A snake plant can thrive with little or no fertilizer. If yours is actively growing, feed lightly in spring and summer with cactus-and-succulent fertilizer according to its label, or dilute general-purpose fertilizer to one-quarter to one-half of the label rate. Skip feeding when growth stops in winter.
When to fertilize a snake plant
Use growth, not a fixed calendar, as your guide. Feed during active growth, usually in spring and summer; do not fertilize in winter if the plant is not growing. Indoor conditions vary, so a plant that is still actively growing may not follow a precise seasonal cutoff.
For water-soluble fertilizer, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach suggests feeding succulents every three to four waterings during active growth. Its guidance also allows slow-release fertilizer early in the season. These are options, not a requirement to feed on a strict schedule: keep applications occasional and follow the product label. Iowa State’s succulent-care guidance was last reviewed in December 2024.
Which fertilizer to use
| Fertilizer option | How to use it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Cactus-and-succulent fertilizer | Follow the package directions during active growth. | A straightforward choice if you want a product labeled for succulents. |
| General-purpose water-soluble fertilizer | Dilute to one-quarter to one-half of the label rate for succulents, as Iowa State recommends. | A practical option if you already have general-purpose fertilizer. |
| Compost or vermicompost | UC Cooperative Extension notes that a little can suffice; it does not specify an amount. | A low-input alternative to liquid houseplant food. |
No particular brand or snake-plant-specific NPK ratio is established in the cited guidance, and there is no evidence here that one fertilizer category works better than another for snake plants. UC Cooperative Extension describes the plant’s fertilizer needs as minimal and presents houseplant food in spring or summer as optional. Its article, “Snake Plant!”, was published December 6, 2019.

- Choose cactus-and-succulent fertilizer and follow its package directions, or dilute general-purpose water-soluble fertilizer to one-quarter to one-half strength.
- Apply occasionally during active growth, using the product’s directions as your guide. For water-soluble fertilizer, Iowa State’s general succulent guidance is every three to four waterings.
- Stop feeding when the plant is not growing, including during winter dormancy or inactivity.
Check watering and drainage before feeding
Fertilizer cannot fix problems caused by poor drainage or overwatering. North Carolina State University Extension recommends well-drained soil and careful watering, and warns that overwatering can cause root rot. If the plant is struggling, address those basics before adding fertilizer. The plant is commonly known by its former scientific name, Sansevieria trifasciata; North Carolina State University Extension lists it as Dracaena trifasciata. North Carolina State’s plant profile covers its growing conditions.
