dull blade, excessive depth, inadequate support | Back off the fit adjustment, support the work, inspect the blade, and reset depth before cutting again |
These symptoms can overlap. A rough edge does not prove that the rail is misaligned, and a wandering saw does not prove that the blade is dull. Change one variable at a time so a test cut tells you what actually fixed the problem.
1. Inspect and clean the blade
Look for damage, resin, and dull teeth
With power removed, examine every tooth and the plate around it. Look for chipped carbide, bent teeth, cracks, pitch or resin deposits, and buildup of wood fibers. A blade can look intact yet be dull enough to make you push harder, which increases the chance of deflection and a wandering cut.
Festool’s operating guidance treats increased pushing force or visibly deteriorated cut quality as reasons to change the blade. Remove the blade for cleaning only with the procedure specified for your model. Do not improvise a sharpening method or use a cleaner that the manual does not approve.
Choose the blade for the job
Confirm diameter, bore, kerf, tooth geometry, and material application before installing a replacement. A blade intended for a different material can leave a poor edge even when it is sharp. For the current TS 55 FEBQ-Plus listing, the specified diameter is 160 mm; verify the exact specification on your own model before buying.
Install the blade in the direction marked on the saw and blade. An incorrectly oriented blade can burn, cut poorly, and behave unpredictably. Tighten the fastener using the model’s prescribed method, then rotate the blade by hand with the tool still disconnected to confirm it runs clear.

- Festool directs dull but otherwise suitable blades to an authorized service center for resharpening. Local availability and turnaround vary.
- After any blade change, make a short test cut in scrap of the same material before returning to finished work.
2. Clean the guide rail and check saw-to-rail play
Remove debris before adjusting anything
Brush or vacuum chips and dust from the rail groove, the saw table, and every contact surface that rides on the rail. A single chip under the sole plate can make the saw rock; packed dust can also mimic excessive clearance. Check the rail for dents, a damaged edge, or contamination that could move the saw away from the intended line.
Check for rocking and sideways movement
Place the saw on the rail without powering it. Hold the rail securely and gently try to rock the saw side to side. Also move it along the rail through the area where the cut normally starts. Excessive movement indicates too much play; a saw that catches or requires force indicates a fit that is too tight or a damaged surface.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe TS 55 REQ operating instructions describe adjusting the play between the saw table and guide rail with two adjustable jaws. The supplemental troubleshooting manual also calls for properly adjusted guide-rail gib cams and says to make sure the sole plate is not rocking on the guide rail. Use the controls and sequence shown for your exact generation, making only small changes and retesting after each one.
Adjust for secure guidance, not maximum tightness
- Disconnect power and place the saw on a clean, straight section of the rail.
- Identify the adjustable jaws or gib-cam controls shown in your model manual.
- Turn the adjustment slightly, then slide the saw the full working length of the rail by hand.
- Keep reducing play until the saw stays stable without binding, scraping, or needing excessive force.
- Repeat the rocking test and inspect that the sole plate sits flat.
A fit that is too loose permits the blade to move away from the guide line. A fit that is too tight can interrupt a steady feed, encourage you to force the saw, or damage the contact surfaces. There is no single adjustment position that applies to every rail, saw, or generation.
3. Verify sole-plate stability and rail condition
With the saw seated on the rail, look along the sole plate while applying light pressure at the front and rear. The plate should remain supported rather than teetering. If it rocks, inspect for packed debris, a bent plate, a damaged rail, or an adjustment that is uneven from one side to the other.

Run the saw over the section of rail used for the cut. If movement is smooth at one end and loose or tight at another, the rail may be damaged or distorted. A rail that is not straight, is dented at the edge, or is unsuitable for the saw cannot be corrected by forcing the fit tighter. Substitute a known-good compatible FS/2 guide rail for a controlled comparison when available.

4. Set cutting depth and keep it constant
Set the depth with the saw positioned as it will be during the cut, allowing only the amount of blade needed to pass through the workpiece. Then lock the setting according to the manual and verify it before starting. Raising or lowering the blade while moving through the cut changes the cutting geometry and is identified by Festool as a contributor to wavy cuts.
Depth also affects edge quality. A very shallow setting can increase chipping on the underside. Excessive blade exposure can worsen top-edge splintering in materials that are prone to it. Use a scrap test to find an appropriate setting for the material rather than assuming that maximum depth is best.
5. Change the cutting technique before changing parts
Use a controlled feed
Start the blade clear of the material, allow it to reach operating speed, and enter the work smoothly. Keep both hands in the positions specified by the manual and maintain even forward pressure. Festool notes that forcing an ATB-type blade too quickly can deflect it. That deflection can produce a wave even when the rail is correctly adjusted.
Do not correct a slow cut by leaning harder on the saw. If the tool needs unusual force, stop and inspect the blade, rail fit, depth, and workpiece support instead.

