Treat the date as a planning estimate—not a guarantee—and use the current local forecast to decide whether plants need protection.
How to look up your local frost dates
- Search for local climatology. Search your city or county with “NWS frost freeze dates,” or visit the NWS forecast office serving your area. Many local offices publish station-based frost and freeze tables. For example, the National Weather Service Grand Forks frost and freeze page provides local station information.
- Check what the date measures. A table may show a 36°F frost proxy, a 32°F freeze, or a 28°F hard freeze. It may report a mean, median, or probability and may specify a climate-normal period. Those are different measures; do not treat them as interchangeable.
- Choose a station that resembles your garden. Compare its distance and elevation, and consider whether your yard is urban, rural, open, near water, or in a low spot. A nearby station can still differ from a garden where cold air settles.
- Use the forecast as frost approaches. Check the local NWS forecast and alerts for the expected low and duration of the cold. Climatology helps with planning; the forecast informs tonight’s decision.
NOAA’s 1991–2020 Climate Normals are the 30-year normal period referenced by the NWS source. The Grand Forks office’s Fargo Hector Field table, for example, gives averages for that station and period: May 19 for the last 36°F frost proxy, May 10 for the last 32°F freeze, and April 27 for the last hard freeze at 28°F or lower. These are Fargo values, not dates to apply across the United States. NWS Grand Forks frost and freeze climatology
What “frost date” means—and what it does not
Frost dates are climatological averages, not promised dates for a particular year. The NWS notes that cloud cover, wind, soil moisture, and the location of a temperature sensor can affect observed conditions. A station’s average is useful for planning, but it cannot tell you exactly when frost will occur in your yard. NWS Grand Forks
Frost also is not the same as an air temperature at or below 32°F. Frost forms when exposed surfaces cool below the dew point and water vapor deposits as ice. Under suitable conditions, frost may form when the air is around 33–36°F; dry air or stronger winds can make it less likely. A freeze threshold is a temperature measure, not a guarantee that frost will form on every surface. NWS Norman frost guidance

| Term or measure | What it indicates | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 36°F frost proxy | A threshold some NWS climatology tables use to estimate frost timing | It is a proxy, not proof that frost formed. Local sources may label or define thresholds differently. NWS Grand Forks |
| Freeze | In the Omaha-area NWS definitions, air temperature at or below 32°F | This is a local definition and does not by itself predict damage to every plant. NWS Omaha |
| Hard freeze | In the Omaha-area definitions, 28°F or lower for at least a few hours | Thresholds and operational wording can vary by NWS office; plant risk also depends on the plant and conditions. NWS Omaha |
Why your garden may differ from the station
Frost and cold-air pooling vary over short distances. A low area or valley may collect cold air, while an urban site, an open rural yard, or a garden near a large body of water may have different conditions from the reporting station. Topography, soil moisture, nearby water, vegetation, wind, and cloud cover all affect the local picture. Use station dates as context, and pay attention to the conditions at your own site. How to protect plants when frost or a freeze is forecast
Start with plants most exposed to the cold: tender plants and containers that can be moved. Follow the forecast’s expected minimum and duration; a brief, mild frost and a prolonged hard freeze do not pose the same risk.

- Optimize Performance: Deploy the covers before sunset to harness residual warmth from the soil. Once morning temperatures rise above freezing, remove the covers to permit sunlight warming. Wet covers should be dried before reuse
- Move containers. Bring vulnerable potted plants indoors or place them under cover.
- Cover plants. Use lightweight fabric over plants and secure it so it stays in place. NWS guidance names lightweight fabric as a possible measure but does not establish a temperature rating or guarantee that a particular cover will prevent damage.
- Water the soil beforehand. NWS guidance notes that moist soil retains heat better than dry soil. Apply this as a protective measure, not a promise of protection.
- Check the forecast again. Use the local forecast and alerts for the cold event rather than relying on the average frost date.
These steps are supported as general options in NWS Boulder garden frost guidance and NWS Binghamton gardening guidance. The sources do not compare cover products or establish performance for a particular plant or temperature.

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map helps assess whether perennial plants are likely to survive winter in a location. It answers a different question from when the last spring frost or first fall frost is likely. Use frost-and-freeze climatology for seasonal timing and the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map for perennial winter-survival guidance.
