Start with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), then add your engineering discipline’s professional society, university funding office, and local chapters. SWE’s society-selected scholarship application can consider one application for every central award for which you qualify, while SWE section-selected awards use separate applications. For mentoring, compare SWE’s Mentor Network, WES MentorSET and SHPE’s MentorSHPE by eligibility, cost, matching and duration. Build a network through campus and professional sections, conferences and affinity collaborations rather than relying on one organization. Program rules and dates change, so verify the live application or enrollment page before submitting information or paying a fee.
Build a short eligibility profile before searching
A scholarship search is most efficient when treated as an eligibility filter, not as an undifferentiated list. Write down the facts each application is likely to test:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Degree level and academic year (first year, continuing undergraduate, master’s, doctoral or other graduate study).
- Engineering discipline or intended specialty.
- Institution, country and state or province, plus whether the program has the accreditation an award requires.
- Current GPA and any award-specific academic threshold.
- Citizenship, residency or work authorization where stated.
- Financial-need eligibility, if requested.
- Memberships in engineering societies and any campus or local chapter.
- Projects, research, internships, employment, volunteering, leadership and community involvement.
This profile prevents wasted applications. For example, SWE’s current collegiate and graduate application says undergraduates must attend an ABET-accredited program and meet a 3.0 GPA minimum; first-year scholars have a 3.5 minimum. Individual awards can impose additional requirements, so meeting the general threshold does not guarantee eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSeparate hard requirements from preferences
Create two columns for every opportunity. Put non-negotiable conditions—such as study level, accreditation, citizenship, location, GPA or membership—in the first column. Put preferences, such as a particular technical interest or leadership background, in the second. A preference may strengthen an application but should not be treated as a substitute for a required condition. This simple distinction helps you stop early when a mandatory criterion is missing and spend more time on awards where your profile genuinely fits.

Check how accreditation is described
Do not assume that the word “engineering” on an award page means every engineering program qualifies. SWE’s stated ABET requirement is specific to the applicable undergraduate track. Confirm whether the rule concerns the institution, a particular degree program, or a country-specific equivalent. If you are unsure, ask the award administrator before submitting rather than guessing from a school’s general reputation.
Use SWE’s two scholarship routes
Society-selected awards
SWE’s society-selected process is the best first stop for many women in engineering. One application considers an applicant for every society-selected award for which she qualifies. The current SWE application page reports 400 scholarships totaling more than $1.7 million for 2026. SWE’s overview page uses a different wording—“nearly $1.8 million in 2026”—so treat each figure as the statement of its respective page rather than combining them into a new total.
The central application is not a promise that every applicant will be considered for every award. Your academic stage, field, accreditation, geography, membership, citizenship and award-specific questions determine the matches. Read the criteria attached to each award in the portal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Section-selected awards
Local SWE sections administer their own scholarships. These are separate from the society-selected application and require direct applications to the relevant section. Search sections connected to your university, city or region, then read their individual deadlines and eligibility rules. A section may have a different study-year requirement, geographic boundary, essay prompt or membership expectation than the central program.
Dates that require a live check
SWE’s pages currently show conflicting dates for the collegiate and graduate cycle. The application page lists an opening date of December 1, 2026 and a January 31, 2027 deadline; the overview page lists February 8, 2027 as that deadline. Both pages show February 8 as the opening date and March 31 as the deadline for first-year and India applicants. Do not plan around one static calendar entry: open the live application, record the date shown there and check again before submission.
An example of award-specific rules
SWE lists the GE Vernova Women’s Network Scholarship as $5,000 with 15 available awards. Its listing also includes U.S. citizenship, membership, degree, field, geography and preference criteria. It illustrates why a headline amount is not a universal opportunity; read the full eligibility language before investing time in an essay.
Add discipline-specific and campus sources
Professional engineering societies
After SWE, search the society that represents your field. ASME’s scholarship finder covers mechanical-engineering pathways and has individual eligibility rules. The associated 2026–27 universal applications are reported closed on the relevant level pages, so use those pages to understand the program and recheck the next cycle rather than assuming an application is open now.