Support the workpiece and prevent kerf pinch
Support panels on a stable, flat surface with enough clearance for the blade below the cut. Arrange supports so the kerf does not close on the blade as the offcut drops or shifts. A pinched blade can pull the saw sideways, leave burn marks, or stop the cut abruptly. Secure narrow or unstable pieces so they cannot move as the rail is loaded.
Keep the rail from moving
Clamp or otherwise secure the guide rail when the panel, cut length, or surface makes movement possible. Align the rail to the intended cut line and confirm that the splinter guard is positioned over that line. A rail that shifts during the cut can create a perfectly straight cut in the wrong place.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Fix chipping, rough edges, and splintering
Confirm blade and material compatibility
Use a sharp blade with a tooth pattern intended for the material and the desired finish. Plywood, veneered panels, solid wood, and composites can require different blade choices. A blade that is appropriate for one may leave a ragged edge on another.
Inspect the splinter guard along the full cut
The splinter guard should be present, intact, and flush with the rail’s cut line. If it is torn, lifted, or no longer aligned, replace it with a compatible guard and establish its cut line according to the manual. A new splinter guard can improve edge support, but it will not correct wandering caused by rail play, a rocking sole plate, or blade deflection.

Use depth and feed as a matched pair
Make a test cut in scrap from the same panel. If the underside chips, check whether the blade is set too shallow and whether the blade is suitable for the material. If the top surface splinters, excessive depth, a dull blade, an unsuitable tooth pattern, or a damaged splinter guard may be involved. Change one setting, recut, and compare the result.

7. Diagnose burning separately
Burning is usually a heat and clearance problem rather than a simple rail-line problem. Inspect for a dull or resin-coated blade, the wrong blade type, incorrect installation direction, or a feed that is too slow for the material. Also check for a rail fit so tight that you are pushing against the saw rather than feeding it smoothly.
Festool’s troubleshooting guidance points to blade type, sharpness, installation, and speed or feed conditions when addressing burning. Follow the speed and material recommendations for your exact model; one universal speed or depth setting is not established for every TS 55 version or material.
8. Make a controlled test cut
- Choose scrap matching the thickness and material of the finished work.
- Secure the workpiece and rail so neither can move.
- Install a clean, suitable blade and set a consistent depth.
- Check that the saw slides freely without excessive side play or rocking.
- Start the saw clear of the material and feed at a steady rate without forcing it.
- Inspect both faces and the full length of the cut for drift, waves, chips, and burn marks.
- If the result is still poor, change only one factor—blade, rail adjustment, depth, or feed—and repeat.
A repeatable test separates a tool problem from a material or setup problem. If the saw cuts straight on a stable scrap setup but not on the job, revisit support, rail movement, and the workpiece’s tendency to pinch the kerf.

Repair and replacement choices
| Option | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Clean and adjust the existing saw and rail | The saw rocks, has excess play, or the interface is dirty | Use the exact model instructions and confirm that the saw still moves freely after adjustment |
| Replace the blade | The blade is damaged, dull, contaminated beyond safe cleaning, or cut quality has declined | Match model, diameter, bore, kerf, material, and cut type; the current TS 55 FEBQ-Plus listing specifies 160 mm |
| Professional sharpening | A dull blade remains otherwise suitable for the work | Festool directs dull blades to an authorized service center; availability differs by location |
| Replace the splinter guard | The guard is damaged, missing, or no longer flush with the cut line | Confirm compatibility with the rail and saw; this does not fix rail looseness or blade deflection |
| Authorized saw service | A safety or retraction fault, persistent unexplained drift, or suspected internal alignment problem | Stop using the tool for a safety-device fault and verify local service arrangements |
When to stop troubleshooting and obtain service
- Stop immediately if the automatic blade return or retraction no longer functions. Festool’s operating instructions say to discontinue use and have the saw repaired by an authorized service center.
- Do not open the motor or gear housing to pursue an alignment problem. Internal repairs require appropriate training, parts, and safety checks.
- Seek professional inspection when a correctly installed, suitable blade and a clean, properly adjusted rail still produce persistent drift.
- Stop if a guard, switch, brake, or other safety device does not operate as designed.
For a persistent alignment issue, the official material does not establish one universal field calibration procedure for every TS 55 generation. Record the model designation, blade specification, rail used, material, and test-cut result when contacting service; those details help the technician reproduce the fault.
Quick Recap
A practical maintenance routine
- Before each project, inspect teeth, plate, splinter guard, rail edge, and saw-to-rail contact surfaces.
- After cutting resinous or dusty material, clean buildup before it hardens.
- Store rails flat and protected from dents, and keep the saw from resting on a dirty sole plate.
- Whenever the blade is changed, verify direction, depth setting, and free rotation before powering up.
- Use a short scrap test after a blade, rail, or splinter-guard change instead of discovering a setup error on finished stock.
