Start with the official JobApplyNI apprenticeship search, then check construction employers’ own recruitment pages, recruitment websites and local training providers. Contact employers directly as well: for an ApprenticeshipsNI or Higher Level Apprenticeship, you normally need an employer willing to employ you before a training contractor can confirm eligibility and arrange the training plan. If you are not ready for direct entry, ask a local college or provider about Level 1 foundation, Level 2 progression courses or a Level 2 Traineeship.
How construction apprenticeships work in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland apprenticeships are employment-based. You do not usually enrol on a college course first and wait for an employer later. You find a suitable vacancy, or persuade an employer to take you on, and then complete the apprenticeship with that employer and an approved apprenticeship training contractor.

For ApprenticeshipsNI and Higher Level Apprenticeships, the practical sequence is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Find a vacancy or an employer. Search JobApplyNI, employer and recruitment websites, local newspapers and vacancy information held by training providers. You can also call firms and tell them you want to start an apprenticeship.
- Apply like you would for any job. Read the job specification carefully; it should state how to apply, the closing date and any entry requirements.
- Secure the employer’s agreement. You must be employed, or have found an employer willing to employ you, before the apprenticeship can proceed.
- Contact an apprenticeship training contractor with the employer. The contractor checks eligibility, registers interest in training when a place is available and meets with you and the employer to agree a training plan.
The Northern Ireland construction framework states that an apprentice is employed from day one. The duration is agreed by the apprentice, employer and training contractor, so do not assume every trade or provider has the same timescale.

Where to look for vacancies and employers
JobApplyNI: the first search
Use JobApplyNI’s apprenticeship listings, including Higher Level Apprenticeships, as your starting point. Search by construction, the trade you want and your local area. Open the full job specification rather than relying on a short search result: the specification contains the application method and role-specific requirements.
Vacancies change quickly. Save searches where the service allows it, check regularly and apply promptly when a suitable role appears. A listing is an opening at that time, not a guarantee that the employer will still be recruiting when you return to it.
Construction companies and contractors
Make a list of building contractors, house builders, civil engineering firms, specialist subcontractors and facilities companies operating near you. Check each company’s recruitment or careers page and look for words such as apprentice, trainee, craft, site operative, construction, joinery, brickwork, painting or maintenance.

A company does not have to advertise an apprenticeship in the same week you contact it. A concise call or email can ask whether it expects to recruit an apprentice or entry-level worker, which trades it supports and who handles applications. Keep a record of the company, contact person, date, response and any requested documents so that you can follow up once without repeatedly contacting the same person.
Recruitment websites, newspapers and local offices
Search general recruitment websites and local newspaper vacancy pages as well as construction-specific listings. Local Jobs and Benefits offices can help you identify vacancies and application support. The official getting-started guidance also recommends asking training providers whether they know of employers with vacancies.
Use the employer named in an advert as the source of truth. Recruitment adverts can be out of date or omit an eligibility condition; confirm the closing date, location, hours, qualification and training arrangements before travelling to an interview.
Colleges and apprenticeship training providers
Local colleges and training providers can explain which construction pathways they deliver, when the next intake begins and whether they know of employers seeking apprentices. They can also tell you what to do if you do not yet meet a vacancy’s entry criteria.

Careers Service advice
The Department for the Economy’s Careers Service is an impartial, all-age careers information, advice and guidance service. Advisers work from Careers Resource Centres, Jobs and Benefits Offices and JobCentres around Northern Ireland. Use an adviser to compare trades, check progression options, review an application or identify local providers without relying on advice from a single employer.
A practical application process
1. Choose a realistic search area and trade shortlist
Decide how far you can travel each day and whether you can reach an early construction start time by public transport or car. Then shortlist two or three occupations. Construction includes hands-on craft work and technical, planning and supervisory roles; a narrow choice can make your search unnecessarily slow, while a completely open application makes it harder to explain your motivation.
Useful search terms include the occupation itself plus “apprentice”, “trainee”, “craft” or “entry level”. Check the exact occupation in the advert because similar titles can lead to different qualifications and site duties.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Check the specification before applying
- Note the employer, work location, start date, hours and closing date.
- Record the stated school, Essential Skills, driving, age or other eligibility conditions.
- Check whether the advert is an ApprenticeshipsNI, Higher Level Apprenticeship or a non-apprentice entry-level job.
- Identify the requested application method and documents.
Do not assume that a Level 2 qualification automatically completes every construction trade. The framework sets different progression requirements by occupation, and some trades require Level 3 for recognition as fully qualified.
3. Prepare a focused application
Put your most relevant evidence first: practical projects, school or college work, work experience, reliability, safe working, attendance, teamwork and willingness to learn. Explain why the particular trade and employer interest you. If you have used hand tools, measured materials, read drawings, worked outdoors or followed a risk assessment, describe what you did and what you learned without overstating your experience.
Follow the vacancy’s instructions exactly. If it asks for an online form, do not substitute a generic email. If it requests certificates, provide copies or explain when you can supply them. Ask a Careers Service adviser, college tutor or provider to check spelling, clarity and whether your examples answer the employer’s questions.
4. Contact employers professionally
When calling, introduce yourself, state the trade and area you want, ask whether the firm is recruiting or expects to recruit, and ask for the correct application route. Have your availability and key qualifications in front of you. If emailing, use a clear subject line, a short message and an attached CV only when requested.

