To enable HDMI ARC on a Samsung TV, connect your soundbar or receiver to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, turn on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC), select the HDMI audio device under Sound Output, and set the soundbar to its TV-ARC input. Samsung TVs often do not have a separate “ARC On” switch.
With the correct setup, one HDMI cable carries audio from built-in TV apps, broadcasts, and connected sources to your soundbar or AV receiver while allowing compatible volume control from the Samsung remote.

Before you begin
- Confirm that the Samsung TV has an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. Some One Connect Boxes have the ARC/eARC port rather than the television chassis.
- Confirm that the soundbar or receiver has an HDMI port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC), HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC), or an equivalent output. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input on the soundbar.
- Use a functioning HDMI cable. For eARC, use a suitable certified HDMI cable; an expensive cable is not automatically necessary for basic ARC.
- Power on both devices before configuring them.
ARC works only when both connected devices support ARC. eARC requires eARC support on both the TV and the receiving audio device. The TV, audio device, cable, and source format together determine the available audio quality.
See the HDMI.org eARC overview for the technology and cable requirements.

ARC and eARC: what is the difference?
Audio Return Channel (ARC) sends sound from the TV back to a soundbar or AV receiver through the same HDMI cable used for the ARC connection. It is useful for Samsung’s built-in streaming apps, over-the-air broadcasts, and devices whose audio passes through the TV.
Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) performs the same basic job with greater bandwidth and improved support for higher-quality audio formats. It can be useful for compatible Dolby Atmos and other high-bandwidth formats, but enabling eARC cannot upgrade an ARC-only TV or soundbar. The least capable component limits the result.
| Feature | ARC | eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Sends TV audio to external equipment | Sends TV audio with higher available bandwidth |
| Required hardware | ARC-capable TV and soundbar or receiver | eARC-capable TV and soundbar or receiver |
| Samsung setup | Anynet+ and Sound Output | Anynet+, Sound Output, and HDMI eARC Mode when available |
| Audio capability | Generally suitable for standard and compressed formats | Better suited to supported high-bandwidth formats |
How to enable HDMI ARC on a Samsung TV
1. Connect the correct HDMI ports
Connect:
TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar or receiver HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC)

2. Turn on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)
On many newer Samsung TVs, open:
Home → Settings → All Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → On
Anynet+ is Samsung’s name for HDMI-CEC, the communication system that helps the TV discover compatible devices and pass volume commands to them. ARC detection and remote volume control may fail when it is disabled.
Samsung’s current instructions are available in its eARC and soundbar support guide.

3. Set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto, if supported
If both the TV and soundbar or receiver support eARC, open:
Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI eARC Mode → Auto
The eARC option may be missing on an ARC-only TV. That is not necessarily a fault; the setting is model-dependent. Do not expect eARC operation when either device supports only ARC.
4. Select the HDMI audio output
Open:
Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output

5. Select the soundbar’s TV-ARC input
On many Samsung soundbars, select D.IN. After the HDMI connection is recognized, the display may change to TV ARC or TV eARC. Other brands may call the input HDMI ARC, TV Audio, or HDMI-CEC.
A correctly configured TV can still produce no sound if the soundbar remains on Bluetooth, an ordinary HDMI input, or another source.

- The Samsung remote changes the external device’s volume.
Menu paths on older Samsung TVs
Samsung menu names vary by series, region, and software version. Look for equivalent labels if your television does not match these paths.
| Samsung series or period | Relevant menu path |
|---|---|
| 2017 and newer families listed by Samsung | Home → Settings → Sound → Sound Output → Receiver (HDMI) |
| 2016 K series | Home → Settings → Sound → Speaker Settings → Receiver (HDMI) |
| 2015 J series | Menu → Sound → Speaker List |
| 2013–2014 F/H series | Menu → Sound → Speaker Settings → Receiver |
| 2011–2012 D/E series | Menu → System → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → Receiver On |
Samsung’s ARC support guide documents these series-specific differences.
Choose the right digital audio format
For initial setup, use:
Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → Digital Output Audio Format → Auto
Auto is the safest starting point because the TV selects a format compatible with the connected equipment. If the receiver supports the source format and you specifically want the original signal, you can test Pass-Through. If you get silence, dropouts, or compatibility problems, return to Auto or temporarily select PCM as a diagnostic step.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
These settings are not interchangeable guarantees of better sound. Pass-Through can preserve an original signal only when the complete system supports it, while PCM can help identify an unsupported-format problem. Samsung’s service guidance covers D.IN, Auto, Pass-Through, and ARC troubleshooting.
HDMI ARC troubleshooting
The soundbar is not detected
- Verify that the cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Verify that the other end is connected to the soundbar’s or receiver’s HDMI OUT ARC/eARC port.
- Turn on Anynet+.
- Confirm that the soundbar is powered on.
- Set the soundbar to D.IN, TV ARC, or TV eARC.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily.
- Turn off both the TV and soundbar, unplug them briefly, then reconnect and power them on.
- Try another known-good compatible HDMI cable.
- Check for TV and soundbar firmware updates.
- Confirm that both devices actually support ARC or eARC.
Other HDMI devices can interfere with device discovery and HDMI-CEC handshakes. Samsung recommends removing external devices during ARC troubleshooting, then reconnecting them one at a time.

