How to Find Current Road Closures and Construction Delays Before You Drive

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most dependable way to check a route before driving in the United States is to open the official 511 traffic service for every state or region on your trip. Search the highway and direction you will actually use, turn on layers for closures, construction, incidents, detours and speeds, then open each event for its segment and dates. Recheck immediately before departure, and use a passenger or a safe stop for any update after you begin.

Official 511 information is more useful when you distinguish a planned work zone from an active crash, a full closure, a lane restriction or ordinary congestion. The workflow below shows how to do that without treating a colored line on a map as proof that a road is open or closed.

Use this seven-step check before departure

  1. Identify the responsible 511 service. For a U.S. trip, start with the Federal Highway Administration’s National Traffic and Road Closure Information directory. The directory, reported updated April 20, 2026, points you to each state’s traffic and closure system; it is not one nationwide route map. A trip that crosses state lines requires a check in each state.
  2. Search the route, direction and segment. Enter the highway number or route rather than only a city name. Select the direction of travel and inspect the exact interchange, county or mile segment you will use. Regional systems may let you filter by location, direction, event type and start time. SoCal 511 documents those route-planning and filtering functions for its five-county service area.
  3. Enable every relevant event layer. Turn on active closures, detours, construction or roadwork, incidents, future planned events, travel speeds and travel times. West Virginia’s 511 service, for example, separates active events from future planned events and offers additional map layers. Florida’s FL511 documents closure, detour and planned-construction layers.
  4. Open the event record. Confirm the road name, direction, affected limits, event type, start time and expected end time if supplied. A red or yellow line showing slow traffic does not by itself establish that a road is closed. The incident or closure detail is the evidence you need for a restriction.
  5. Cross-check with a camera or message sign. If the service provides a roadway camera, view the latest snapshot near the work zone. Read active electronic sign messages when available. These views can reveal queues, blocked lanes or a detour, but a camera sees only a limited portion of the route and cannot guarantee that a road will remain open or predict a later closure.
  6. Save the route or enable alerts when the service supports it. FL511 documents personalized routes and notifications after account creation. A saved route is useful for a commute or a trip with several work zones, but it does not replace opening the event details before you leave.
  7. Check again close to departure. Incidents, lane status and travel times can change between planning and leaving. Record the latest restriction and the alternative you intend to use. Once moving, have a passenger check or stop at a rest area; never hold or operate a phone while driving.

Choose the right source for the question you have

Different channels answer different parts of the same question. The responsible road agency or its 511 service is the best starting point when a closure, construction restriction or detour could change your route. A navigation app is convenient for routing and congestion context, but it should complement—not replace—the agency’s event record for a critical restriction.

Resource Best use Limits to keep in mind
FHWA national directory Finding the official traffic and closure site for an unfamiliar state It is a directory, not a single nationwide map. You must open the relevant state or regional service.
State or regional 511 website or app Officially presented incidents, planned work, closures, detours, speeds, travel times, alerts and, in some areas, cameras Coverage, filters, phone access and update practices vary. Some feeds combine agency information with partner or crowd-sourced reports.
Telephone 511 On-demand route information when you cannot safely look at a screen Availability and menu prompts differ by region. Call before travel, at a safe stop or through a passenger.
Navigation app Convenient route calculation and a second view of congestion Compare a closure or road restriction with the responsible agency or 511 source. Data layers can come from different providers.
Cameras and electronic message signs Visual confirmation of queues, lane conditions and posted instructions A snapshot covers only one viewpoint and is not a prediction of future conditions.

Florida describes FL511 data as coming primarily from Florida Department of Transportation sensors and cameras, with incident information also received from Road Rangers, the Florida Highway Patrol, Waze, and city and county law enforcement. That mixture can make the service comprehensive, but it also means the map may contain different kinds of observations. SoCal 511 describes agency sources and a third-party provider for speed and travel-time information. Treat each service’s stated coverage and data sources as local facts, not a national standard.

Read a 511 map without misreading a delay

Search the road you will actually drive

A citywide search can miss an event several miles outside the city boundary or on the opposite carriageway. Enter the route number, choose northbound, southbound, eastbound or westbound as appropriate, and zoom until the event limits are visible. For a multi-leg trip, repeat the search for each highway and connector rather than assuming one map view contains every local road.

Separate active events from planned work

Use the service’s date or status filter to distinguish an event happening now from a future construction notice. Planned work may list a start date, an end date, nighttime hours, recurring lane closures or a proposed detour. An active incident may have no reliable end time. Keep both visible: planned work tells you what is expected, while an incident layer catches a newly blocked lane or crash on the same route.

Inspect direction and affected limits

Construction often affects one direction, one ramp or a short segment rather than the entire highway. Read the event text for lane count, shoulder or ramp restrictions, the cross street or mile marker and any signed detour. If the notice gives only a broad county or corridor, use a camera or message sign as a second check and allow extra time.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Use speeds as context, not proof of a closure

Color-coded speeds show how traffic is moving at the time of the observation. A slow line may be a work-zone queue, a crash, weather or ordinary peak demand. Conversely, an apparently normal speed does not prove that a future closure will not occur. Only the event details, agency notice or posted sign establish the restriction.

Check cameras and signs at the right time

Open a camera closest to the affected segment and note its timestamp. Compare what you see with the event record. A clear image can show that a queue has not reached your approach; it cannot show conditions beyond the frame. Electronic message signs may display a lane closure or detour that has not yet produced severe congestion, so read the message even when the speed layer looks normal.

