The safest detour is the one designated by the agency responsible for the closed bridge, confirmed for your travel mode and checked again just before departure. Identify the exact bridge and road, read the current closure notice and map, verify restrictions and operating hours, then follow the temporary signs on the road. Do not enter a closed bridge or replace an official detour with an unverified shortcut.
A detour can be different for a car, truck, person walking, cyclist, transit rider or emergency vehicle. A route that appears shortest may be unavailable, weight-restricted, inaccessible to your destination or dependent on a ferry schedule. The process below is designed for travelers in the United States who need a current, closure-specific answer rather than a generic navigation estimate.

Start by defining the closure and your trip
Identify the exact bridge
Record the bridge name, the road or highway number, the nearest city, your direction of travel and the expected crossing time. Many communities have several bridges, and a closure notice may apply only to one structure, one approach or particular hours. Search using the road number and place name as well as the bridge name.

State your travel mode
Write down what you are actually operating or riding:
- Passenger car, motorcycle or recreational vehicle
- Commercial truck, bus or an oversize, overweight or hazardous-load vehicle
- Walking or mobility-device travel
- Bicycle or other nonmotorized travel
- Transit, school-bus or paratransit service
- Emergency response
Agencies may publish separate paths for vehicles and pedestrians. A vehicle detour can involve a highway with no safe walking shoulder, while a pedestrian route may use a sidewalk, temporary crossing or local street that is not suitable for a car.
Find the agency’s closure-specific notice
Use the road owner, not only a navigation app
Look first for the state department of transportation, county highway department, city public-works department, toll-road authority or other agency that controls the bridge. Its project or closure page should be the controlling source for dates, hours, designated routes and exceptions. Generic navigation software may know that a road is closed, but it may not know the permitted vehicle class, a temporary weight limit, a ferry schedule or a local-access exception.

Read the most recent update rather than relying on a cached map or an old social-media post.
What to extract from the notice
| Question | Why it affects your route |
|---|---|
| When does the closure begin and end? | A bridge may be open during the day and closed overnight, or closed only during specific work operations. |
| Is the closure complete or limited to a lane, direction or vehicle class? | A “closed” headline may conceal a one-direction restriction or an exception for emergency vehicles. |
| Which map or signed detour is designated? | The map shows the intended connection and prevents a shortcut from being mistaken for an approved route. |
| Does the route fit my mode? | Look for separate vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, transit and commercial-vehicle instructions. |
| Are there weight, height, width, hazardous-material or access restrictions? | A route that works for a car may not legally or physically accommodate a larger vehicle. |
| Are local, business or emergency accesses maintained? | Access to a destination near the bridge may differ from through traffic. |
| Are times, ferry operations or reopening dates tentative? | Weather, construction progress and operating schedules can change the practical route. |
Save the map and notice details
Keep the agency page, map image or PDF available offline if you may lose cellular service. Note the page’s update date, the closure hours, the detour name and any phone number for the project office. A printed copy or written list of key turns is useful when a driver cannot safely handle a phone while moving.

Recheck official traveler information before leaving
Conditions can change after a project page is published. Check the agency’s traveler-information service shortly before departure and again if your trip is long enough for the closure window to change.
Common official channels
- Traveler-information portal: Many state agencies show current incidents, congestion, closures and traffic cameras. Oregon’s Department of Transportation, for example, describes TripCheck as a live information portal.
- 511 telephone service: In Oregon, the 511 phone service supplies the information displayed on the agency’s traveler-information system. Other states use 511 differently, so confirm the service in the state where you are traveling.
- Variable-message signs: Electronic roadside signs may announce a new closure, queue, route change or lane restriction. Treat the message as current traffic-control information and obey it.
- Official project updates: A construction page, agency alert or local government update may revise work hours, ferry arrangements or access rules.
- Roadside personnel and signs: Flaggers and temporary signs can supersede an earlier map when work conditions change.
Do not treat an unofficial post, an old screenshot or a map application’s estimated arrival time as confirmation that the designated detour is open. Use those tools only as supplementary orientation after checking the agency’s current information.

