How to Find Air Leaks Around Windows, Doors, and Baseboards

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find most visible drafts by inspecting closed windows, door edges and thresholds, baseboard seams, and floor-to-wall joints in cool or windy weather. Confirm a suspected opening with a paper fit check or a carefully controlled smoke test. These methods show clues and air movement, not the size of a leak or the route of a concealed cavity. Once you identify the joint, use weatherstripping on moving parts, caulk on stationary joints, and only window-and-door-rated low-expansion foam, backer rod, or caulk for a confirmed frame-to-rough-opening gap.

What an air-leak check can—and cannot—tell you

Air leaks are unintended paths between conditioned indoor space and the outdoors or an unconditioned cavity. Around a window, the path may be at the sash, the frame, the trim, or the frame-to-rough-opening joint. At a door, it may be the weatherstrip, jamb, threshold, or surrounding frame. At a baseboard, air may be moving through the floor-to-wall junction or from a concealed wall or floor cavity.

A cool surface alone does not identify the cause. It could result from radiant heat loss, a cold exterior wall, or moving air. Use at least two clues—such as a visible gap plus a loose paper test, or a gap plus smoke movement—before treating a location as a likely leak.

DIY checks help you locate suspect areas. They do not measure leakage rate, prove that every hidden path has been found, or reveal where air began traveling behind a wall. A professional blower-door test and infrared imaging are needed when the source is unclear or the problem appears widespread.

Choose conditions and prepare safely

Pick weather that makes air movement noticeable

Cool or windy weather usually provides the strongest contrast between indoors and outdoors. Close all exterior windows and doors before testing. Turn off fans that could change the result unless you are deliberately following the depressurization procedure described below.

Gather simple inspection tools

  • Paper or a thin card for checking the grip of a closed sash or door.
  • A flashlight for illuminating a suspected seam from the opposite side.
  • A pencil, tape, or a phone note for mapping each suspect location.
  • Optional incense or talcum powder for a smoke or movement check.
  • Protective gloves and eye protection when working near damaged trim, insulation, or old coatings.

Control combustion and fire hazards

Smoke testing can depressurize a house and affect combustion appliances. Before using the ENERGY STAR procedure, turn off combustion appliances, close exterior windows and doors, close fireplace flues, and run exhaust fans that vent outdoors. Keep incense, flame, and glowing material away from curtains, paper, solvents, and other combustibles. If you cannot identify every combustion appliance or are unsure how to make the setup safe, stop and arrange a professional assessment instead.

Step-by-step: inspect windows, doors, and baseboards

1. Walk the perimeter and record what you see

Start inside with each closed window and exterior door. Move slowly around the entire perimeter rather than checking only the spot that feels coldest. Note the sash or slab edge, frame, trim, threshold, jambs, and the junction where trim meets wall or floor. At baseboards, inspect both the top edge against the wall and the lower edge against the flooring.

Look for daylight, open joints, cracked or missing sealant, separated trim, damaged weatherstripping, and a threshold that no longer contacts the door. ENERGY STAR lists drafts at a closed unit, visible gaps around trim, pests or dust entering, outside odors, and peeling paint as signs that a window or door area may need attention. These signs identify a place to investigate; none alone establishes the size or route of the leak.

2. Use a flashlight to reveal larger openings

Have a helper stand on the other side of the suspected joint while you shine a flashlight across—not directly into—the seam. Light visible from the opposite side can expose a larger opening around trim or a frame. This method will miss small gaps and cannot test a concealed joint, so treat a negative result as “not visible,” not “airtight.”

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

3. Perform the paper test on movable closures

  1. Place a sheet of ordinary paper across the contact area of a closed window sash or door edge.
  2. Close and latch the window or door over the paper.
  3. Pull gently. If the sheet slides out easily, the closure may not be gripping tightly.
  4. Repeat at several points along the perimeter; a poor fit can be localized to one corner or section.

This is a fit check for the moving closure. It does not test for a gap behind the casing or between a frame and the rough opening. A loose result can point to worn, compressed, or incorrectly sized weatherstripping, but check alignment and latch adjustment before buying material.

