Start with the official 511 traveler-information service or transportation department that owns the road. Search for the jurisdiction plus “511,” open the matching closure or construction record, and verify the road, direction, exact segment, status, dates, lane restrictions, and detour instructions. Check again immediately before departure; use navigation-app or community reports only as additional clues, not as a replacement for the responsible road agency.
Why the official source should be your first stop
A closure notice is useful only when it answers three questions: does it affect your route, where is the authorized or signed detour, and how current is the information? The road-owning agency or its designated 511 service is normally the best place to establish those facts because it receives reports from transportation staff, law-enforcement partners, contractors, or traffic-management systems.

There is no single service covering every road in the United States and Canada. Coverage is divided among state, provincial, regional, county, city, and sometimes turnpike or park authorities. For a U.S. trip, search the state name and “511”; for Ontario, use the provincial service. If a road is locally owned, the state map may not list every neighborhood street, so check the city or county transportation page as well.

Official does not mean infallible. A feed can omit a minor road, lag behind a rapidly changing incident, or show a project without explaining a vehicle restriction. Treat the agency record as the authoritative starting point, then read its details and confirm conditions at the road.

Use the alert record, not just the map symbol
Colored lines and icons help you find an area, but the underlying alert or project page contains the information needed to make a route decision. Open the record that matches your road and inspect each field that is available.
- Road and exact segment: Look for the route number, street name, interchange, mile marker, bridge, or nearest town. A symbol several miles away may represent a different work zone.
- Direction: Confirm northbound, southbound, eastbound, westbound, or both directions. A closure in one carriageway may leave the opposite direction open.
- Status: Determine whether the item is an active incident, current construction, a future project, a future construction closure, or a completed notice.
- Timing: Note the start date and time, expected reopening, recurring work window, and any target completion date. A target date is a planning estimate, not a guarantee that the road will reopen that day.
- Lane and vehicle conditions: Check whether all lanes, a shoulder, a ramp, a bridge, or a particular vehicle class is restricted. Weight, height, hazardous-material, and oversized-load rules may be different from passenger-car access.
- Detour: Read the described route and look for a detour layer or map line. The absence of a displayed detour does not prove that no signed route exists.
- Last update and source: Record the update time when shown and note whether the entry came from the department, highway patrol, a contractor, or a partner feed.
Indiana’s road-information system illustrates why opening the project record matters: its map can show current and future construction, while the CARS view includes speeds, accidents, closures, and detour routes when available. Project details may include updates and a target completion date. INDOT4U
A repeatable check before every trip
- Define the trip. Write down the road or route number, nearest town or interchange, direction of travel, and the date and approximate departure time. This prevents you from selecting a similarly named road or an alert for the opposite direction.
- Open the responsible authority’s service. Use the state or provincial transportation department’s 511 site. Examples include 511.org’s map and alerts, Caltrans travel information, Florida 511, and Ontario 511.
- Turn on relevant layers. Enable incident, construction, road-closure, and detour layers where the interface provides them. On 511.org, traffic, construction, road-closure, and critical-alert views are separate choices, so a default traffic layer may not show every project.
- Search or zoom to the segment. Use the route number, place name, or map search. Compare the alert’s location with your planned entry and exit points rather than relying on a broad county-level warning.
- Open the matching record. Read the full text and expand attachments, project notes, or “more details” links. Confirm direction, lane status, schedule, source, update time, and any stated detour.
- Check the next jurisdiction. If your route crosses a state, provincial, or regional boundary, repeat the process on the next authority’s service. A closure can begin immediately after the boundary even when the first map is clear.
- Look for a second signal. Check a navigation service or community incident feed for reports of a new queue, crash, or blocked side road. Use it to identify questions for the official source, not to override a signed detour or agency notice.
- Recheck close to departure. Construction schedules change, incidents clear, and weather can create new restrictions. Refresh the official map before leaving and save or note the alert details in case cellular service is weak.
- Recheck safely during a long trip. Stop at a safe location or use a hands-free voice service. Do not handle a phone while driving.
How to tell planned work from an active closure
Future construction
A future-project entry describes work that is planned but may not yet affect traffic. It can show a start date, anticipated completion, and broad work area. Do not treat it as a present blockage unless the record also identifies a current lane or road closure.

Some services separate a scheduled full closure from ordinary future construction. This distinction matters when you are travelling before the project starts: the road may be open now but unavailable during a stated overnight or weekend window.

Active closure or incident
An active closure means the restriction is in force according to the latest agency update. Read whether the closure applies to all lanes, one direction, a ramp, a bridge, or a limited vehicle category. An incident record can change repeatedly as responders clear the scene, so its timestamp is especially important.
Completed or expired notice
Older entries can remain visible in a project history or search result. Check the status and dates before routing around a restriction that may already be gone.
How current is the information?
Many 511 maps refresh automatically, but automatic refreshing does not make every item instantaneous. Planned work can be postponed, a contractor can change a lane window, and a local street may be managed outside the feed.
For a specific category of U.S. highways, federal regulation sets a service-timeliness standard: 23 CFR 511.309 states, “The timeliness for the availability of information about full construction activities that close or reopen roadways or lanes will be 20 minutes or less from the time of the closure for highways outside of Metropolitan Areas.” This is a scoped requirement for the availability of information about full construction activities on highways outside metropolitan areas. It is not a promise that every local street, incident type, or map entry is updated within 20 minutes, nor does it guarantee that an alert is error-free.

