Before you leave, check your state department of transportation (DOT) or 511 traveler-information service for the official picture of closures, lane restrictions, detours, and scheduled work. Then use a navigation app for turn-by-turn routing, and verify any major or confusing diversion against the DOT notice, map, or roadside signs. This two-source routine is more dependable than relying on a single app.
A reliable pre-commute routine
Road conditions can change between the time you plan a trip and the time you reach the on-ramp. Build your check around the route itself, not only the destination. The following sequence works for a regular commute, an unfamiliar trip, and a route that crosses state lines.

1. Open the official state or regional traffic source
Start with the Federal Highway Administration’s National Traffic and Road Closure Information directory. Choose the state where your trip begins and open its DOT or 511 service. These services differ in map layers, alert tools, project detail, and geographic coverage, so a cross-border commute may require two state services or a regional service.
2. Search the entire route
Enter or trace the roads you will actually use. On the official map, turn on every relevant layer offered:
#1 Best Overall

- Current construction and lane closures
- Full road closures and emergency incidents
- Detour or travel-advisory messages
- Traffic cameras
- Electronic message signs
Do not stop when the destination appears clear. A closure several miles before it, at a bridge, interchange, or connecting arterial can invalidate the whole trip. Bay Area 511, for example, provides separate construction-alert and road-closure filters on its Map & Alerts page. Caltrans groups QuickMap, 511, highway conditions, lane-closure searches, and live cameras on its Travel page.
3. Separate active disruption from planned work
A project page may describe work scheduled for next week, while the live map shows what is affecting traffic now. Read the date and time on every notice. Services such as 511NY’s map label future construction and construction closures separately. A future project can still matter to a recurring commute: it may change your departure time, parking access, or preferred route even when no closure is active today.
4. Turn on route or area alerts
If the service supports accounts, save your commute and subscribe to the available email, text, or app notifications. North Carolina’s DOT describes customized route and area email or text notifications for account holders. Arizona’s service explains how AZ 511 mobile apps let users save frequently used routes and receive alerts. Check the roads included in the saved route and the delivery method; an alert for a nearby highway may not cover a local street you use to reach it.
5. Cross-check a detour
Use a commercial navigation service such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze to see current travel conditions and receive turn-by-turn guidance. Treat its closure and detour information as a second signal, not automatic authority. Agencies may provide data feeds to these services, and some services add driver reports. NCDOT says its DriveNC alerts will continue feeding Waze, Apple Maps, and Google Maps. 511NY describes a Waze partnership that adds Waze reports to official New York DOT information.
For a major closure, compare the app’s proposed route with the DOT project notice and the detour shown on official signs. The Washington State DOT traffic manual warns that a vendor may not apply a proposed correction and can continue displaying an incorrect detour. If the two sources disagree, follow the agency’s signed detour and contact information rather than taking an unverified shortcut.

6. Check again shortly before departure
Emergency incidents, weather-related restrictions, and work windows can change quickly. Make a final check when you are ready to leave, especially after an overnight storm or before a long trip. Keep the dated project notice open when timing or local access matters; keep the live map open for current incidents and traffic. A website outage is also possible. In a September 25, 2026 update, the Wisconsin DOT reported that some project websites were temporarily offline while its traveler map remained available, so check the map and any alternate channel the agency lists.
Finding the right official source
Use the FHWA directory as your starting point
The FHWA directory is useful when you do not know the name of your state’s traffic service. It points to state-level road and closure information rather than ranking services. Open the state link, then look for labels such as “511,” “traveler information,” “traffic,” “road conditions,” or “construction.” Bookmark the map and its alert-registration page separately if they are different.