4. Use a controlled smoke check to see air movement

Smoke can make a subtle draft visible. With the safety setup complete, hold incense smoke or a small amount of talcum powder near—not inside—a suspected seam. Watch for smoke that wavers, is pulled out of the room, or is blown inward. The official ENERGY STAR wording is: “If the smoke wavers, or is sucked out of or blown into the room, there’s a leak.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test one location at a time and keep the smoke source still so your own hand movement does not create a false signal. Check corners, the lock side of a door, the threshold, window corners, and the joint between trim and wall. A moving plume indicates air movement at that seam; it does not identify the hidden beginning of the air path.

5. Check baseboards and adjoining floor edges

Run your hand along the top and bottom of each baseboard, looking for a visible crack or a noticeable temperature difference. A smoke check may show movement at the seam when performed with the same precautions. DOE’s DIY inspection list includes baseboards, windows, and door frames along with outlets, attic hatches, and service penetrations.

A baseboard draft can be evidence of an open floor-to-wall junction, but it does not prove that the leak starts behind the baseboard. Air may be traveling from a basement, crawlspace, wall cavity, or another connected opening. Do not remove trim solely because a baseboard feels cool; first document the exact seam and check accessible areas on both sides.

6. Map findings before repairing anything

Mark each location as one of four types: moving closure, stationary surface joint, frame-to-rough-opening gap, or uncertain/hidden path. Photograph the condition and note whether the evidence was visual, paper-related, smoke movement, or simply a cool surface. This classification prevents using the wrong sealant and gives a professional useful information if you later request an assessment.

Which detection method should you use?

Method Best location What it shows Limits and skill level
Visual inspection Window and door edges, trim, baseboards, floor joints Visible cracks, daylight, damaged seals, dust, or peeling paint Simple; misses concealed and very small openings
Flashlight check Larger gaps through trim or framing Light passing through an opening Requires a helper; cannot prove a joint is airtight
Paper test Closed window sashes and door edges Whether the moving closure grips the paper Tests fit at the contact seal only, not behind trim
Smoke or talcum check Seams where a draft is suspected Air movement at that point Needs careful depressurization and combustion safety
Blower-door and infrared assessment Whole house and concealed paths Pressure-driven leakage patterns and temperature anomalies Requires trained equipment and interpretation

Combining methods is more useful than repeating one method. For example, a visible crack at a baseboard followed by smoke movement is stronger evidence than a cool-feeling baseboard alone.

Match the repair to the joint

Moving parts: weatherstripping

Use weatherstripping on door slabs, operable window sashes, and other parts that must open and close. The material should compress when latched without preventing the hardware from operating. If the paper test fails at only one section, inspect alignment and the condition of the existing seal before replacing the entire perimeter. ENERGY STAR identifies thicker weatherstripping as one possible correction for a closure that does not grip tightly.

Stationary joints: paintable caulk

Use caulk for a crack between components that do not move relative to one another, such as trim-to-wall, trim-to-floor, or a fixed frame-to-finish joint. Remove loose old sealant, clean and dry the surfaces, apply a continuous bead, tool it to the joint, and allow the product to cure according to its label before painting or washing the area. Caulk cannot compensate for a moving joint; it will crack or obstruct operation.

Frame-to-rough-opening gaps: backer rod, caulk, or window-and-door foam

A confirmed gap between the window or door frame and the rough opening needs a different treatment from a cosmetic trim crack. DOE building-science guidance identifies caulk, foam backer rod, or canned low-expansion foam made specifically for windows and doors. Use only the amount needed to fill the gap and follow the product instructions; high-expansion foam can distort a frame and interfere with operation.

Fibrous insulation by itself does not stop airflow. It may reduce heat transfer after the air path has been sealed, but it is not a substitute for an air seal. If the gap is inaccessible without removing casing, or if framing is wet, damaged, or irregular, have a qualified professional evaluate it first.

Baseboard seams

When testing shows air movement at a baseboard-to-wall or baseboard-to-floor seam and the joint is stationary, a suitable paintable caulk may close that visible path. Seal only after checking for moisture, insect damage, or a larger opening behind the trim. If air continues to move after the exposed seam is sealed, the source may be in the floor or wall assembly and needs further investigation rather than additional surface caulk.

