For a U.S. trip, start with the Federal Highway Administration’s National Traffic and Road Closure Information page, select every state on your route, and follow each link to the responsible state transportation agency or 511 traveler-information service. Open the official map or alert list, inspect the road and travel direction, read the closure or work-zone details, and refresh the information shortly before departure.
Use the report to plan; use signs, flaggers, barriers, and temporary traffic controls at the site to drive. Conditions can change, coverage differs by jurisdiction, and no national source guarantees that every closure will appear immediately. A second check—and a local-agency check for county or city roads—prevents many avoidable surprises.

What you should check before starting the engine
A reliable pre-drive check has four layers: the correct road authority, the official traveler-information service, the detailed incident or project notice, and a final refresh. The FHWA national page is a directory, not a live nationwide closure map. Its displayed update date is April 20, 2026, and its purpose is to send you to state traffic and road-closure information.
- Authority: identify the state, county, city, toll-road operator, or other agency responsible for each road segment.
- Official feed: use the agency’s map, alert list, 511 telephone service, or other traveler-information channel.
- Details: verify the exact road, direction, timing, restriction, expected impact, and detour.
- Freshness: check again close to departure, then obey the temporary controls you encounter on the road.
For a short trip within one state, this can take only a few minutes. For a long trip, repeat the process for every state and for any local segment that the state service does not cover.

Step 1: Identify who operates each road
Start with the FHWA state directory
Search for the FHWA National Traffic and Road Closure Information page and choose the state where your trip begins. If the route crosses state lines, record every state it enters rather than assuming one state’s feed covers the entire journey. The directory links onward to state traffic, closure, and traveler-information resources.
Check local roads separately
State transportation departments may not list every city street, county road, subdivision entrance, park road, or privately operated facility. When your route includes those segments, look for the responsible local transportation, public works, emergency-management, or road-maintenance agency. A state map can show a highway closure while omitting a flooded municipal street that blocks your planned approach.
Account for special operators
Toll facilities, bridges, tunnels, ferries, tribal roads, and major venues can publish their own restrictions. If your route depends on one, check that operator’s official notice in addition to the state feed. The objective is not to collect every possible app; it is to make sure the agency responsible for each critical link has been checked.
Step 2: Open the official map or alert service
State and regional services commonly combine several tools. Depending on the jurisdiction, you may find an interactive map, a list of incidents and construction, subscription alerts, a 511 telephone service, roadway cameras, electronic-message-sign reports, traffic speeds, weather or event notices, and links to social-media updates. Not every service offers every feature, and a telephone menu may contain information that is not presented in the web map.
- Choose the trip area. Set the state, region, county, or route view that contains your departure, destination, and connecting roads.
- Turn on relevant layers. Select incidents, construction, closures, lane restrictions, cameras, message signs, or weather when those controls are available.
- Search the route. Use the highway number, street name, interchange, bridge, or nearest town. Also inspect the map around entrances and exits where a local closure could affect access.
- Review the alert list. A list view can reveal an item hidden by overlapping map markers or a zoom level that combines several incidents.
- Save or subscribe where useful. Email, text, or push alerts can help on a multi-day trip, but they supplement—not replace—the final manual check.
If the site asks for a travel direction, select the direction you will actually drive. “Eastbound” and “westbound,” or “northbound” and “southbound,” can have different lane closures and detours on the same project.
Step 3: Read the notice behind every map marker
A colored symbol is only a starting point. Open the full notice and capture the facts that determine whether you can pass, when you can pass, and how much extra time or distance the restriction may require.

Location and limits
Confirm the road name or route number, direction, municipality, milepost, interchange, bridge, or cross street. Determine whether the restriction affects one point, a ramp, a lane group, or a continuous section. “Construction on Route 12” is not enough to tell whether your exit remains open.