When an entry provides a last-updated time, compare it with your departure time. If the timestamp is old and the closure is important to your trip, look for a telephone service, agency announcement, or local authority contact rather than assuming the map is current.
What different services can and cannot tell you
| Source type | Authority and coverage | Useful detail | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| State or provincial 511 map | Designated traveler-information service for that jurisdiction’s participating roads | Incidents, construction, closures, cameras, travel times, and sometimes detour layers | May not cover every city, county, private, or neighboring-jurisdiction road |
| Transportation-department project page | Agency or project owner | Work description, phases, schedule, updates, contacts, and target completion date | May describe a project without showing live queues or a route-level detour |
| Highway-patrol or police incident feed | Public-safety agency reporting an active crash or hazard | Immediate incident location and response status when published | May not explain planned construction or the best long-term detour |
| Navigation app | Route-planning platform using a mixture of agency, sensor, and user data | Estimated delay, alternate routing, and turn-by-turn guidance | Can misclassify a closure or route traffic onto an unsuitable local road |
| Community report | Individual drivers or contributors | Early clues about a queue, debris, police activity, or a newly blocked entrance | Unverified, unevenly detailed, and not a substitute for the authority’s instruction |
Use the comparison axes that matter for your decision: who supplied the information, which network it covers, whether a timestamp distinguishes future from active work, how precisely it identifies direction and segment, and whether alerts are available by map, app, text, phone, or agency channel.
Examples of official services and what they offer
Bay Area, California
511.org’s FAQ explains that traffic incident data comes from the California Highway Patrol and that construction and event information can come from multiple sources, including Caltrans’ Lane Closure System. Its real-time service provides map and alert views for incidents, construction, and road closures. Traffic data on the map refreshes automatically. The service also offers telephone access and advises checking before departure or pulling over before checking a smartphone.

Indiana
INDOT’s road map and CARS tools combine project information with current traffic conditions. A project page can contain updates and a target completion date; the map can display detours when available. “When available” is important: inspect the notice and follow field signs even if no detour line appears online.
New York
511NY’s map combines information reported by the New York State Department of Transportation with Waze-reported incidents. The community feed can reveal additional context, but it remains supplemental. Confirm a major route change through the responsible transportation authority whenever practical.
Florida
Florida’s service describes an interactive statewide map and mobile app with travel times, alternate routes, crashes, construction, and closures. Use the map to identify the alert, then open its details to determine whether the restriction is current and which direction it affects. FL511 newsroom

When the map does not show a detour
A missing detour can have several explanations. The agency may expect drivers to follow temporary signs, the closure may affect only a ramp or vehicle class, the route may be managed by another authority, or the project record may not have a mapped detour. Do not invent a shortcut from a generic navigation result.
- Read the complete alert for phrases such as “follow posted detour,” “local access maintained,” “through traffic prohibited,” or vehicle-specific restrictions.
- Check the project owner’s page and the local city or county road authority.
- Zoom out and inspect adjacent roads for a separate detour or bridge restriction.
- Ask whether your trip can avoid the segment entirely by changing the origin, destination, or departure window.
- At the work zone, obey cones, variable-message signs, flaggers, and law-enforcement directions even if they differ from an older online route.
Handling conflicting or stale reports
Official map versus community report
Use the community report as a prompt to verify the official record. Compare the reported location and direction, look at the timestamp, and check whether the agency has posted a new incident. A single unverified post should not send you onto an unfamiliar road with unsuitable width, clearance, or weight limits.
Two official pages disagree
Prefer the entry with the newer timestamp and the authority responsible for that exact road segment. A statewide project page may describe the planned phase while a city page reports a short-term overnight closure. If neither page resolves the conflict, use the agency’s phone or traveler-information channel and allow extra time.

Look for a status change, publication date, camera view, or separate incident feed. If freshness cannot be established and the route is consequential, choose a route with clearer current information or contact the road authority rather than assuming the restriction is inactive.
Safety rules for checking updates
- Plan before moving; never read or type on a phone while driving.
- Use a voice service or pull completely off the roadway before checking an app.
- Do not stop on a shoulder unless an emergency or official instruction requires it.
- Expect a signed detour to change because of congestion, emergency access, weather, or a second closure.
- Leave extra time for a route that includes rural roads, bridges, low clearances, or seasonal restrictions.
- Keep the alert details, agency name, and update time available to passengers so the driver can concentrate.
A compact decision checklist
Before departure, you should be able to answer all of these questions:
- Which agency owns or manages the road?
- Does the alert identify my exact segment and direction?
- Is the restriction active, scheduled, recurring, or completed?
- What are the start time, expected reopening, and latest update?
- Does it affect every lane, a ramp, a bridge, or a vehicle category?
- Is a detour explicitly described or only posted in the field?
- Does my route cross another jurisdiction that needs a separate check?
- Have I refreshed the official information shortly before leaving?
If any answer is unknown, treat the route as uncertain: verify with the responsible authority, change the departure time, or select a path whose restrictions and detour are clearly documented.