Follow the signs at the closure
Approach the bridge slowly enough to read temporary signs and merge safely. Do not drive, cycle or walk past a barricade or into a signed closed area, even if the bridge appears empty. A closure can involve unstable work areas, active equipment or a route that is unsafe outside the posted opening.
The Federal Highway Administration’s 2023 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices explains that a DETOUR (M4-9) sign is intended for unnumbered highways, emergency situations, short-duration detours or relatively short routes where travelers are guided along the detour and back to the desired highway without route signs. The manual also says the Detour Arrow (M4-10) sign should normally be mounted just below a ROAD CLOSED sign. These signs are traffic-control instructions: follow the arrow and the sequence of temporary signs instead of improvising a different turn.
If a sign conflicts with an old printed map, obey the sign and contact the responsible agency when it is safe to do so. Never stop in a travel lane to study directions; pull into a legal, safe location first.

Compare alternatives using more than distance
Some closure notices list two or more official options. Compare them against the same practical criteria rather than choosing the route with the fewest miles.
| Comparison | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Mode eligibility | Whether cars, trucks, pedestrians, bicycles, transit or emergency vehicles may use it. |
| Added travel time | Whether the estimate is each way, an average or dependent on congestion, weather or a schedule. |
| Added distance | Extra mileage can affect fuel, charging range, delivery times and driver hours. |
| Vehicle restrictions | Weight, height, width, length, hazardous-material and trailer rules. |
| Destination access | Whether the route reaches your side of the river, a local business, a residence or a required stop. |
| Schedule dependencies | Ferry departures, transit service, drawbridge openings or restricted work hours. |
| Road conditions and queues | Current incidents, cameras, weather and congestion on the alternative. |
Do not label one route universally “safest” solely because it is shorter or faster. The suitable route is the one that is authorized for your mode, open for your time of travel, physically compatible with your vehicle and workable for your destination.
Use the route type that matches your mode
Passenger vehicles
Check every turn in the agency map and look for height, weight, width or trailer limits. Confirm that fuel, charging and rest opportunities remain available if the detour adds substantial mileage. If a queue forms before the closure, remain in the signed lane rather than attempting to bypass it on a shoulder or local street.
Commercial and oversized vehicles
Read the notice for truck, bus, hazardous-material and oversize-load restrictions. A general “vehicle detour” may not be legal for your configuration. Verify clearance, posted weight limits, permits and delivery access with the agency or the road owner before departure. If the notice is silent on a necessary restriction, obtain a direct answer instead of assuming ordinary-car access applies.
People walking and bicycling
Look for a separate pedestrian or bicycle map. Check whether the path has a sidewalk, protected crossing, usable shoulder, lighting and access for mobility devices. Do not follow a signed motor-vehicle detour on foot or by bicycle unless the agency explicitly identifies it as suitable for that mode.

Transit riders and operators
Check the transit agency as well as the road owner for stop closures, temporary routes, missed connections and accessibility arrangements. A bridge may be open to emergency vehicles while regular buses use a different path.
Emergency travel
Emergency access can be treated differently from ordinary traffic, but travelers should not infer permission from that exception. If you are responding to an emergency, follow the instructions of the responsible agency and emergency authorities.

