The quickest reliable route is to check the roadworks or street-works register for the highway authority responsible for your road. Search by postcode, street or nearby area, include a future date range, and open each relevant result. Record the exact location, status, works owner, description and planned dates, then ask the named works owner or utility company whether your property is likely to lose access, experience disruption or have a service interrupted.
A register entry is a lead, not a property-specific guarantee. Dates can move, descriptions can be broad and urgent works may be reported only shortly before or after they start. Confirm the details directly and escalate unclear cases to the authority responsible for the road.

What to do first
- Identify the road authority. Start with your local council’s street-works register or map. The relevant authority is usually the highway authority for the road, which may be a county council, metropolitan council, London borough or another highways body.
- Search the address area. Use the property’s postcode, street name or a nearby landmark. If the service allows a date range, include the period in which you are concerned about access or utilities.
- Open every plausible result. A result on the same street may be recorded against a junction, road segment or nearby number rather than your exact address.
- Write down the key fields. Keep the works reference, exact location, status, works owner, description, planned start date and planned end date.
- Contact the named works owner. Ask specifically about your address, driveway or entrance, pedestrian access, deliveries and possible interruptions to water, gas, electricity, telephone or broadband services.
- Recheck before the work begins. Published dates and statuses are planned information and can change. Reconfirm arrangements if the work affects a move, building project, medical need, business opening or other time-critical activity.
Where to search in the UK
Your local highway authority’s register or map
Many councils publish a searchable street-works register, map or both. For example, Greenwich describes a search that can show the work type, utility company, location, planned dates and an impact category. Gloucestershire County Council links to a map covering planned roadworks by utilities, the council and contractors. The labels and search controls differ by authority, so look for terms such as street works, roadworks register, planned works or highways map on the council website.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the authority’s own register when possible. A map pin can be useful for orientation, but the detailed record is more useful for identifying the works owner and checking dates. If the council site offers both a map and a text search, use both when the first search produces no result.

London: Transport for London’s register
Transport for London’s London register accepts a postcode, street or borough and provides text or map results. Its search window can reach from two weeks in the past to three months in the future. That limit matters: a search that starts too far ahead may not show anything even when a project is planned later than the available window.
When reviewing an older event, remember that the register may now show work as completed. The result’s current status is more useful than an earlier screenshot or a neighbour’s previous search.
England’s underlying works system
In England, Street Manager is the system used by highway authorities, utility companies and their contractors to apply for permits, assess applications, record inspections and add reinstatement information. The Department for Transport says roadworks data entered by companies is available for public viewing, while Street Manager itself is for eligible organisations. A resident therefore normally uses the public roadworks data or a local authority register rather than trying to create a Street Manager account.
If you are outside England
The available tools and publication practices vary between UK nations and local authorities. Do not assume that an England-specific search window, permit process or notice period applies in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Start with the road authority for the address and ask whether it maintains a separate register, map or notification service.
How to search by postcode or street
- Set the area precisely. Enter the full postcode first. If the search returns no useful result, try the street name without the house number and then a nearby road or junction.
- Set a realistic date range. Include the weeks when you need access. If the register has a short maximum range, search again closer to the planned date.
- Switch between list and map views. List view often exposes the works reference, status and dates; map view helps you see whether the pin is at your frontage, on the opposite side of the road or several streets away.
- Open the detailed record. Do not rely on a coloured icon or abbreviated map label. The detail page is where the works owner, description and planned dates are normally shown.
- Check adjacent records. Separate permits can cover excavation, temporary traffic control, service connection and reinstatement. Nearby entries may therefore describe stages of one project or different works at the same junction.
- Save your notes. Record the search date and the information shown. A later status change is easier to understand when you can compare it with your earlier notes.
How to read a roadworks result
TfL’s register help identifies the fields residents should examine and notes that the information and icon are based on details supplied by the works owner. Use the following fields to decide what to ask next.

How to judge whether your home may be affected
Separate road impact from property impact
A permit on your street may affect through traffic but leave your driveway open. Conversely, a short excavation outside a property may make a driveway unusable or require a temporary service interruption. Treat these as separate questions:
- Can a vehicle reach the property throughout the stated period?
- Can residents, carers, visitors and delivery drivers reach the normal entrance on foot?
- Will a driveway, parking bay, dropped kerb, gate or access road be closed or narrowed?
- Will water, gas, electricity, telephone or broadband service be interrupted, isolated or moved?
- Will the work require an engineer to enter the property, garden, meter location or shared access?
- Are the published dates, working hours and traffic arrangements still current?
Use distance and the exact street segment
“On the same street” is not precise enough. Compare the works location with your entrance, side access, junction and any private road. Ask whether the crew will work outside the property, across the road, at a nearby junction or only farther along the street. A map pin should be treated as an approximate guide until the works owner confirms the limits.
Consider the work type and stated purpose
The description can indicate whether the work is likely to involve an underground service, a connection, maintenance, road resurfacing or reinstatement. It does not establish the actual method or interruption. Ask the works owner what will happen at the property boundary and whether another permit covers a later stage.
Check timing against your own needs
Compare the planned dates with removals, deliveries, trades, school transport, accessibility arrangements and any construction programme at the home. Ask whether the dates are a target, a permitted period or a confirmed appointment, and when the next update will be issued.
Questions to ask the works owner or utility company
Use the organisation named in the register and quote the works reference, address, postcode and planned dates. A focused enquiry is more likely to produce a useful answer than a general question about “roadworks.” Ask:

