For a Google Home Mini (1st gen), the factory reset is performed with a small physical button on the underside of the speaker. Keep it plugged in, press and hold the etched-circle button below the power cable, and continue holding until the confirmation sound. The reset permanently clears the speaker’s data.
To factory-reset a Google Home Mini (1st gen), leave it plugged in, turn it over, and press and hold the small button marked by an etched circle on the underside, directly below the power-cable area. The reset starts after about five seconds. Keep holding for approximately 10 more seconds, until the speaker plays its reset-confirmation sound.
A factory reset permanently erases the speaker’s device data and restores its factory settings. It cannot be undone, and Google does not support starting this reset by voice command or from the Google Home app.

Before you reset: confirm which speaker you have
The reset button described above is for the Google Home Mini (1st gen). It is easy to confuse this speaker with the Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), which uses a different reset procedure.
- Home Mini (1st gen): has a small reset button on the bottom, below the power cable.
- Nest Mini (2nd gen): has a wall-mount screw slot on the back and is reset by switching off the microphone, then pressing and holding the center of the speaker where the lights are located.
If your speaker does not have a rear wall-mount screw slot, that is a useful indication that it is the first-generation Home Mini. Do not use the Nest Mini’s center-touch procedure on a first-generation Home Mini.
How to factory-reset a Google Home Mini (1st gen)
- Keep the speaker plugged in. It must be powered on because the reset is performed using the physical control on the device.
- Turn the speaker upside down. Look on the underside near the power-cable connection.
- Find the reset button. It is the small button identified by an etched circle directly below the power-cable area.
- Press and hold the button. After approximately five seconds, the reset process begins.
- Continue holding the button. Hold it for about 10 additional seconds, or until the speaker plays its confirmation sound. Google’s related touch-control guidance describes the complete hold as approximately 12 seconds, so the sound is a better indication than an exact stopwatch time.
- Release the button after the confirmation. The speaker will return to its factory state.
- Set it up again. Previous configuration will need to be recreated because the reset clears the device’s data and disconnects it from the home’s members.
What the factory reset removes
The reset returns the Home Mini to its default factory condition. It clears data stored on the device and disconnects it from the home and its members. You will need to configure the speaker again after the reset.

This is an irreversible action. If the speaker has only stopped responding temporarily, try rebooting it or following ordinary troubleshooting steps first. A reboot does not serve the same purpose as a factory reset: it may correct a temporary problem without erasing the configuration.

The physical microphone switch is on the speaker, but it is not the factory-reset control on a first-generation Home Mini. When the microphone is switched off, the speaker shows orange lights and Google Assistant cannot listen or interact. That muted state does not reset the device.
For the first-generation model, use the small etched-circle button on the underside below the power cable. The microphone-off-then-center procedure belongs to the second-generation Nest Mini.

If the reset does not work
1. Check the model
Make sure you are working with a Home Mini (1st gen), not a Nest Mini (2nd gen). Check for the underside reset button and look for the presence or absence of the wall-mount screw slot on the back.
2. Check the button location
Do not press the microphone switch or the top of the fabric-covered speaker. The first-generation reset control is underneath the unit, below the power-cable area, and is marked by a small etched circle.

3. Confirm that the speaker is powered
Keep the speaker connected to power while performing the reset. If it is not powering on at all, a reset may not be possible until the power problem is resolved.

4. Hold the button long enough
Releasing the button at the first prompt can interrupt the process. Continue holding past the approximately five-second starting point until the speaker provides its reset-confirmation sound.
5. Try troubleshooting before repeating an irreversible reset
If the problem seems temporary, reboot or troubleshoot the speaker before trying the factory reset again. Google’s public guidance does not establish a universal alternate button sequence or an electrical repair procedure for a reset that fails. Do not assume that a generic replacement adapter is safe or compatible without verifying its electrical and connector requirements for this specific device.

A reset is not a purchase requirement. However, if the unit is physically defective, cannot remain powered, or was lost or damaged, compare the exact Google Home Mini (1st Gen) model before buying a replacement. Do not assume that instructions, accessories, or parts for the Nest Mini (2nd gen) are interchangeable with the first-generation Home Mini.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I factory-reset a Google Home Mini from the Google Home app?
No. A first-generation Google Home Mini cannot be factory-reset by voice command or through the Google Home app. Use the physical reset button underneath the speaker.
Is the microphone switch the reset button?
The microphone switch only turns listening off; it does not reset a first-generation Home Mini. Orange lights indicate that the microphone is muted. The reset button is underneath the speaker below the power cable.
How do I tell a Home Mini from a Nest Mini before resetting it?
The first-generation Home Mini uses the small button on the underside below the power cable. The second-generation Nest Mini uses a different method: switch off the microphone, then press and hold the center of the speaker.
The Bottom Line
On a first-generation Google Home Mini, the factory-reset control is the small etched-circle button on the underside below the power cable—not the microphone switch or the top of the speaker. Hold it until the reset confirmation sound. The process permanently erases the device’s data, so reboot or troubleshoot first if a full reset is not necessary.