Account for regional and state boundaries
A state service may focus on roads within that state, while your commute uses a neighboring state’s bridge, tunnel, or expressway. Check both jurisdictions before leaving. Regional services can add another view: Bay Area 511, for example, presents construction and closure filters across its covered metropolitan area. The existence of a regional map does not guarantee that every local road or private facility is included, so confirm the coverage description on the service itself.
Keep phone and web options available
Many 511 programs offer a website, mobile app, phone line, or text and email notifications. Use the channel that works safely before driving. Florida DOT lists its traveler-information app on the Florida Mobile App | FL511 page. If a map does not load, try the agency’s app or phone service rather than assuming that no closure exists.
How to read a traffic map without missing the important detail
Look for the road segment, not just the icon
Open the incident or construction marker and read its description. The useful details are the affected direction, milepoint or cross street, lane count, closure limits, expected end time, and detour instructions. A “construction” symbol may represent a shoulder project with little delay or a full overnight closure; only the notice can tell you which.

Check cameras and message signs
When cameras are available, inspect the approaches on both sides of a reported problem. A camera can show queues that have formed before the closure marker appears. Electronic message-sign layers can reveal a restriction announced to drivers but not yet obvious from a color-coded map. Caltrans specifically lists live cameras and lane-closure searches among its travel tools.
Read the timestamp and status
Record whether the notice is current, scheduled, recurring, or completed. “Starts Friday” is not the same as “closed now.” A project may publish a broad date range while the daily work window changes. Use the live incident layer for the immediate departure decision and the project page for planned timing, access rules, and the agency contact.
Current closures versus planned construction
Emergency and same-day incidents
Crashes, flooding, fires, debris, and sudden infrastructure failures can create a closure with no advance project page. The live 511 map and agency incident feed are the first checks. Because these events evolve, make the final check as close to departure as practical and allow time for a signed detour rather than assuming your navigation app has already incorporated it.
Scheduled lane or road closures
Scheduled work often appears in a construction calendar, project page, or weekly update before it is visible as an active incident. Read the work dates, daily hours, affected direction, number of open lanes, and access restrictions. Ontario’s Ontario 511 service illustrates how a jurisdiction can combine current traveler information with construction planning. Use the date in the notice to decide whether it applies to your morning, evening, or weekend trip.
Long-running projects
For a project that affects your commute for weeks or months, save the project page and subscribe to its updates if offered. A periodic update can explain stage changes, ramp access, temporary traffic patterns, and milestone dates that a single incident icon cannot. Keep checking the live map because a project’s normal pattern can be interrupted by a crash or an additional closure.

Setting alerts that match your commute
Route alerts
A route alert should follow the roads you use, not merely a city or county. Include the highway, interchange, bridge, and major local approach. Review the saved route after a permanent route change; an old alert can continue to generate notices for a road you no longer travel.
Area alerts
Area alerts are useful when your route varies or when construction near a job site can affect several alternatives. They can also create extra notifications. Start with a narrow area and expand it only if you routinely use the surrounding roads.
Delivery and timing
Confirm whether notifications arrive by email, text message, push alert, or another channel, and whether you must be signed in. NCDOT’s description of customized email and text notifications and AZ 511’s saved-route feature show why the registration step matters. An alert is an aid to planning, not a guarantee that every incident will be delivered before you encounter it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using navigation apps safely and accurately
What apps add
Navigation apps can calculate alternate routes, estimate travel time, and combine agency feeds with user reports. They are especially useful after you have identified the official closure and need turn-by-turn directions around it. User reports can flag a blocked lane or queue that is not yet fully described in an agency notice.

Data can be delayed, incomplete, or misapplied to a map segment. The WSDOT traffic manual’s warning about vendors failing to apply corrections is a practical reason to verify a confusing diversion. An app may also route you onto a road that is technically open but unsuitable for the traffic volume or vehicle type. For a bridge closure, evacuation route, or detour with unusual restrictions, use the DOT notice and signs as the controlling information.

