Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a highway ramp is closed, do not reverse, cross the median, or enter the blocked ramp. Read the signs, identify the highway direction and destination, check your state or regional 511 and Department of Transportation (DOT) updates, and follow any signed detour. If no detour is posted, continue to the next legal decision point and let navigation recalculate only after you are safely on an open road or stopped legally.
The best alternate route is not always the shortest line on a map. It must be open, legal for your vehicle, able to carry extra traffic, and capable of returning you to the correct side of the highway without creating a new hazard.

What to do in the first minute
- Stay in your lane and slow smoothly. Avoid abrupt braking or a last-second lane change. Work-zone signs, cones, arrow boards, and traffic-control personnel have priority over a navigation app.
- Read the closure message completely. Note whether the exit ramp, entrance ramp, connector, or an entire interchange is closed. Record the highway number, direction of travel, destination named on the sign, and any detour route or next-exit instruction.
- Move toward a legal decision point. If traffic is still moving, take the next open exit or continue to the next interchange. If you need to consult a map, pull into a legal parking area or another safe stopping place first.
- Check live official information. Use the relevant state or regional 511 service and DOT traffic map for the closure cause, expected duration, downstream restrictions, and changing travel times.
- Commit only after screening the route. Confirm that the alternate road can handle your vehicle’s height, weight, length, hazardous-material status, and destination access.
Temporary traffic control exists to guide drivers while responders manage an incident. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) states that its purpose is to provide motorists with warning and guidance on the approach to and around the incident while the affected road remains open to traffic (FHWA, 2017). Treat a uniformed officer, flagger, or posted arrow board as the controlling instruction.

Exit-ramp closure
An exit closure means you are already on the highway and cannot leave at the advertised interchange. Continue on the highway to the next legal exit unless signs direct you to a specific detour. The next exit may place you on the same side of the highway as your destination, or it may require a signed crossover or additional surface-road travel. Do not stop on the shoulder to turn around.

Entrance-ramp closure
An entrance closure affects traffic trying to join the highway. Follow the signed local detour to the next open entrance, and check whether that entrance serves the direction you need. A nearby ramp can be physically open but restricted to a different direction or closed because of the same incident.
Connector or interchange closure
A sign may close only a loop ramp, a flyover, or a connection between two highways. The mainline can remain open while one movement is prohibited. Read the destination panel and arrows rather than assuming the entire interchange is unavailable.
Full roadway or incident closure
If signs or personnel indicate that the highway itself is blocked, do not follow a route that sends you back toward the incident. Use the official detour, obey barricades, and expect traffic to be redirected onto roads that may already be congested.
Use official 511 and DOT information before choosing a route
State and regional 511 services are the best starting point for current closures and restrictions. They combine verified incident reports with construction, weather, lane, and travel-time information. A consumer navigation app can help with turn-by-turn guidance, but it may lag behind a newly placed barricade or fail to understand a vehicle restriction.
North Carolina example
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says its 511 service and DriveNC.gov provide information about crashes, weather-related closures, construction, and other incidents. In North Carolina, check those sources before committing to a long detour and refresh them if the delay grows.

Caltrans describes QuickMap and 511 as real-time traveler-information services. QuickMap includes highway-restriction searches and live cameras, which can help you verify whether an alternate interchange is moving or backed up.
What to record from the update
- The exact ramp or movement that is closed and the highway direction affected.
- Whether the closure is caused by a crash, weather, construction, emergency response, or a scheduled event.
- The latest estimated reopening time, treating it as provisional rather than guaranteed.
- Any posted detour, lane restriction, truck restriction, height limit, weight limit, or hazardous-material prohibition.
- Downstream congestion that could make a nominally short detour slower than continuing to a later interchange.
FHWA’s 23 CFR §511.311 (2023) sets program targets for timely and accurate real-time information: hazardous driving conditions and roadway or lane closures caused by adverse weather should be reported within 20 minutes; roadway-blocking traffic incidents in metropolitan areas should be reported within 10 minutes after verification; and a real-time information program is designed for at least 85 percent accuracy. These are information-program targets, not a promise that every closure will appear instantly or that an estimated reopening time will be correct.
Follow the signed detour and traffic-control personnel
A signed detour has been selected by the road authority to move traffic through a legal sequence of turns. Follow every sign, including temporary yellow arrows, lane-use signs, and instructions from police or flaggers. Maintain a safe speed and avoid distractions; a 2025 Connecticut Department of Transportation ramp-closure advisory specifically told motorists to maintain a safe speed in the area.
Do not substitute a personal shortcut for a signed route while you are inside the work zone. A local-looking street may be closed to through traffic, too narrow for a large vehicle, or reserved for emergency access. If a detour sign appears to conflict with an app, obey the sign and report the discrepancy to the road authority when you can do so safely.
If no detour is posted, reach the next legal decision point
When the closure provides no route, continue forward on the open roadway until you can exit or turn legally. The correct sequence is:

- Exit only where the road is open and the movement is permitted. Do not use a gore area, shoulder, median opening, emergency crossover, or closed ramp as a shortcut.
- Stop in a safe, legal location before entering a destination into navigation or changing the route.
- Check that the recalculated path approaches your destination from an accessible side. A route can reach the correct street while leaving you unable to cross a divided highway or make a permitted turn.
- Follow the new route while watching for temporary signs that appeared after the app’s map data was generated.
Reversing on a ramp, driving against traffic, crossing a median, or moving barricades can cause a head-on collision and may be illegal. If you miss the intended turn, continue to the next legal place to correct it; never make an emergency maneuver to recover a missed exit.

