Start with the official 511 or traveler-information service operated by the agency responsible for the road. Use its construction-project page for planned work, then check the live map, incident list, cameras, alerts, or 511 phone line for current closures and detours. Confirm the route, direction, location, and time, check again shortly before leaving, and follow the detour signs in the field.
Use the road authority’s own information first
A closure notice is only as useful as its jurisdiction and freshness. A state department of transportation (DOT) normally maintains the most complete information for an interstate, U.S. route, or state highway. A county or city may be the correct authority for a local street. Begin by identifying who operates the road, then open that agency’s official 511 website or app. Where available, dial 511 from a phone.

State and regional systems commonly publish some combination of construction projects, lane restrictions, crashes, weather hazards, closures, detours, road conditions, cameras, and route alerts. Their coverage and update practices differ, so a feature offered in one state should not be assumed to exist in another. Examples of official systems include DriveNC.gov and the 511 services in Arizona, Louisiana, South Dakota, Ontario, and Southern California.
Search using the agency name plus 511, road conditions, or the route number. Avoid treating a search-engine result, social-media post, navigation-app estimate, or contractor announcement as the final authority when an official source is available. Those services can help you notice a problem, but the responsible road agency is the source to verify it.

Separate planned construction from live conditions
Construction information usually appears in two different places, and confusing them is a common reason drivers receive outdated advice.
Project pages explain what is scheduled
A construction or major-project page describes the work itself: project limits, anticipated phases, planned dates, maps, expected lane shifts, public-meeting information, and a project contact. South Dakota’s transportation agency, for example, directs travelers to regional project pages and a planned-construction map. Indiana’s transportation agency likewise separates project updates from its live traffic map.
These pages are the right place to learn whether work is expected during a future trip, but a published date is not proof that a closure is active at this moment. Weather, contractor sequencing, emergencies, and an early or late phase change can alter the effect on traffic.
Live traveler-information tools show current impacts
A live map or incident list is designed for a trip happening now or soon. Look for an entry that identifies the road, direction, exact location, event type, start time, expected end time if supplied, and any stated detour. Some systems let you turn on construction and closure layers separately from crashes and weather.
Indiana’s guidance is a useful example of the distinction: consult project resources for construction updates and the live traffic map for conditions along the roadway. Treat that as an Indiana workflow, not a national standard; other agencies organize their pages differently.
A step-by-step method before you leave
- Identify the controlling agency. Determine whether the road is an interstate, state highway, county route, city street, toll facility, or provincial highway. Start with that authority’s official site or 511 service.
- Check the project page for planned work. Search the route number, project name, county, or nearby interchange. Read the project limits and phase dates, not just the headline.
- Open the live map or incident list. Select the relevant route and zoom to the actual work area. Read the event description instead of relying only on a colored line or map pin.
- Set the direction and location. Verify northbound, southbound, eastbound, or westbound travel, and note the nearest intersection, mile marker, interchange, or town. A closure in the opposite direction may have a different effect.
- Check timing. Look for the event’s start time, last update, scheduled reopening, and any day-of-week or overnight restriction. If the agency does not state an update interval, do not infer one.
- Inspect supporting evidence. When available, compare the listing with agency traffic cameras, route-specific alerts, or a second official channel such as the 511 phone line.
- Save an alert or route. Arizona’s system, for example, describes saved routes, alternate-route information, cameras, and route alerts. South Dakota describes location-specific text and email notifications. Enrollment options and availability vary by jurisdiction.
- Recheck shortly before departure. A project schedule can remain accurate while the active closure changes. Make a final check close to leaving, especially for a long trip, a night drive, severe weather, or a work zone with changing phases.
- Plan for the signed route. Write down the official detour or identify the signed decision points before moving. Do not create a shortcut that ignores weight, height, turn, or local-access restrictions.
How to verify that a notice applies to your trip
Read every field that can distinguish one event from another. A reliable check includes:

- Event type: full closure, single-lane restriction, ramp closure, shoulder work, rolling operation, or an advisory.
- Timing: start time, latest update, planned duration, and whether the restriction is recurring.
- Detour description: the roads used, access limitations, and whether the route is signed.
- Source and freshness: the responsible agency and the timestamp or “last updated” label.
SoCal 511 describes filters for direction, start time, county, location, roadway, and description, and states that its traffic information is updated every minute for its Southern California service area. That one-minute statement applies to that service area only; it is not a general update rate for other 511 systems.
Choose the right official channel
Different channels answer different questions. Use the channel that matches the urgency and the information you need, and combine them when a closure would materially affect your trip.
| Channel | Best use | What to verify | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction or major-project page | Future work, project scope, phases, contacts, and planned dates | Project limits, phase, date range, and affected movements | May not reflect a last-minute closure or field change |
| Live 511 map | Current incidents, closures, lane restrictions, and detours | Route, direction, location, event type, and update time | Map symbols can be less precise than the written event entry |
| Incident list or route filter | Finding every event on a corridor or in a county | Filters and the full description for each result | Coverage and filter names differ by agency |
| Traffic cameras | Visual confirmation of queues, lanes, visibility, and work-zone setup | Camera location, viewing direction, and image time | A camera may not cover the closure itself or update continuously |
| Text or email alerts | Receiving changes after you subscribe to a route or location | Area selected, alert category, and message timestamp | Signup requirements and alert scope vary |
| 511 phone service | Checking conditions without browsing or when web access is inconvenient | Route, direction, and the operator’s stated timeframe | Menus, hours, and the information offered differ by jurisdiction |
| Agency customer service or project contact | Clarifying an ambiguous project, access question, or detour | Project name, route, exact location, and travel date | Not a substitute for checking the live system immediately before driving |
Using 511 websites, apps, and phone lines
Web and mobile maps
Open the map for the state or region, enable construction and closure layers, and search by route or location. If the system offers a route planner, save the exact corridor rather than a broad state-wide area. Read the event card for the written details and timestamp.
Phone access
Dial 511 where the service operates. Louisiana’s traveler-information system describes phone, web, app, email, and text channels for road work and closures. North Carolina says its 511 line carries urgent interstate-closure messages and directs overnight or emergency inquiries to DriveNC.gov. Phone menus may provide fewer details than a map, so record the route and direction you hear and verify them when possible.
Alerts and cameras
Alerts are useful for a trip that may change after you plan it. Select only the routes or counties you need so messages remain meaningful. Cameras can confirm whether traffic is stopped, whether lanes are visibly shifted, and whether conditions match the written notice, but a clear camera view does not prove that a ramp or downstream segment is open.