- Pinpoint the closure. Write down the bridge, highway or street, community, direction and intended crossing time.
- Choose your mode. Record vehicle type, dimensions or load, or identify walking, cycling, transit or emergency status.
- Locate the controlling agency. Use the state, county, city, toll authority or project owner’s official site.
- Open the current closure notice. Confirm the latest update date, closure hours, reopening status and whether the closure is full, directional or mode-specific.
- Study the official map. Identify the designated detour, every major junction and any maintained local, business or emergency access.
- Check restrictions. Verify weight, height, width, hazardous-material, pedestrian, bicycle and transit conditions.
- Recheck traveler information. Use the jurisdiction’s official portal, 511 service, cameras, variable-message signs or project alerts shortly before leaving.
- Compare listed alternatives. Evaluate time, distance, eligibility, destination access and schedule dependencies.
- Prepare navigation. Enter the confirmed route as a reference, download or print the map and identify a safe place to stop if instructions change.
- Follow temporary traffic control. Obey barricades, detour arrows, flaggers and variable-message signs; never enter the closed facility.
- Reassess safely if conditions change. Pull over before checking a phone, then use the official channel or contact the agency about an unanswered question.
Worked examples from agency closure pages
Astoria-Megler Bridge planning example
Oregon’s U.S. 101 Astoria-Megler Bridge repairs page describes possible nightly full closures during work it was considering for September 2027 through May 2028. The page says emergency vehicles would be able to cross, warns that timing is weather-dependent and may change, and lists two potential alternatives. It is a planning example, not confirmation that those future closures remain scheduled when you travel.
For the highway bridge alternative, the page estimates about 2.5 hours of additional travel each direction and roughly 114 additional miles via the Lewis and Clark Bridge. For the passenger-vehicle ferry option, it estimates about 2 hours each direction and roughly 75 additional miles via the Wahkiakum Ferry. The page says the ferry currently runs hourly from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and lists a $6 one-way fare, but those operating details are volatile and must be checked before departure.

The useful lesson is the comparison method: the ferry is not simply “shorter.” Its availability depends on the sailing schedule, while the highway option adds more time and mileage. A traveler must also confirm that the ferry accepts the intended vehicle and that the listed times apply on the travel date.

Oshkosh Main Street Bridge example
Wisconsin’s US 45/Main Street Bridge project page records a prior Oshkosh closure and provides distinct vehicle and pedestrian detour paths. It also describes maintained local, business and emergency access. The bridge reopened on April 17, 2026, so the page is not a live detour for a current trip; it demonstrates why travelers should look for mode-specific maps and access exceptions in a closure notice.
When the notice leaves a critical question unanswered
Do not fill an information gap with a guess. Contact the agency or use its official traveler-information channel when you need to know:
- Whether a truck, trailer, bus or hazardous load is permitted
- Whether a pedestrian or bicycle route is open and accessible
- Whether a ferry is operating at the time you will arrive
- Whether a local street remains open to a specific address
- Whether a reopening date is confirmed or only an estimate
- Whether weather, flooding, an incident or construction has changed the signed route
Have the bridge name, your mode, vehicle dimensions or load and intended travel time ready when you call. Ask for the designated route, not merely the nearest open road.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon detour mistakes and safer corrections
- Using a generic shortest-route result: Replace it with the agency’s closure map and current signs.
- Assuming one detour fits every traveler: Check the specific vehicle or nonmotorized route.
- Relying on a page without checking its date: Confirm that the closure is still active and that the hours have not changed.
- Ignoring schedule-based options: Verify ferry, transit or other operating hours before committing to that route.
- Entering because the barricade is unattended: A closed facility remains closed even when no worker is visible.
- Stopping in traffic to navigate: Pull over legally before reading a map or calling an agency.
- Assuming emergency or local access is general access: Treat exceptions as limited to the users named in the notice.
Departure checklist
Before you leave, confirm each item:
- The bridge, road, direction and closure hours match your trip.
- The agency notice is current and its reopening language is understood.
- Your travel mode and vehicle dimensions are eligible for the route.
- You have checked restrictions, destination access and any schedule dependency.
- An official traveler-information channel shows no newer incident or change.
- You know where the first detour sign appears and have a safe stopping place.
- You will obey barricades, detour arrows, flaggers and variable-message signs.
If any answer is uncertain, delay departure long enough to obtain an official clarification. A few minutes spent confirming the designated route is safer than discovering a restriction after entering an unsuitable detour.
