Check the tool, battery, and charger labels, then confirm the combination in the manufacturer’s manual or compatibility chart before buying. Without those identifiers, no specific replacement can be confirmed.
Identify the tool, battery, and charger
- Read the tool’s nameplate. Record the brand, exact model number, and any country or region marking.
- Read the battery label. Copy its model number, voltage, and chemistry if shown. A photo of the pack and connector can help identify it, but a visual match does not prove compatibility.
- Read the charger label. Record its model number and input/output information. For help locating DEWALT model numbers on batteries and chargers, see the manufacturer’s model-number and date-code guide.
These identifiers matter because a manufacturer may use several distinct battery systems, even across tools with similar names. Makita, for example, distinguishes its CXT, LXT, and XGT platforms and says batteries are compatible within their respective platforms; see its U.S. service FAQ.
Confirm the exact battery-platform match
Use the tool maker’s documentation to verify that the battery is listed for your screw gun and that the charger is listed for that battery. Voltage alone is not enough: STANLEY documents separate original FATMAX 18V and V20 ranges and says their batteries are not interchangeable (STANLEY compatibility guidance, updated December 4, 2025).
Look in the manual, official parts catalog, or compatibility chart for the exact model numbers. Check the charger’s regional mains-input requirements as well as its battery compatibility. Do not choose a pack or charger based only on price, capacity, voltage, connector appearance, or a seller’s claim that an adapter will make it fit.

What to do if the original battery is discontinued
Search the manufacturer’s parts channel or contact its support or an authorized service provider with the tool, battery, and charger model numbers. Ask whether a documented replacement pack, compatible charger, or service option exists. Availability can differ by product age and region.
Some manufacturers provide specific guidance for older products. Dremel publishes an older-model compatibility chart and says legacy batteries are not currently available on its main site; it directs customers to check its parts site or contact support. That guidance is specific to Dremel and does not establish availability for another brand.

Buy and charge only a documented pairing
Buy only after the tool maker’s documentation or support channel confirms the battery and charger pairing. Follow the instructions for that product family, and do not modify a battery pack to fit a charger. A DEWALT manual, for example, warns against modifying a pack to fit a non-compatible charger and directs users to the product family’s compatibility chart; consult the DCD446 and DCD447 manual for those models. It is not a universal manual for every screw gun.