5. Prepare for the interview
Research the company’s work before the interview, as construction careers guidance recommends. Be ready to explain why you chose the trade, how you respond to instructions, what you do when you make a mistake and how you would work safely on a busy site. Bring requested certificates and evidence of identity or eligibility, and ask who the training contractor is, where off-the-job training takes place and how progress is assessed.
Ask about the employment terms, start date, working pattern, travel, protective equipment, training release and the qualification pathway. These are decisions between you and the employer; do not buy tools or equipment before you know what the employer supplies and what the role actually requires.
Entry requirements and the Northern Ireland construction framework
What the Level 2 construction framework contains
The cited Northern Ireland construction framework is Framework Number 08 Issue 35: 09/26. It requires both a competence-based and a knowledge-based qualification, or a combined equivalent, in the chosen pathway, plus specified Essential Skills.
The framework lists:
- Level 1 Communication Essential Skill.
- Level 1 Application of Number Essential Skill.
- Digital ICT Essential Skill at Entry Level 3, or work towards Level 1 where Entry Level 3 is already held.
Existing qualifications may be assessed for exemption. A training contractor or provider must check your certificates and the precise pathway; do not assume that a similar qualification automatically counts.
Trades where Level 3 is needed for full qualification recognition
The framework identifies the following occupations as requiring Level 3 for recognition as fully qualified:
| Occupation | What to verify before enrolling |
|---|---|
| Painting and decorating | The Level 3 progression point and the exact qualification title. |
| Bricklaying | Whether the vacancy follows the craft pathway and how Level 3 is reached. |
| Carpentry and joinery | Whether the role is site carpentry, bench joinery or another pathway. |
| Plant maintenance | The machinery specialism and any additional employer requirements. |
| Wall and floor tiling | The pathway and practical evidence required for progression. |
| Plastering | The qualification level and assessment schedule offered by the provider. |
| Roofing | The roofing specialism, site conditions and Level 3 route. |
Ask the employer and contractor to write down the intended qualification level and progression route. This prevents confusion between finishing a particular apprenticeship stage and being recognised as fully qualified in the occupation.
If you are not ready for direct apprenticeship entry
Level 1 foundation courses
A Level 1 foundation trade course at a local college or training provider can build basic practical skills, site awareness and confidence. It may be suitable if you have little experience or need to strengthen your preparation before approaching employers.

Level 2 progression courses
A Level 2 progression full-time trade course can provide a further step towards an apprenticeship with an employer. Ask the provider whether the course is designed to lead into a specific apprenticeship, how work placements operate and what evidence employers expect after completion.