Other discipline societies may list awards through national offices, regional sections or student divisions. Compare the study year, major, accreditation, geography, GPA, membership, documentation and exact deadline for every listing. A society’s general scholarship page is a directory, not evidence that each award is currently accepting applications.
University and department channels
Check your university financial-aid office, engineering dean’s office, department administrator and graduate-school funding page. Ask whether applications are submitted centrally, through a department, or directly to a donor. Faculty advisers and project supervisors can also know about small departmental awards that do not rank highly in general web searches. Treat these as search routes, then confirm the official rules for each opportunity.
Local chapters and community organizations
Campus and professional chapters can surface regional awards, employer-sponsored funds, conference travel grants and peer referrals. Look for active meeting calendars and a named contact rather than assuming a chapter is currently operating. Local opportunities often depend on residence, a nearby school, a particular employer or participation in chapter activities.
Keep a geographic and currency checklist
Program terms are not interchangeable across countries. SWE’s central listings include select India scholars while also using U.S.-framed accreditation requirements for some tracks. WES is a UK organization and quotes its non-member mentee price in pounds. Record the country, currency, time zone and any local eligibility language beside each opportunity. That prevents applying a U.S. accreditation rule to a different track or overlooking a location restriction.

Prepare an application file that can be adapted
- Create a master resume. Include projects, design or laboratory work, research, internships, employment, volunteering, leadership, technical tools and measurable results. Keep a longer version for reference and make a tailored one-page version when an award asks for it.
- Draft a fact sheet. Record GPA scale, expected graduation, accreditation, courses, project titles, leadership dates, financial-need context and contact details. This reduces inconsistencies between forms.
- Collect transcripts correctly. Follow the award’s instructions on unofficial versus official records, file format and date. SWE says transcripts and a resume may be requested from selected students, so keep a current copy ready without sending documents that were not requested.
- Secure one strong recommender early. SWE requires one letter and recommends someone who has known you for at least two years, is not a relative, and can discuss character, work ethic, leadership, development or STEM involvement. Ask well before the deadline, provide your resume and goals, and confirm the submission method.
- Answer the prompt, not a generic essay question. Explain the engineering problem you want to work on, what you did, what you learned and how the funding changes your next step. Use specific evidence rather than repeating that engineering needs more women.
- Track every requirement. Use a spreadsheet with the award name, official page, opening date, deadline and time zone, eligibility checks, documents, recommender status, membership requirement and submission confirmation.
Make the recommendation request easy to answer
Send your recommender a single packet: the award name, exact prompt, deadline and upload instructions, plus your resume, transcript summary, goals and two or three examples you hope the letter can address. Explain whether the award emphasizes leadership, technical development, financial need or community involvement. A person who knows your work well can write more specifically than someone chosen only for job title. Check the portal afterward to confirm that the letter was received; do not assume an email from you means the upload is complete.
Use a final-submission check
Before clicking submit, compare every answer with your fact sheet. Confirm names, dates, GPA scale, expected graduation, citizenship wording, file readability and recommender status. Save a PDF or screenshot of the completed form and confirmation message. If the portal closes at a stated time, note its time zone rather than relying on midnight in your own location.
Choose mentoring by goal, access and structure
Mentoring works best when you choose a defined outcome: passing a difficult course, selecting a specialization, preparing applications, finding an internship, developing leadership skills, or navigating a first engineering workplace. SWE states that mutual support and the development of professional and personal networks are core values of the organization. That describes an intended structure, not a guaranteed career or scholarship result; the sources do not establish an independent success-rate statistic.
SWE Mentor Network
SWE’s Mentor Network is available to paid SWE members. Before joining, check the current membership price, mentor availability, matching process and whether the current cycle is open. Prepare two or three goals and the type of experience you need—such as civil infrastructure, construction project management, controls, software, manufacturing or research—so a match can be evaluated for fit.