Dates and daily hours
Look for a start date, end date, and the hours when the control is active. A project may run for months while a full closure occurs only overnight or on selected weekends. Treat a notice without clear timing as a reason to seek more information from the agency or 511 service rather than assuming the road is open.
What is restricted
Identify a full closure, partial closure, lane reduction, shoulder closure, ramp closure, alternating one-way traffic, width limit, weight limit, height restriction, or moving operation. Restrictions can affect commercial vehicles, trailers, wide loads, pedestrians, bicycles, and emergency access differently from ordinary passenger traffic.
Expected impact and detour
Agency notices may provide expected delays, queueing, reduced speeds, or a recommended alternate route. They may also publish a signed detour, not merely a suggestion to “use an alternate route.” Follow the published detour’s roads and turning instructions; an improvised shortcut can lead into another closure or a road unsuitable for your vehicle.
Work-zone phase and changing conditions
Construction information can describe a planned lane closure, a phase change, or an active operation. A notice prepared for planned work may not reflect a crash, weather response, or emergency closure that occurs later. Check the incident list as well as the construction layer, and look for a posted “last updated” time when the service provides one.

| Channel | Best coverage | Useful information | Advantages | Limitations to allow for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FHWA national directory | State-by-state starting point | Links to state traffic and closure resources | Helps locate the correct state service | It is a directory, not a complete live list of every closure |
| State DOT or regional traveler-information map | State highways and participating regional roads | Incidents, construction, closures, lane restrictions, speeds, cameras, message signs, and sometimes weather or events | Closest connection to the agency managing the roadway | Layers, map coverage, and update practices differ by jurisdiction |
| 511 telephone service | State or regional service area | Recorded or menu-driven incident, construction, and traffic information | Useful when driving is not safe for screen use or internet access is poor | Menus and available details vary; it may not cover local streets |
| Agency alerts | Subscribed state, region, route, or project | New or changed incidents and planned work notifications | Can warn you without repeatedly opening a map | Subscription filters can omit a road, and an alert is not a guarantee of completeness |
| Roadway cameras | Selected camera locations | Visual view of queues, weather, or lane conditions | Provides direct context where a camera is available | Camera locations are limited, images can be delayed, and a clear frame does not prove the road ahead is clear |
| Navigation service | Displayed route and surrounding roads | Route impact, estimated delay, and some incident markers | Convenient route-level view | No separate navigation service has been established as matching the completeness or freshness of agency feeds |
| Agency social-media updates | Followers of a particular agency or project | Selected announcements, emergency closures, and reminders | Can provide rapid notice during a major event | Posts are selective and should be checked against the agency’s formal map or alert page |
How to check a route that crosses state lines
Divide the journey into road segments and assign each segment to an authority. A state line is not the only boundary that matters: a highway may be state-managed while the final few miles are county- or city-maintained.
- Write down the primary route, alternate route, border crossings, major interchanges, and any bridge, tunnel, ferry, or toll facility.
- Use the FHWA directory to open the official service for each state.
- Search the route in both directions if your return trip is on a different date or if you will travel back on the opposite carriageway.
- Check local agencies for the destination approach, event area, construction detours, and streets that connect to the highway.
- Compare the notices’ timing with your planned arrival, not just your departure. A road open at 7 a.m. may close for a scheduled work period later in the day.
- Save the names or numbers of the relevant 511 services and agencies so you can check again at a safe stop.
For a long trip, a closure several hours away can change before you reach it. Treat early information as planning input, then make another check during a scheduled rest stop before committing to the affected segment.
Refresh immediately before departure
Work zones are planned, but their daily configuration can change because of weather, equipment, traffic, emergency repairs, or an earlier incident. FHWA identifies keeping work-zone information timely and accurate as a challenge. That is why a map opened the night before should not be your final source.

- Finish loading and route planning before opening the final update.
- Refresh each official map or alert list for the states and local areas on your route.
- Read any item whose time window overlaps your trip, even if your navigation service shows no delay.
- Check the first major interchange, the most remote portion of the route, and any known detour connection.
- Confirm that your planned alternate route is open and suitable for your vehicle.
- Write down or save the relevant agency or 511 contact information before moving.
A “no incidents reported” screen means no item is displayed by that service at that moment; it does not establish that every road is free of hazards or that an unreported local problem does not exist.
Use cameras and message-sign reports correctly
Cameras can help you judge queue length, precipitation, visibility, or whether lanes appear occupied at a specific point. They are snapshots from fixed locations, not a continuous view of the route. A camera may be several miles from the closure, show only one direction, or update less frequently than an incident feed.
Electronic-message-sign reports can reveal an official warning before you reach the sign. Match the sign’s location and direction to your trip. If a camera, sign report, and map notice disagree, give priority to the newest official notice and to the signs and traffic controls you encounter in person; do not attempt to drive through a barrier because an older online image looks clear.

