For a feature in a historic building, establish whether it should be repaired and retained before considering replacement; pause and get qualified help if structural damage or hazardous materials may be involved.
Where to find reclaimed vintage features
Start with architectural salvage yards, reclamation dealers and directories of specialist building-material suppliers. Historic England’s guidance on materials for historic building repairs points readers to specialist sources for traditional materials, including lime mortar, handmade bricks and clay roofing materials. It does not endorse a particular seller or confirm current stock.

Before making a trip or paying a deposit, ask the seller for the information that will let you assess fit and condition:
- Exact overall dimensions, thickness, orientation and, for a door or window, handing and opening direction.
- Frame or opening size, fixing points, clearances and whether the item has been altered.
- Close photographs of every face, joints, undersides, vulnerable edges and any repairs.
- A description of known defects and what components are included.
- Any available provenance or documentation about origin. Treat undocumented seller statements as claims, not proof.
These questions are practical screening advice rather than a seller questionnaire prescribed by an agency. They help avoid buying an attractive item that will not fit or whose repair needs are greater than expected.

Decide whether a candidate is a good fit
Compare the item with the opening, surface or system where it will be used. Historic England cautions that repair materials must suit the existing fabric: compatibility, physical properties, durability and future maintenance all matter. As the agency puts it, “Whatever material is chosen, it must be compatible with the existing fabric.” The right choice can require investigation and specialist knowledge, particularly in an older building.
- Fit: Check dimensions, orientation, opening direction, thickness, fixing pattern and clearance against the actual installation—not just a seller’s general description.
- Material: Consider whether its physical properties suit the existing construction and its intended use.
- Condition: Look for decay, cracks, missing parts, loose joints, corrosion, paint failure, staining and signs of earlier repairs.
- Repairability: Decide whether defects appear local and manageable or affect essential structure or function. Get expert advice if you cannot tell.
- Durability and upkeep: Consider the work needed to maintain the feature and whether that level of maintenance is practical for you.
- Completeness and provenance: Confirm what parts are included and what the seller can document about the item’s origin.
How to inspect reclaimed features
Timber doors and windows
Look closely at paint condition, exposed wood and signs of decay. Historic England’s maintenance checklist highlights bare timber at vulnerable places such as thresholds and sills, and at the lower or underside parts of sash windows. Check joints and attachment points as well. For a door, see whether it sits squarely and moves as intended; for a window, look for damage around the frame and sash. These checks can reveal visible problems, but they are not a full condition survey.

Timber flooring and decorative woodwork
Check boards and trim for soft or decayed areas, broken edges, missing sections, insect activity and signs of moisture. A digital moisture meter may provide an indicative reading, but a number alone does not establish structural soundness. The appropriate reading can depend on the timber and its finish, and a meter reading is not proof that decay is absent. Extensive damage or a feature that may be load-bearing warrants professional assessment.
Stone, brick, tile and metal
Look for cracks, deep erosion, missing material, crumbling, corrosion and failing joints. Historic England’s materials and maintenance guidance identifies defects such as cracks, deep erosion, missing pointing and crumbling masonry. The correct assessment and repair depend on the material and its intended use; ask a conservation or building professional when suitability is uncertain, particularly before fitting a feature into an older building.

Radiators, pipework and other building systems
Salvaged radiators and pipework need more than a visual check. Historic England advises surveying existing systems and recording the equipment, services, historic interest and building performance. Reconditioned heaters and older pipework should be appropriately pressure-tested, and cleaning should avoid acid-based methods. Leave this assessment and work to qualified specialists rather than treating it as a casual buyer inspection.
Repair, retain or replace?
If the feature is part of a historic or otherwise significant building, establish its significance and condition before deciding to remove it. The US National Park Service (NPS) Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties say intact or repairable historic materials should not be replaced. Its Rehabilitation Standards and Guidelines set out a general sequence: protection and maintenance first, repair when deterioration is present, and replacement only when deterioration is too extensive to repair. If limited replacement is needed, the NPS says replacement material should match the original in composition, design, color and texture.

These are US preservation guidelines, not rules for every location. In the UK or elsewhere, check the requirements that apply to the building and proposed work. Before removing or installing a feature in a listed, protected or otherwise significant building, check local consent and building-control requirements. A qualified professional can help assess significance, condition and the appropriate level of intervention during planning.
Safety issues that should stop a casual inspection
Older features may have lead-based paint or asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets or seals. Historic England advises commissioning a specialist asbestos survey before survey work where asbestos may be present. The NPS also identifies asbestos and lead paint as common rehabilitation hazards and says mitigation must follow applicable environmental codes while protecting occupants and minimizing harm to historic integrity. The rules vary by jurisdiction.

Do not scrape, sand, cut or disturb suspect paint or insulation based on a visual check. Use qualified local professionals and follow applicable rules. Arrange professional inspection if you find significant rot, movement, extensive cracking, suspect hazardous material, an uncertain structural role, or damage that cannot be assessed safely while the feature remains installed.