When the road is local or crosses jurisdictions
Not every street appears in a state 511 feed. A city public-works department, county highway department, metropolitan planning organization, toll-road authority, or bridge operator may control the segment. If the state map ends at a city boundary, look for the local authority’s official construction page or emergency-alert system.

For a route that crosses several states, repeat the check in each jurisdiction. A closure at the destination can be absent from the origin state’s map. Likewise, a detour that is valid for passenger cars may not accommodate a commercial vehicle, oversized load, school bus, trailer, or vehicle with a height or weight restriction.
How detours are selected
Detours are designed around the road being closed, the traffic expected to use it, and the physical limits of candidate roads. Agencies may consider capacity, intersections, bridge strength, vertical clearance, turning geometry, emergency access, transit, pedestrians, local residents, and the duration of the work.
Indiana’s construction FAQ explains that its projects may route detours to interstates, U.S. routes, or state roads because of traffic volume and vehicle size. That is Indiana’s stated policy, not a rule for every state. In another jurisdiction, the signed route may use a county road or a temporary local connection.

What to do when information conflicts or looks stale
The project page says open, but the live map shows a closure
Use the live closure for the immediate trip. A project page describes the planned phase; the live system is intended to report current impacts. Check the event timestamp and look for a camera or alert that confirms the condition.
The live map and a camera disagree
Check whether the camera is pointed at the correct carriageway and whether its image time is current. A camera may show a queue after a closure has been removed, or it may sit outside the restricted segment. Read the written event description and, if the decision is urgent, call 511 or the agency’s customer-service line.

No detour is listed
Look for signs of a ramp closure, lane restriction, or “local traffic only” instruction that changes the applicable route. Search the project page for a detour map and check nearby agency notices. Do not assume that the absence of a detour field means the road is open.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe route is missing from the state system
Confirm that you are using the correct state or regional service, then identify the road owner. For a city or county street, use that authority’s construction and emergency-information channels. A state system’s omission is not evidence that no work is occurring.
You lose data service while driving
Check the route before leaving and save the relevant alert or written detour information where your device permits. Once on the road, obey signs and do not handle the phone while moving. Pull over safely before making another inquiry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Information for commercial and special vehicles
Passenger-car directions are not automatically suitable for trucks, buses, recreational vehicles, trailers, or oversized loads. Before departure, check the agency’s restrictions for bridge weight, height, width, hazardous materials, and permitted routes. If the project contact does not state those limits, ask the road authority or permitting office for a vehicle-specific route. A detour that works for a sedan may require a longer approved route for a larger vehicle.
Why timely traveler information matters
The Federal Highway Administration’s report State of the Practice for Traveler Information During Nonrecurring Events (FHWA-HRT-17-014, April 2018) describes information at key decision points as a way to help operators and managers inform travelers about incidents that are not part of normal traffic. The practical implication is to seek the notice before a decision point—before entering a work zone, committing to a ramp, or reaching the last reasonable turnaround—rather than waiting until a barricade forces a maneuver.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a navigation app enough to verify a construction closure?
No. Use the navigation app as a routing aid, then verify the closure with the responsible road agency’s 511 service, live map, or phone line. Agency information is the appropriate authority for current construction restrictions.

How far in advance should I check a detour?
Check the project page when you begin planning, then check the live traveler-information system shortly before departure. Recheck during the trip when an alert, camera, weather event, or unexpected queue indicates that conditions may have changed.
What if my state does not have a 511 service for the road I need?
Find the authority that owns the segment, such as a city, county, toll facility, or provincial agency, and use its official construction or road-condition channel. State 511 coverage is not guaranteed for every local street.
Can I trust a published construction completion date?
Use it as a planning estimate, not proof that the road is open. A live map, incident listing, camera, or 511 phone update is better for the current condition because project phases and field conditions can change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the detour send me onto a road that seems indirect?
The agency may need to account for traffic capacity, bridge strength, vehicle size, clearance, turning space, emergency access, or local restrictions. Follow the signed route; an informal shortcut may be unsuitable or prohibited.
What details should I give an agency when asking about an unclear closure?
Provide the route number, travel direction, nearest interchange or cross street, planned travel date and time, vehicle type, and the wording or timestamp of the notice you saw. Those details let the project contact or customer-service staff identify the correct restriction.