Note: High refresh rate requires devices to support HDMI 2.1 standard. Meanwhile, please manually adjust the resolution and refresh rate of the device in advance.
The soundbar is detected but there is no sound
- Set Sound Output to the soundbar or Receiver (HDMI).
- Set the soundbar to D.IN, TV ARC, or TV eARC.
- Check that the soundbar is not muted.
- Confirm that Anynet+ is enabled.
- Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto.
- Try PCM temporarily to isolate an audio-format compatibility issue.
- Check the app or connected source for its own audio-output setting.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices and retest a built-in TV app.
- Restart both devices.
Sound cuts out intermittently
Intermittent audio commonly points to a marginal cable, an HDMI-CEC handshake problem, an unsupported audio format, firmware incompatibility, conflicting HDMI equipment, or a long or poorly shielded cable run.
- Change Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or PCM.
- Replace the HDMI cable.
- Disconnect every other HDMI device.
- Power-cycle the TV and soundbar.
- Reconnect only the soundbar and test a built-in app.
- Reconnect external sources individually.
Some Samsung models include an HDMI diagnostic path at Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Signal Information → Signal History → HDMI Delay Level. This option is model-dependent and may not appear on every TV.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Dolby Atmos does not work
Atmos is not guaranteed merely because the TV has ARC or eARC. The TV, soundbar or receiver, HDMI connection, cable, source device, app, content audio track, and selected output format must all support the relevant Atmos format.
ARC-only systems may support fewer formats than eARC systems. Do not assume that an ARC connection provides lossless Atmos, and do not assume that every streaming app sends Atmos through the TV. Verify the specifications of each component and test with content known to include the format.
The Samsung remote does not control volume
- Enable Anynet+ on the TV.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the soundbar or receiver if it has a separate control.
- Confirm that the devices are connected through ARC/eARC rather than optical or Bluetooth.
- Set the soundbar to its TV ARC/eARC input.
- Try a different functioning HDMI cable if audio works but control does not.
ARC carries audio, while HDMI-CEC provides much of the device communication used for discovery and remote control. Both need to work for the smoothest setup.
The eARC option is missing
A missing HDMI eARC Mode setting may simply mean that the TV supports conventional ARC only. Check the exact TV model and the soundbar or receiver specifications. An ARC-only television cannot be converted to eARC through a menu setting or cable.
ARC compared with optical, Bluetooth, and direct HDMI
| Connection | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | One cable, integrated TV audio, and compatible HDMI-CEC volume control | Can be affected by port, cable, format, and HDMI handshake problems |
| Optical | Often simple and useful with older equipment | No HDMI-CEC volume/control path and more limited format capability |
| Bluetooth | No HDMI cable | Potential synchronization, control, and format limitations |
| Source connected directly to soundbar | May support a format the TV cannot pass through | The soundbar must pass through the source’s resolution, HDR, refresh rate, and gaming features |
Optical is a practical fallback when ARC fails or one device lacks HDMI ARC. It is not a replacement for eARC features. Bluetooth is convenient but is generally less suitable for a home-theater setup.

Frequently asked questions
Does every Samsung TV have HDMI ARC?
No. ARC and eARC support depends on the model. Check the HDMI labels and the television’s specifications.
Can I use a non-Samsung soundbar?
Yes. A third-party soundbar or receiver can work when the TV and audio device support compatible ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC behavior.
Why does my Samsung soundbar say D.IN?
D.IN is the soundbar’s digital input mode. Select it during setup; after detection, many Samsung soundbars change the display to TV ARC or TV eARC.
Do I need a special HDMI ARC cable?
You need a functioning HDMI cable suitable for the connection. For eARC, choose an appropriate certified cable. Do not buy an expensive premium cable before checking the ports, Anynet+, Sound Output, and soundbar input.
Why did ARC stop working after I added a streaming box or console?
The additional device may have disrupted HDMI-CEC discovery or the audio handshake. Disconnect other HDMI devices, power-cycle the TV and soundbar, confirm ARC operation with only those two devices connected, and reconnect the sources one at a time.
Is Q-Symphony required for HDMI ARC?
No. Q-Symphony is a separate Samsung feature for synchronizing compatible Samsung TV and soundbar speakers. Basic ARC operation does not require it.
When should I use an AV receiver instead of a soundbar?
An AV receiver may be preferable when you need multiple HDMI inputs, more speaker flexibility, or broader format support. It also adds setup complexity and may require separate speakers.