How to resolve a conflict
- Open the official incident or project notice and identify the exact closed segment.
- Check the agency’s signed detour, map annotation, or message-sign layer.
- Compare that route with the navigation app’s suggested alternative.
- Reject any app route that enters the closed segment, ignores a posted restriction, or conflicts with the official notice.
- Report a clear map error through the agency or app’s correction channel when one is provided, then follow the posted detour for the current trip.
What different services provide
The following examples show why you should compare features rather than assume every 511 service works the same way.
| Service | Geographic focus | Documented features | Alert or partnership detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| FHWA traffic directory | United States state-by-state links | Directory to state traffic and road-closure information | Used to locate the relevant DOT or 511 service |
| Bay Area 511 | San Francisco Bay Area region | Construction-alert and road-closure map filters | Regional map and alerts page |
| Caltrans Travel | California state highways | QuickMap, 511, highway conditions, lane-closure searches, and live cameras | Multiple official travel-information tools are listed together |
| 511NY | New York | Current and future construction and construction-closure information | Waze partnership adds Waze reports to official New York DOT information |
| NCDOT DriveNC information | North Carolina | Route and area traveler alerts; incident and construction information | Alerts continue feeding Waze, Apple Maps, and Google Maps; customized email and text notifications are available to account holders |
| AZ 511 mobile apps | Arizona | Saved frequently used routes and traveler information | Route alerts are available through the mobile-app service |
| FL511 mobile app | Florida | Official mobile traveler-information access | App availability is documented by Florida DOT |
These examples demonstrate feature variation, not a universal ranking. The available material does not establish a nationwide comparison of update speed or accuracy, so check the local service’s coverage and notification terms.
A commute checklist you can repeat
- Open the state DOT or 511 map from the FHWA directory or your saved official link.
- Trace the complete route, including the first local road and the final approach.
- Enable construction, closure, incident, camera, and message-sign layers when available.
- Open each relevant marker and read its direction, limits, schedule, and detour.
- Check future construction separately from incidents active today.
- Review route or area alerts and confirm that your saved roads and delivery method are correct.
- Compare any navigation-app detour with the official notice and posted signs.
- Check again immediately before departure when the closure is weather-related, emergency, or time-sensitive.
When information is missing or contradictory
The project page is unavailable
Try the live traveler map, mobile app, phone service, or the agency’s weekly construction update. Wisconsin DOT’s September 25, 2026 notice is a reminder that project websites and live maps may not fail at the same time. Use the channel that is operating and look for an alternate contact listed by the agency.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The map shows no closure, but traffic is stopped
Check cameras, message signs, and the incident list, then look at the navigation app for user reports. A newly developing event may not yet have a complete marker. Do not turn around or enter a shoulder simply because the map is blank; follow law-enforcement direction and roadway signs.
The detour sends you back toward the closure
Stop and verify the closed segment, direction, and interchange names against the DOT notice. Select the signed detour or another route that remains outside the closure. Report the mapping error after you are safely parked so the current trip is not dependent on an uncorrected vendor record.
Why official information matters at scale
NCDOT reported more than 34,000 traffic-impacting incidents in 2025, including crashes, scheduled maintenance, construction, and storm-related impacts. The department also reported nearly 1.4 million DriveNC.gov users and about 2.2 million website visits that year. Those figures describe North Carolina in 2025, not national usage or accuracy, but they illustrate how many different events a state traveler-information system must handle.
Kelly Wells, a traveler information engineer in NCDOT’s Traffic Systems Operations Unit, said in the department’s May 20, 2026 release about its planned DriveNC overhaul: “For more than 25 years, our current system has reliably served travelers across North Carolina,” NCDOT’s release states. The comment concerns North Carolina’s service history and should not be read as a nationwide performance claim.

Make the routine part of your commute planning
Save the official map, alert-registration page, and any recurring project page in one browser folder or phone screen. Check before leaving, not after you are already in the queue. Use navigation apps to execute a verified alternative, while the DOT or 511 service remains the reference for closure status, scheduled work, and official detours. This division of labor gives you current local context without treating any single map as infallible.
