Start with safety, not a reset trick. Inspect the battery for cracks, swelling, leakage, corrosion or unusual heat; if you see damage, stop using it, do not charge it and do not open it. For an undamaged pack, check the outlet, confirm the battery is seated in the correct manufacturer-approved charger, identify the exact charger light code in its manual, and allow for a hot-or-cold protection delay. If those checks do not restore charging, have the battery and charger tested by the manufacturer or an authorized service center rather than attempting an internal repair.
What a non-charging battery can mean
A cordless tool battery that appears dead does not automatically prove that the battery has failed. The fault may be at the wall outlet, charger, battery-to-charger connection, temperature protection system or battery pack itself. A charger that does not start can indicate either a failed battery or a charger/power problem, and the charger indicator by itself may not identify which component is at fault.

Use this order of checks:
- Inspect the pack and charger for safety problems.
- Verify the outlet and charger fit.
- Read the indicator for the exact charger model.
- Let a hot or cold pack return to the maker’s specified charging conditions.
- Use only manufacturer-permitted compatibility checks.
- Escalate persistent faults to authorized service or replace the diagnosed component.
Battery platforms are not interchangeable merely because a connector appears to fit. The replacement must match the tool’s manufacturer, voltage and battery system, and the charger must be approved for that platform.

Do not charge a visibly damaged pack
Remove the battery from the charger and tool if it has a crack, deformation, leaking material, corrosion, burn mark or unusual heat. Do not use, charge, open or attempt to repair it. DEWALT’s safety guidance specifically says not to use visibly damaged batteries and not to attempt battery repair. Put the pack aside where it cannot contact metal objects or be exposed to moisture, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for handling and disposal instructions.

Do not bypass the pack’s protection electronics
Do not bridge terminals, “jump-start” cells, connect an improvised power supply, dismantle the casing or bypass the charger’s protection circuitry. These actions can defeat the communication and safety controls between the tool, pack and charger. Manufacturer guidance warns that non-genuine or altered packs can create risks including bursting and fire damage. A pack that needs internal work belongs with a qualified service organization, not a workshop improvisation.
Separate a warm pack from a damaged pack
A battery can be warm after heavy drilling or cutting without being damaged. Leave it undisturbed in a dry, ventilated location and follow the temperature instructions in the battery and charger manuals. Heat accompanied by swelling, a chemical smell, smoke or visible deformation is a safety fault, not a normal charging delay.
Step-by-step checks for an undamaged battery
1. Test the electrical outlet
- Unplug the charger.
- Plug another appliance that you know works into the same outlet.
- If the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, turn that switch on and test again.
- Try a different known-good outlet if the first one has no power.
DEWALT’s operator guidance includes checking the outlet and notes that a switched outlet may be off. If the charger still shows no sign of life on a confirmed live outlet, the charger itself may need testing.
2. Confirm the charger belongs to the battery platform
Read the labels and model numbers on the battery and charger. Confirm that the charger is intended for that manufacturer’s battery family and voltage/platform. Never use a charger solely because its rails or connector seem to fit. A charger from another platform can be mechanically similar while lacking the correct charging profile and communication with the pack.
Check the charger’s power lead, plug and housing for cuts, melted areas, loose parts or other damage. Do not use a damaged charger; have it assessed through the manufacturer’s service route.

3. Reseat the battery
- Disconnect the charger from power before handling the pack if the manual instructs you to do so.
- Align the battery with the charger’s rails and contacts.
- Push it fully into place until the latch or retention mechanism engages.
- Reconnect power and watch the indicator described in the exact charger manual.
Remove loose dirt from the exterior with a dry cloth. Do not scrape contacts aggressively, apply liquid cleaner, insert metal tools or alter the terminals.
4. Identify the exact light pattern
Find the charger’s model number and use its owner’s manual, not a generic light-code chart. Indicator meanings vary by manufacturer and by charger model. Two published examples show why a code cannot be generalized:

A steady charging light, a completed-charge light, a no-light condition and a flashing fault can each have different meanings. Record the color, whether it is steady or flashing, and when the pattern starts. That information helps a service technician distinguish a power problem from a pack fault.
5. Allow a temperature-protection pause
Charging may be suspended when a pack is too hot after work or too cold after storage. Move it to a dry, ventilated place and wait until it reaches the charging conditions specified for that battery and charger. Do not accelerate the process with a heater, freezer, hot vehicle, direct sun or other forced-temperature method.
DEWALT documentation describes a hot/cold pack delay for the specific charger and battery families it covers. Its charging limits are product-specific and are not universal lithium-ion thresholds. A separate DEWALT support note for a particular “Nano Technology” pack family says the charger waits until the pack’s internal temperature falls below 60°C after a hot shutdown. Treat that 60°C figure as an example for that family, not as a general limit for every cordless tool battery.

After the wait, refit the pack and check the indicator once. Repeatedly removing and reinserting a pack will not override a temperature lockout.