Know whether you are facing construction, a closure or an incident

Map or alert label What it usually means What to verify before leaving
Planned construction or roadwork Scheduled maintenance, reconstruction or a recurring work window Dates, hours, direction, lane or ramp limits, and the signed detour.
Active closure A road, lane, ramp or bridge is currently unavailable Exact closed segment, closure start time, reopening estimate and whether emergency access or a detour is specified.
Incident or blocking crash An unplanned event that may be changing quickly Verification time, blocked lanes, direction, queue location and the agency’s latest estimate.
Detour A posted or recommended alternate path around a restriction Whether the detour applies to your vehicle type and direction, and whether it returns you to the intended route.
Congestion or speed reduction Traffic is moving below normal speed Cause, trend and whether a separate closure or work-zone notice explains it.

Do not infer that a construction icon means a full closure. Many projects keep traffic moving through a narrowed lane or shift traffic to the opposite side. Likewise, an incident symbol can remain on a map after lanes reopen while crews clear debris. The event’s status and timestamps are more informative than the icon alone.

How current and accurate is the information?

Federal real-time-information rules define design requirements for covered state programs; they are not a promise that every local road or every app will update instantly. The 2024 edition of 23 CFR §511.309 specifies that information for full construction activities closing or reopening a road or lane should be made available within 20 minutes outside metropolitan areas and within 10 minutes within metropolitan areas. Short-term or intermittent closures shorter than those thresholds are excluded from that particular minimum. For blocking incidents, the comparable clock begins when the incident is verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same rule sets a designed minimum availability of 90 percent and a designed accuracy of 85 percent. The regulation states: “The designed accuracy for a real-time information program shall be 85 percent accurate at a minimum, or have a maximum error rate of 15 percent.” These are program-design requirements, not a measured score for a particular state app and not a guarantee for a newly changed condition.

Service-specific statements can be more precise. SoCal 511 says its site traffic information updates every minute, while West Virginia 511 cautions that some road-condition observations are not updated frequently and may vary across an area. Do not apply one region’s cadence to another. Recheck near departure and confirm a critical restriction in the event detail, agency notice or message sign.

Use telephone 511 and in-trip updates safely

Before you move

If a state offers telephone 511, call while parked and follow the prompts for your route, direction and destination. Write down the reported closure, detour or delay before starting the engine. Menu wording and service availability differ by region, so a failed call does not prove that the road is clear; use the state’s website or app as an alternative.

When someone else is in the vehicle

Have a passenger open the 511 map, read event details and compare the proposed detour with your route. The passenger should handle the phone, not the driver. A passenger can also watch for a changed sign or report a new restriction through the service when that function is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you are driving alone

Do not hold or operate a phone in motion. Pull into a legal rest area, service area or other safe stopping place before calling 511 or checking the map. Avoid stopping on a shoulder unless directed by an emergency official; a shoulder can be part of the work zone or needed for responders.

Plan multi-state and rural trips in separate checks

Coverage and features do not follow state borders in a single uniform system. For a route crossing two or more states, open each state’s official 511 service and check the segment from the border to the next major decision point. Repeat the process for county roads or local connectors that a state highway map may not display in detail.

In rural areas, fewer sensors and cameras can mean less visual confirmation. A blank map may indicate limited coverage rather than a guarantee of normal conditions. Read any service disclaimer about observation frequency, use the latest agency notice available, and allow a time margin when the route has no practical alternate.

What to do when sources disagree

  1. Check timestamps first. A one-minute traffic update and a ten-minute-old camera image are not equivalent observations. Note which source is newer.
  2. Prefer the responsible agency for a legal restriction. If a 511 event record says a ramp or lane is closed while a navigation app still routes through it, follow the closure notice and posted signs.
  3. Confirm direction and segment. Apparent conflicts often involve opposite carriageways, a frontage road, a nearby ramp or an event that has moved.
  4. Look for a status change. An incident may be cleared while a construction lane closure remains, or a planned event may have begun earlier than its broad date range.
  5. Choose the safer interpretation when uncertainty remains. Use the published detour, delay departure, or select a route with a dependable alternate rather than trying to pass an unclear restriction.

A five-minute pre-drive checklist

  • Identify every state or regional 511 service on the route.
  • Search each highway by direction and inspect the exact segment, ramps and connectors.
  • Turn on active closures, incidents, construction, planned events, detours and speeds.
  • Open each event and record its limits, timestamps, lane status and detour.
  • Check the nearest camera and any electronic message sign.
  • Compare a critical restriction with the responsible agency’s notice rather than relying only on a navigation app.
  • Recheck immediately before departure.
  • Give the update to a passenger or stop safely before checking again during the trip.

Example: checking a route that crosses two states

Suppose you are driving north on an interstate from one state into the next. Start with the FHWA directory to identify both state systems. In the first state’s 511 map, select northbound, activate construction, incidents, closures and planned events, and open every marker between your origin and the border. Note whether a work zone narrows lanes or closes a ramp. Then repeat the same search in the second state’s system from the border to your destination.

If the first state shows a planned overnight lane closure and the second shows an active crash, treat them differently: schedule around the planned window if possible, and choose a current detour for the crash. Check cameras where available, then perform one final refresh before leaving. If the crash clears, the planned work may still remain; clearing one event does not clear the other.

Bottom line

For a current answer, use the official 511 service for every state or region on your route, search by highway and direction, read the event record, and distinguish planned work from active incidents. Cameras, signs, telephone 511 and navigation apps are useful cross-checks, but none eliminates the need to verify the responsible agency’s details. Conditions can change after you look, so refresh before departure and check only through a passenger or while safely stopped once you are on the road.