- Is the recorded work within the frontage, access, driveway or service route for this address?
- Will residents be able to enter and leave on foot and by vehicle at all times?
- If vehicle access is restricted, what alternative arrangement and notice will be provided?
- Will any water, gas, electricity, telephone or broadband service be isolated, interrupted or temporarily rerouted?
- What are the expected working dates and daily hours, and how will delays or early completion be communicated?
- Will the crew need access to a meter, garden, communal path, private road or other part of the property?
- Who should be contacted on the day if the agreed access arrangement is not in place?
Ask for the answer in writing when access or service availability matters. Keep the name of the person responding, the date, the works reference and any promised follow-up. If the register names a contractor rather than the utility owner, ask the contractor to confirm who has authority to make decisions about service interruption and property access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to do when no relevant work appears
Try the authority’s other publication route
A blank result does not prove that no work is planned. Try a street search, a nearby junction and the map view. Ask the local highway authority whether it keeps a separate register, map or schedule for its own works, contractors or projects. Local publication practices vary.
Ask the likely utility provider
If you are concerned about a particular water, gas, electricity or communications service, contact the provider using the details on your bill, account or service correspondence and describe the address and date range. Ask whether it has a planned-work notice that is not included in the public road register.
Report a missing or unclear listing
TfL says residents can report roadworks or events that are not listed on its register. For other areas, contact the authority responsible for the road and provide the location, observed activity, dates, signs or barriers and any works reference. The authority can explain whether the activity belongs in its register or direct you to the responsible organisation.
Why urgent works may have little advance notice
For England, Department for Transport guidance describes different advance-notice periods by work category:

| Category | Notice described in the guidance |
|---|---|
| Major works | Advance notice three months before, followed by a further notice ten days before. |
| Standard works | Ten days’ advance notice. |
| Minor works | Three days’ advance notice. |
| Immediate works | Notification within two hours of starting or by 10 a.m. the next working day. |
These are permit-notice requirements described for England, not a promise that every homeowner will receive personal notification. Immediate works may therefore appear only shortly before they begin or after activity has started. Even for planned work, the register’s dates are not a guarantee of the exact day or effect at one home.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning for access and service disruption
If vehicle access is important
- Tell the works owner about mobility needs, carers, business deliveries, construction deliveries or other time-critical access before the start date.
- Ask whether a temporary pedestrian route, escorted vehicle access or agreed delivery window is possible.
- Do not assume that a road closure automatically permits parking or loading elsewhere; ask who controls the temporary arrangement.
- Reconfirm the arrangement shortly before the planned start because the date or traffic layout may change.
If a utility interruption is possible
- Ask which service, premises and connection are affected and whether the interruption is planned or only a possibility.
- Request the expected start time, duration and restoration process.
- Ask whether essential equipment, alarms, heating, pumps or communications need preparation before the interruption.
- Use the utility provider’s emergency contact route if an unplanned outage occurs, rather than relying only on the roadworks register.
If you are carrying out building work
Coordinate your trades and deliveries with the confirmed access arrangement, not merely the register’s end date. Keep the works reference and the works owner’s contact details in the site file so a supervisor can resolve an access change without delay.
Common situations and the right next step
A permit is outside the property but on the same road
Check the exact street segment and ask whether traffic or footway restrictions extend to your entrance. The distance alone does not establish the effect.
The entry says “planned,” but no one has contacted you
That is normal for a public register. Contact the works owner proactively and ask property-specific access and service questions. A register listing is not an individual notification.
The dates have passed but barriers remain
Check the current status and contact the works owner with the reference. If the owner cannot resolve the issue, contact the highway authority responsible for the road. The register may lag behind activity or show a revised period.

There is work outside the home but no listing
Record the location and date, ask the crew or signed notice for the works owner, then report the missing or unclear information to the road authority. In London, TfL specifically provides a route for residents to report unlisted roadworks or events.
Keep a simple evidence record
For any work that could affect an important appointment, construction programme or service, keep:
- the register name and search date;
- a screenshot or written copy of the works reference, location, status, owner, description and dates;
- the names and contact details of the works owner and authority;
- your questions and the answers, including any agreed access or outage arrangements;
- the date on which you will check the register and contact again.
This record helps distinguish a changed plan from an inaccurate assumption and gives the authority or utility company the information needed to investigate.

Limits of what a register can tell you
Public registers describe works recorded by the works owner. They do not provide a universal home-impact score, and the reviewed official guidance supplies no national statistic for the likelihood that a listed work will affect an individual home. The practical test is therefore property-specific confirmation: compare the exact location and dates, identify the responsible organisation and ask about access and services.
Street works are necessary to provide and maintain utility and transport services, but they can be disruptive to road users. That disruption may involve traffic, footways, noise, parking or access without causing a utility outage at the property. Conversely, a small local excavation may require a service interruption even when the wider road remains open. Ask about each effect separately and keep checking until the work is complete.