These courses are options, not an automatic prerequisite. If you already meet an apprenticeship’s entry requirements, you do not have to complete a foundation or progression course first.
Level 2 Traineeships
The Department for the Economy lists Traineeships as a Level 2 education and skills opportunity for people who are not yet in employment. A Traineeship may be relevant when you need structured preparation before competing for an apprenticeship. Confirm current eligibility, local availability, start dates and progression arrangements with the named provider.
Other preparation and Essential Skills support
The Department also lists Skills for Life and Work and Essential Skills support among its citizen-facing programmes. Eligibility and local provision can change, so discuss your circumstances with the Careers Service or provider rather than assuming a programme is open to you.
Choosing between the main routes
| Route | Employer secured at the start? | Typical purpose | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| ApprenticeshipsNI or Higher Level Apprenticeship | Yes. You must be employed or have an employer willing to employ you. | Earn employment experience while completing the agreed training and qualifications. | Which contractor is involved, what is the qualification pathway, and when does training begin? |
| Level 1 foundation trade course | No employer is required before the course starts. | Build basic trade preparation when you are not ready for direct entry. | What practical work, progression and employer links are included? |
| Level 2 progression trade course | Usually no employer at enrolment. | Develop a stronger trade base and move towards an apprenticeship. | Which apprenticeship occupations accept the course and how are applications supported? |
| Level 2 Traineeship | Designed for people not yet in employment. | Combine education and skills development before entering work. | Who is eligible locally and what progression destinations are available? |
Your best route depends on your current qualifications, practical experience, travel options and the availability of employers and training places in your area. A Careers Service adviser can help you compare them without committing to a single provider.
Construction occupations to explore
CITB describes more than 100 different construction apprenticeships across the UK, from hands-on occupations such as bricklaying, plastering and flooring to technical, planning and supervisory roles. That is a UK-wide description, not a count of Northern Ireland vacancies or available places.
Use the breadth of occupations to test your assumptions. For example, someone interested in practical work might compare bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, tiling or roofing. Someone who prefers technical organisation might investigate planning, surveying-related support, site supervision or other technical pathways advertised locally. Confirm that the specific occupation and qualification are available in Northern Ireland before relying on a national description.
Support, adjustments and personal circumstances
Disability and additional support
Tell the training contractor about a disability or other support need as early as possible. Official guidance says the contractor will organise additional support with a specially trained provider. You can also ask the employer and provider how adjustments will work during recruitment, classroom learning, assessment and site activities.
Recommended Free Tools
When travel or timing is difficult
Construction starts can be early and training may take place at a different site or college. Before accepting an offer, map the journey for the actual start time, check the cost and reliability of transport and ask whether training days are released at a fixed location. A role that is unsuitable to reach consistently can become an attendance problem even when the trade is right.

If you are unsure which trade fits
Ask a Careers Service adviser for an impartial discussion, then speak to a college or training provider about the practical content of shortlisted courses. Compare the work environment, physical demands, qualification levels, progression and local vacancies rather than choosing solely by job title.
Common problems and how to fix them
“I cannot find an advert in my area.”
Widen the radius, check JobApplyNI at different times, search employer pages and contact firms directly. Ask Jobs and Benefits offices and training providers about employers they know. Construction recruitment is spread across employers and subcontractors, so one search site will not show every opportunity.
“An employer says I need a qualification I do not have.”
Ask whether the requirement is essential for the specific role or a preferred standard. If you are not eligible yet, discuss a Level 1 foundation course, Level 2 progression course or Traineeship with a local provider. Do not enrol blindly; verify that the course leads towards the occupation you want.
“I have an employer but no training plan.”
Ask the employer to identify the apprenticeship training contractor. The contractor must check eligibility, confirm training availability and meet with both parties to agree the plan. Until those steps are complete, you do not have confirmation of the apprenticeship arrangements.
“I completed Level 2; am I fully qualified?”
Not necessarily. The Northern Ireland framework identifies seven occupations where Level 3 is required for recognition as fully qualified. Check your occupation’s exact pathway and progression point with the contractor or provider.
“I need equipment before applying.”
Do not assume you must buy tools or protective equipment. Ask the employer what is supplied, what must be worn at interview or induction and whether any personal items are required after you are offered the role. The vacancy and employer should define the requirement.
Your Northern Ireland apprenticeship checklist
- Choose two or three construction occupations and a realistic travel area.
- Search JobApplyNI, including Higher Level Apprenticeships.
- Check employer and recruitment websites, local newspapers and provider vacancy lists.
- Call suitable employers and ask about current or forthcoming apprentice and entry-level recruitment.
- Read each job specification and record its requirements and closing date.
- Prepare a tailored CV or application with practical examples and accurate qualifications.
- Use the Careers Service or a provider to review your choices and application.
- If you receive an offer, confirm employment terms, the training contractor and the qualification pathway.
- Ask the contractor to check eligibility and agree a written training plan with you and the employer.
- If direct entry is not possible, compare Level 1, Level 2 and Traineeship options locally.
- Raise disability or other support needs early so adjustments can be arranged.
- Recheck vacancies, course availability, entry criteria and framework details before making a final decision.
Keeping information current
Vacancies, training capacity, course start dates and eligibility rules change. The Department for the Economy’s Construction and the Built Environment careers bulletin page was published on 30 November 2021 and last updated on 9 September 2024; use the bulletin for occupation-level context, but confirm current opportunities with the employer, provider or Careers Service. For the most reliable decision, match a live vacancy with the current advice from the named training contractor and the Northern Ireland framework for your chosen trade.
