Drive a construction detour as a changing traffic pattern, not as an ordinary shortcut. Before you reach the closure, allow extra time and choose an alternate route if practical. At the work zone, read temporary signs early, obey the posted work-zone speed and every flagger instruction, leave a larger gap, and stay on the signed detour until signs direct you back. Merge early when traffic is light and moving relatively fast; use a zipper merge when congestion has slowed traffic and gaps have closed. Current signs, lane markings, flaggers and local law control at the site.
Before you leave: plan for the closure
A detour can add time even when the distance looks short. Leave earlier than usual, especially during a commute, school run, appointment or delivery window. A queue may form well before the physical work area, and a lane that was open yesterday may be shifted or closed today.

Choose a route before reaching the diversion
Look for official project or traffic information before driving. Changeable message signs may report a closure, queue, hazard, expected delay, travel time or alternate route. If an alternate road avoids the diversion, decide whether it is suitable before you arrive at the decision point. The available federal guidance does not establish a universal fastest route or a route-specific travel time; conditions, turning restrictions and local traffic can change the answer.
Set navigation instructions while parked or before departure. Do not handle a phone while moving. If you need to change the route, pull into a legal, safe stopping place first. A passenger can manage directions only if doing so does not distract the driver.

Expect conditions to change
Work zones are planned around active construction, traffic volumes and available space. Lane shifts, alternating one-way movements and closures can change, sometimes from one day to the next. A familiar route is not a reason to rely on memory. Treat each approach as new and be prepared to slow down.
Recognize the work-zone approach
Temporary signs, cones, barrels, barricades, arrow boards, work vehicles and workers usually provide advance warning. Temporary signs are commonly orange in U.S. work zones, but color alone is not permission to continue at the normal pace. Read the full message and look for the next instruction rather than reacting at the last second.
Read signs in sequence
An advance warning may announce road work, a lane reduction, a shifted alignment, a detour or a flagger ahead. Later signs give the action: move to a specified lane, turn at an intersection, stop, or proceed when directed. Keep scanning after the first sign; a later sign or lane marking may change the movement.

A lane that appears to continue may actually shift across the roadway. Do not drive through a closed lane, around a barricade or onto a shoulder unless the active control specifically directs that movement.
Obey the person controlling traffic
A flagger’s instructions apply to the traffic stream being controlled. Stop at the location indicated, remain stopped until the flagger signals you to proceed, and watch for a second flagger or an approaching vehicle in an alternating operation. If a flagger, sign and lane marking appear inconsistent, stop if you can do so safely and follow the active direction given at the site rather than guessing.

Which speed limit applies?
Use the speed shown by the current work-zone sign. NHTSA states: "If there are no reduced speed limit signs, you should obey the normal posted speed limit." A reduced limit applies where it is posted, even if workers are not visible at that moment. The end of a reduced limit or work-zone control must be indicated before you return to a higher posted limit.
Why a lower limit may be posted
Work-zone speed limits are part of the traffic-control plan. FHWA identifies factors such as the pre-work-zone speed, where workers are located in relation to traffic, the type of traffic control and the complexity of the work area. A lower limit gives drivers more time to respond to narrowed lanes, equipment, workers, stopped vehicles and abrupt alignment changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAdjust for conditions without inventing a new limit
The posted limit is a maximum, not a target that must be maintained in every condition. Reduce speed further when visibility, rain, glare, debris, a sharp shift or a queue requires it, while avoiding sudden braking that could surprise the vehicle behind you. Never accelerate simply because a work crew is out of sight; the hazard may be a lane transition or stopped traffic farther ahead.
Follow the detour from the first turn to the return
A signed detour is a route, not just one turn. FHWA describes detour signs as directing motorists onto the alternate roadway, through the detour and back to the road from which they were diverted.
At the diversion point
Position early for the lane or turn shown by the sign. Signal before moving, check mirrors and blind spots, and yield as required. Do not cross a solid temporary line or force a gap to avoid missing the turn. If you miss the movement, continue to a safe place where you can legally reorient; do not reverse, make a sudden U-turn or drive against the signed pattern.