WES MentorSET
WES MentorSET describes one-to-one matching for a twelve-month partnership. It lists £120 per year for non-member mentees. WES is a UK organization, so geography, currency, time zones and eligibility may matter for someone studying or working elsewhere. Confirm the current terms, meeting expectations, matching timetable and member pricing before paying.
SHPE’s MentorSHPE
SHPE describes MentorSHPE as one-to-one mentoring for people in STEM. Compare its current eligibility, matching approach, program dates and meeting expectations with your goals. If cultural community and representation are important to you, ask how the program supports that need rather than assuming every mentor pool has the same discipline or location coverage.
Questions to ask before enrolling
- Is membership required, and what is the recurring cost?
- Is there a separate mentee fee?
- How are mentors matched: discipline, career stage, location, identity, goals or availability?
- How long does the relationship last, and are meetings scheduled or self-directed?
- What happens if the match is inactive or unsuitable?
- Are communications online, in person or both?
- What privacy, safeguarding and professional-conduct rules apply?
Prepare for the first mentoring meeting
Bring a one-page goal sheet with your current stage, the outcome you want by the end of the program and three questions. Agree on a realistic meeting rhythm, preferred communication channel, boundaries around confidential workplace or academic information and how progress will be reviewed. After each conversation, write down one action, one introduction or resource to pursue and the date you will report back. If a match remains inactive or unsuitable, use the program’s stated rematching or contact process instead of quietly abandoning the program.
Build a professional network through several routes
Campus and local sections
Join a campus or nearby professional section that actually holds meetings, technical talks, site visits or application workshops. Attend more than one event before deciding whether the group fits your schedule and interests. Introduce yourself with a specific question about a project, course or career path; that creates a more useful connection than handing someone a resume without context.
Conferences and technical events
Use conferences for targeted conversations. Review the program in advance, identify speakers or exhibitors working in your area and prepare a 20-second introduction. After the event, send a short follow-up that names the session or question you discussed. Ask about a technical resource, student chapter or informational interview rather than immediately requesting a job.
Affinity and collaborative networks
SWE documents joint work through the Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative with AISES, NSBE, SHPE and WEPAN. Such collaborations can broaden your network beyond one discipline or local chapter. Check whether an event is open to students, professionals or allies, and whether participation is national, regional or online.
Online activity with a purpose
Keep a professional profile that states your degree stage, engineering interests, projects and location at a level you are comfortable sharing. Follow societies and technical groups, contribute a thoughtful question, and record contacts in a private tracker. Networking is not a requirement to disclose personal information; use official channels and professional boundaries.

Use a simple follow-up rhythm
Within a few days of meeting someone, send a brief note that identifies where you met and what you found useful. If you requested a resource, wait for the agreed timeframe before following up. Keep a private record of the person’s role, interests and the next agreed action. This turns a one-time event into a professional relationship without sending repeated generic messages.
A practical 30-day search plan
- Days 1–3: complete your eligibility profile and list three target engineering disciplines or roles.
- Days 4–7: review SWE’s society-selected and section-selected opportunities; save the live eligibility and deadline pages.
- Week 2: search ASME or the relevant discipline society, then contact your university financial-aid and department offices.
- Week 3: adapt your resume, request the recommendation letter, obtain transcript instructions and draft responses for the strongest matches.
- Week 4: attend a chapter or technical event, compare the three mentoring programs against your goal and budget, and submit any complete application before its verified deadline.
Recheck every date in the application portal, especially for SWE’s conflicting collegiate and graduate listings. Keep confirmation emails and a copy of the final submission.
What to do after the first month
Review which applications are complete, which documents are still missing and which contacts responded. Remove opportunities whose mandatory criteria you cannot meet, and add the next cycle date to your calendar for programs that are closed. For mentoring, assess whether meetings are producing the agreed actions; for networking, attend one recurring activity rather than collecting disconnected contacts. A monthly review keeps the search manageable and prevents old listings from remaining on your active list.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Applying solely because an award says “for women.” Read discipline, degree, accreditation, citizenship and geography requirements first.
- Assuming one SWE form covers every SWE award. Society-selected and section-selected scholarships have different processes.
- Using an old deadline. Pages can disagree or change between cycles; verify the live portal.
- Waiting to ask for a letter. A recommender needs time to write a specific letter and complete any upload process.
- Paying without checking the service. Confirm current membership or mentee fees, duration, matching and cancellation terms.
- Expecting a guaranteed outcome. Available descriptions do not establish scholarship odds or mentoring career results.
- Joining inactive groups. Look for recent events, current officers and a working contact address.
- Submitting the same essay everywhere. Reusing factual examples is efficient, but each response should answer that award’s prompt and priorities.
- Ignoring small local awards. A section or department opportunity may have a narrower applicant pool, but it still requires its own eligibility review and deadline.
- Confusing membership with eligibility. Joining a society may be required for one award or mentoring program but irrelevant to another; verify the rule instead of paying automatically.
How to compare opportunities side by side
| Need | Starting points | Compare |
|---|---|---|
| College or graduate funding | SWE society-selected and section-selected awards; ASME awards for relevant mechanical-engineering paths; university and department funds | Study year, major, GPA, accreditation, geography, membership, financial need, documents and verified deadline |
| Early-career or ongoing mentoring | SWE Mentor Network, WES MentorSET, SHPE MentorSHPE | Membership or fee, eligibility, matching, discipline and geographic fit, duration, goals and whether the current program is active |
| Peer and professional network | Campus or local sections, conferences, affinity groups and professional societies | Recent activity, student or professional fit, cost, field alignment and online or in-person access |
Use the comparison to choose a small number of strong matches. A focused application with verified eligibility and a prepared recommender is more useful than a large list of opportunities you cannot document or complete.