Practical repair sequence for a confirmed leak

  1. Classify the joint. Decide whether it moves, stays stationary, or is a frame-to-rough-opening gap.
  2. Check condition. Do not seal over wet wood, active water intrusion, loose masonry, rotten trim, or a frame that is out of square.
  3. Clean and prepare. Remove loose paint and failed sealant; vacuum dust so the new material can adhere.
  4. Apply the appropriate seal. Install weatherstripping on a moving closure; caulk a stationary crack; or use backer rod, caulk, or window-and-door-rated low-expansion foam at a confirmed rough-opening gap.
  5. Protect operation. Open and close the window or door repeatedly while the sealant remains workable, keeping material out of tracks, hinges, locks, and drainage paths.
  6. Recheck. After the sealant has cured, repeat the paper or smoke check under similar conditions and record whether the symptom changed.

Removing complicated trim is not automatically a DIY task. ENERGY STAR warns that older homes built before 1978 may present lead-paint hazards. If painted casing may contain lead, use lead-safe practices and seek qualified help rather than sanding or disturbing it casually.

When a professional assessment is the better choice

Arrange a home-energy assessment when a simple inspection leaves the source unclear, drafts appear at many locations, or air seems to come from concealed cavities. A professional can use a blower door to create a controlled pressure difference and infrared imaging to identify temperature patterns associated with leakage. These tools can examine the whole building rather than one visible seam.

  • Choose professional help when smoke testing would involve uncertain combustion equipment or cannot be performed safely.
  • Ask for an assessment when sealing one location does not reduce the draft or when several rooms show similar symptoms.
  • Use a professional when trim removal, suspected lead paint, structural damage, moisture, or inaccessible framing is involved.
  • Check with your utility or state energy office for local assessment options; availability varies by location.

Give the assessor your map, photographs, test conditions, and the locations where paper or smoke checks produced a result. That record helps distinguish a local seal failure from a larger pressure or duct problem.

Do not stop at windows and doors

Visible drafts at windows, doors, and baseboards are convenient places to start, but they may not be the largest leakage sites. ENERGY STAR notes that major leaks are often hidden in attics and basements. If your home still feels drafty after visible joints are repaired, inspect accessible attic hatches, basement or crawlspace edges, outlets on exterior walls, and service penetrations—or schedule a whole-house assessment.

Air sealing and insulation together can provide up to 10% savings on annual energy bills, according to ENERGY STAR. That is a potential figure for the combined measures, not a guaranteed saving from one repaired window, door, or baseboard, and the page does not state a publication year. Actual results depend on the home’s condition, climate, energy prices, ventilation, and which leaks are sealed.

Troubleshooting common inspection results

The paper pulls out, but no smoke moves

The paper result indicates weak contact at the moving seal, while the smoke result may have been affected by insufficient pressure, calm weather, or an improperly positioned smoke source. Inspect the gasket, latch, and alignment and repeat the paper test at multiple points. Do not infer that the frame behind the trim is sealed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smoke moves at a baseboard after caulking

Surface caulk may have closed one visible line while air continues through a connected cavity. Check the floor below, the opposite side of the wall, and accessible penetrations. Further sealing may require a professional to locate the pressure path.

A window feels cold but passes the paper test

A tight sash can still have a cold pane, frame, or adjacent wall. Use visual and smoke checks at the stationary frame and trim, and consider that the sensation may be conductive heat loss rather than an air leak.

The draft returns after a repair

Recheck the joint classification, inspect for movement or moisture, and look for a second path nearby. A failed bead, compressed weatherstrip, or frame movement can reopen the original route. If multiple repairs fail, stop adding sealant and obtain a whole-house assessment.

Keep the inspection useful over time

Record the date, weather, rooms checked, evidence observed, and materials used. Recheck moving seals at the start of the heating or cooling season and after a door or window is adjusted. Inspect caulk for cracking or separation and keep tracks, weep holes, thresholds, and drainage paths clear. Maintenance catches a failed seal before it becomes a recurring comfort or moisture problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable DIY approach is systematic: inspect in revealing conditions, verify with more than one clue, classify the joint, and use a seal designed for that joint. Escalate to blower-door and infrared testing when the path is hidden, widespread, or unsafe to investigate yourself.