A service procedure may isolate the failed part by checking a battery on a known-good charger or checking a known-good battery on the suspect charger. Do this only when the manufacturer’s manual for the exact platform allows it and the second charger or battery is confirmed compatible. Do not borrow a charger from a different battery system, even for a quick test.
Milwaukee troubleshooting material describes trying a pack on a known-good charger for certain fault patterns. That is platform-specific guidance, not permission to mix chargers. If you cannot establish compatibility from the manual or manufacturer support, stop at the external checks and arrange professional testing.
How to interpret common outcomes
The charger has no light at all
First rule out the outlet, a wall switch and a damaged power lead. Then verify that the charger is the correct model and that the battery is fully seated. If a confirmed live outlet and correct fit produce no indicator, the charger may be faulty; a service center should test both charger and battery rather than assuming the pack is dead.
The charger shows a fault immediately
Look up the exact code. On the Makita example, flashing red-green identifies a defective battery, while flashing red identifies a cooling or cold-temperature delay. The Milwaukee manual example uses flashing red/green for a damaged or faulty pack. A persistent fault after the pack has returned to the specified temperature is a reason to stop using it and contact authorized service.

The charger starts, then stops
This can occur during a hot/cold protection delay or when the charger detects a pack fault. Note when the interruption happens, allow the pack to reach the specified conditions and repeat the check once. If the same pattern returns, have the pack and charger tested. Do not leave a questionable battery unattended on charge.
The battery works in the tool but will not charge
That combination points attention toward the charger, the charger-to-pack contacts or a temperature/communication issue, but it does not identify a failed component by itself. Confirm platform compatibility, inspect for external damage and use only the diagnostic test authorized in the exact manual.
The battery will not power the tool and will not charge
A deeply discharged or failed pack is possible, but a charger fault or an active protection lockout can produce the same symptom. Do not attempt a jump-start or terminal bridge. Record the indicator behavior and send the battery and charger for manufacturer or authorized service testing.

Send it for service when checks do not resolve the fault
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair center when the battery remains unresponsive, a fault code persists, the charger refuses to light on a known-good outlet, or the result is unclear. Ask for the battery and charger to be evaluated together when possible; testing only one component can miss a compatibility or communication problem. Include the tool model, battery model, charger model, observed light pattern and whether the pack was hot or cold.
Service is also the correct path for a cracked, swollen, leaking or otherwise damaged pack. Do not put a damaged battery in a normal household waste stream or ship it without following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Replace only the diagnosed component
If testing identifies a failed battery, search for a compatible replacement battery for your exact tool platform. Before purchasing, verify:
- Manufacturer and battery-system name.
- Voltage and model compatibility listed by the tool maker.
- Compatibility with your exact tool model.
- Compatibility with your existing charger, if you intend to keep it.
- Manufacturer warranty, service and recycling support.
If testing identifies a failed charger, choose a manufacturer-approved charger for the same battery platform. A generic charger with a matching connector is not an equivalent substitute. The available evidence does not establish a universal replacement SKU, price or performance ranking, so those decisions require the exact tool and battery details.
Safe disposal and recycling
Follow the manufacturer’s disposal instructions and local rules. DEWALT directs users to a service center for safe battery disposal. Makita identifies its factory service centers or a local recycling facility and points United States users to Call2Recycle as a resource. Requirements vary by location, so confirm the current route before transporting a damaged or failed lithium-ion pack.
Keep the battery away from loose metal objects during storage or transport, and do not send a visibly damaged pack through a shipping service unless the manufacturer or carrier has given you the required instructions.
Preventing another charging failure
- Use the manufacturer-approved charger for the battery platform.
- Keep the charger and pack dry, clean and ventilated while charging.
- After demanding work, allow the pack to cool naturally before charging.
- Do not store or charge the battery in a vehicle exposed to extreme heat or cold.
- Inspect the casing and contacts before each charging session.
- Stop using a pack after a drop or impact if the casing, latch or terminals are damaged.
- Keep the owner’s manuals for the tool, battery and charger together so indicator codes and temperature instructions are available.
A quick decision path
- Damage visible? Stop. Do not charge, use or open the pack; arrange manufacturer service or disposal.
- No visible damage? Test the outlet and check for a switched socket.
- Correct charger? Confirm the exact platform, model and secure seating.
- What does the exact manual say? Match the color and flashing pattern to that charger only.
- Recently hot or stored cold? Allow the specified temperature-protection pause in a dry, ventilated location.
- Still faulty? Use a second compatible component only if the manufacturer permits the test; otherwise arrange service.
- Diagnosis complete? Replace only the failed, platform-compatible component and recycle the old pack through the approved route.
Questions to ask a service center
- Can you test the battery and charger as a pair?
- What exact fault code or measured failure did you find?
- Is the battery safe to return to service, or must it be recycled?
- Which replacement battery and charger models are approved for my tool?
- Does the repair or replacement carry a manufacturer warranty?
A clear record of the symptom and indicator pattern prevents a service visit from turning into guesswork. If the pack is damaged or the charger code remains unresolved, professional diagnosis is safer and usually more useful than another charging attempt.