Driving through an active work zone
Online information is for preparation. Once you enter the area, temporary signs, lane markings, cones, barriers, flaggers, police directions, and variable speed displays govern your actions. A project may be in a different phase from the one described online.
- Reduce speed early and leave extra following distance.
- Merge where signs and markings direct you; avoid last-second lane changes around equipment or narrowed lanes.
- Expect workers, trucks entering the roadway, uneven pavement, shifted lanes, and sudden queueing.
- Do not stop on a shoulder or in a closed lane unless directed by an authorized official.
- Never use a phone to refresh a map while moving. Pull into a legal, safe location first, or ask a passenger to handle the search without distracting the driver.
If the route is closed after you have started, follow the signed detour or pull over safely to reassess. Do not reverse, cross a median, or bypass a barricade to follow an outdated route instruction.
When information is missing or conflicting
The map has no marker, but the road looks blocked
Check the local road authority, refresh the state service, and look for an emergency-management or public-works announcement. If you are already near the obstruction, obey the physical closure and find a safe place to stop before investigating.
The notice has no end time
Look for a project page, a 511 telephone entry, a detour document, or a contact channel from the responsible agency. Plan as though the restriction may affect your arrival until an official update supplies a usable time window.
Two official notices disagree
Compare publication or update times, road direction, and exact location. A broad project notice and a newer incident notice may both be correct because they describe different controls. Use the newest item that matches your segment, and follow signs at the site.

The alternate route is also under construction
Run the same authority check on the alternate. A detour is not automatically free of work zones, width limits, low clearances, or local restrictions. For a large vehicle, confirm dimensions and weight requirements before committing.
Planning around planned construction
Planned work often provides more information than an unplanned crash, but it still requires careful reading. A project can have a long overall date range, short nightly closures, weekend full closures, and separate ramp work. Look for the phase that coincides with your travel time and for a lane-by-lane description.
When a project lists expected impact, use it to decide whether to leave earlier, select a different route, or postpone the trip. “One lane closed” can produce a substantial queue during a peak period, while the same restriction may be minor at another hour. Unless the agency states an expected delay, do not invent one from the number of lanes alone.

Rural routes may have fewer cameras and less frequent updates than major metropolitan corridors. A regional 511 service can still be the best available official source, but coverage is not uniform. Check county or municipal announcements for local roads, and allow additional time when there is no visual confirmation.
Weather can create a fast-moving restriction that is separate from a construction notice. Review weather and emergency-closure layers when the service offers them, but treat a clear work-zone status as insufficient proof that snow, flooding, fire, high winds, or debris have not affected the route.
A reusable pre-drive checklist
- ☐ List every state, county, city, toll facility, bridge, tunnel, or ferry on the route.
- ☐ Open the FHWA state directory and each relevant official traveler-information service.
- ☐ Search the route, direction, interchanges, and local approaches.
- ☐ Open every relevant incident and construction notice.
- ☐ Record location, direction, restriction, start and end times, expected impact, and detour.
- ☐ Check cameras or message-sign reports where offered, without treating them as complete coverage.
- ☐ Verify that the alternate route is open and suitable for your vehicle.
- ☐ Refresh immediately before departure.
- ☐ Save 511 or agency contact information for a safe-stop update.
- ☐ Follow posted temporary controls and never use a phone while driving.
What this process can and cannot promise
The process gives you the strongest practical starting point for agency-reported closures and work zones: the responsible state or local authority, its map or alert list, and a final check near departure. It cannot promise nationwide completeness or a particular update speed. No comparable nationwide statistic establishing the freshness or completeness of every state feed has been established, and tools differ by jurisdiction.
Use official information to make a reasoned plan, keep an alternate in reserve, and treat conditions at the roadway as controlling. That combination is more dependable than relying on a single map marker, a single app, or a check performed hours before the trip.