Screen an alternate route before you commit
Washington State Department of Transportation guidance states: “The alternate route must carry the additional traffic volumes and any weight or height restrictions must be considered.” Apply that test even when the detour is only a few miles.
Capacity and congestion
Look for a route with enough lanes, functioning intersections, and storage space for queues. A detour can shift congestion onto the next interchange, a bridge, or residential streets. FHWA planning guidance identifies route distance and capacity as well as emergency-service locations as factors in alternate-route planning. If a camera or 511 map shows a queue already extending through the proposed detour, continue to a later interchange when that option is legal and practical.
Vehicle dimensions and restrictions
- Height: Check posted clearance before choosing a route under a bridge, rail structure, or tunnel.
- Weight: Confirm bridge and roadway weight limits for heavy trucks, trailers, buses, and loaded work vehicles.
- Length and turning space: Tight urban turns, roundabouts, and narrow local streets may not accommodate a long combination vehicle.
- Hazardous materials: Observe hazmat routing, tunnel rules, and restrictions that may not appear in a basic passenger-car app.
- Seasonal or weather limits: Snow, flooding, high winds, or emergency orders can make a route unsuitable even when the pavement is technically open.
Distance and road quality
Compare total travel distance, not just the first few turns. A route with a longer mileage but fewer signalized intersections can be more reliable than a short path through local streets. Check pavement, shoulder width, lighting, and the presence of safe places to stop if weather or fatigue becomes a problem.
Emergency access and services
For a long detour, note fuel, rest, charging, medical, and emergency-service locations. FHWA guidance includes emergency-service locations among the factors for managing alternate routes. Avoid blocking fire lanes or using a shoulder as a staging area while you wait for traffic to clear.

Return to the correct side of the highway
Confirm whether the alternate road reconnects with the highway in your direction. A route that crosses to the opposite side may require a legal turn farther ahead, and a divided road may have no convenient crossing. Read destination signs at each junction instead of assuming that a familiar road leads to the correct carriageway.
Compare the common choices
| Choice | When it is appropriate | Checks before proceeding | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posted detour | The road authority has marked a temporary sequence around the closure. | Follow every sign, arrow, and instruction from traffic-control personnel; confirm the detour serves your direction. | Queues or a changed work zone can make the route slower than when it was signed. |
| Next highway interchange | No detour is posted, or the next signed exit is open and keeps you on a suitable road. | Check downstream congestion, tolls or restrictions where applicable, and whether you can return to the correct side of the highway. | The next interchange may be farther away and may concentrate traffic from the closed ramp. |
| Local-road route | Official information directs traffic to surface streets or the vehicle can legally use them. | Verify width, clearance, weight limits, turning space, emergency access, and neighborhood or event restrictions. | Extra traffic can create bottlenecks on streets not designed for highway volumes. |
| Navigation-generated route | You are safely stopped or moving legally on an open road and no better official route is available. | Compare the app’s path with signs, 511/DOT information, cameras, and vehicle restrictions. | Map data may not reflect a new barricade, temporary restriction, or unsuitable road for your vehicle. |
Use navigation technology as a backup, not the authority
After you reach a safe decision point, enter the destination again so the device can recalculate from your actual position. Reject any suggestion that requires a prohibited turn, a closed ramp, a shoulder, a median crossing, or travel through a signed restriction.
A portable GPS navigation system for a car can provide a second source of route guidance if cellular coverage is weak or a phone battery is low. FHWA’s planned-events handbook identifies dynamic route-guidance technology as a tool for alternate-route management. Keep such a device updated and treat it as a supplement to official 511/DOT information and posted signs, not as permission to ignore them. Carry a charging cable or power source, and set the route before moving rather than handling the screen in traffic.
Recheck conditions during a long detour
Closure schedules and incident conditions can change because of weather, crashes, emergency operations, or work-zone changes. Connecticut DOT’s 2025 advisory illustrates why drivers should refresh information rather than rely on an earlier estimate.
- Refresh the official 511 or DOT source before leaving the safe stopping point.
- Check again before turning onto a route that will take you far from the highway.
- Watch for new barricades, police directions, queue warnings, and weather advisories.
- If the detour becomes blocked, continue to the next legal decision point instead of improvising a prohibited maneuver.
- For commercial or oversized vehicles, verify restrictions with the responsible road authority before entering a secondary road.
Special cases that need extra care
Traffic is stopped before the ramp
Keep an emergency corridor where local rules and traffic-control directions require one. Do not use the shoulder to bypass the queue unless an authorized official directs you. Sudden lane changes near a blocked ramp expose you to merging traffic and responders.

You are towing or driving a large vehicle
Assume that a route suitable for a passenger car may not suit your rig. Measure the vehicle’s actual height and length, account for cargo, and verify bridge, roadway, turning, and hazmat restrictions before selecting a local detour.
Severe weather is involved
Prioritize road condition and shelter over mileage. Floodwater, ice, wind, and fallen debris can close the alternate route after the original ramp was shut. Use official weather and road reports and avoid stopping under bridges or in low-lying areas where water can rise.
You are approaching an emergency scene
Slow down, follow responder instructions, and avoid photographing or manipulating a device. Incident scenes can move as recovery vehicles arrive; the first set of cones may not be the final traffic pattern.

Change plans if official information reports a new closure, the route cannot legally accommodate your vehicle, traffic-control personnel redirect you, or congestion makes the route unsafe. Pull over legally before comparing options. A later interchange is usually preferable to forcing a turn through a local bottleneck, but only if signs and current official information show that it is open and suitable.
Once you have passed the incident and rejoined the correct highway direction, verify the next planned exit rather than assuming the original ramp has reopened. Keep following temporary signs until they are removed or the road authority confirms normal traffic patterns.