While on the detour
Keep looking for the next detour confirmation sign. A route may use several intersections, temporary signals or alternating traffic sections. Stay on the signed path instead of improvising a shorter route through a residential street, business entrance, shoulder or work area. Unfamiliar turns can expose you to pedestrians, cyclists, narrow lanes or vehicles entering from side roads.
At the end of the detour
Continue following detour signs until one directs you back to the original route or the work-zone control clearly ends. Do not assume that the first open-looking roadway is the correct return. Check the lane arrangement after the merge because the original road may have a temporary alignment or a different number of lanes.
Decide when to merge
There is no single merge method that is safest in every work zone. NHTSA distinguishes between traffic that is still moving relatively fast and traffic that has slowed into congestion. Use the site’s signs, lane markings and flagger directions first; the traffic condition determines which general approach fits when the site allows a choice.
| Traffic condition | Preferred general approach | How to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Light traffic with vehicles still moving relatively fast | Merge early | Move into the continuing lane when a safe gap is available, signal, match the flow and avoid a last-second lane change at the taper. |
| Heavy congestion, slow speeds and closed gaps | Zipper merge | Use both lanes up to the designated merge area, maintain a steady slow pace, then alternate one vehicle from each lane where the lanes combine. |
Early merging in moving traffic
When traffic is light and moving at a relatively high speed, merging early reduces the chance that a vehicle will reach the taper without a gap. Signal, check the adjacent lane and merge without forcing another driver to brake. Once in the through lane, leave room for vehicles ahead to slow.
Zipper merging in a queue
When traffic is already slow and gaps have closed, moving every vehicle into one lane far upstream can leave unused pavement and create competing lane changes. If signs permit both lanes to continue, remain in your lane at a steady speed and take turns at the merge point. A driver in the continuing lane should make space for the alternating vehicle; the entering driver should not accelerate past the queue or push into a gap that is too small.

When the site specifies a method
A posted merge instruction, arrow board, temporary signal or flagger can require a different movement. Follow that control even if it differs from the general traffic-based guidance. Emergency vehicles, buses, bicycles and pedestrians may also change how the lane is used; yield whenever the law or traffic control requires.
Leave space for sudden braking
Rear-end collisions are a particular work-zone risk because queues can stop quickly. An FHWA fact sheet reported that 25 percent of fatal work-zone crashes involved rear-end collisions in 2017. That is a statistic for that year, not a current annual rate or a measure of every work-zone crash.
Build a larger following gap
Increase the distance behind the vehicle ahead, especially near a lane taper, a flagger, a temporary signal, a hill or a curve that hides the queue. Use the extra space to see several vehicles ahead and to brake progressively rather than at the last instant. If another driver merges into the gap, ease off and rebuild the distance; do not retaliate by tailgating.
Respond to a stopped queue
- Scan well ahead for brake lights, a blocked lane or a flagger’s stop signal.
- Release the accelerator early and brake smoothly while keeping the vehicle centered in the open lane.
- Check mirrors for following traffic and leave an escape space where the roadway and controls allow it.
- Stop behind the vehicle ahead with enough room to see its rear tires touching the pavement, unless the site requires a different stopping position.
- Remain stopped until traffic control or the queue moves; do not enter a closed lane or shoulder to bypass the line.
Keep attention on driving
FHWA advises keeping eyes on the road and off the phone. Do not text, select a destination, photograph the work or use a handheld device while moving. Work zones demand frequent visual checks for signs, workers, equipment and lane edges, so even a short glance away can remove the time needed to react.

A temporary lane may be narrower than the permanent lane and may run close to barriers or equipment. Keep both hands available, hold a steady line and avoid drifting toward cones or barrels. Large vehicles may need more room to turn or may block your view of the next sign; increase distance rather than passing aggressively.

Alternating one-way traffic
In a single-lane section, a flagger or temporary signal determines which direction moves. Stop before the marked limit line or at the flagger’s location, and do not enter until the opposing stream has cleared and you receive permission. Once released, proceed at the posted work-zone speed because the open lane may still contain workers, equipment or a sharp exit transition.
Night, rain and reduced visibility
Darkness, glare and wet pavement make cones, workers and lane edges harder to see. Slow to a speed that preserves stopping distance, use headlights as required by local law, and avoid high beams when they would impair another driver or reflect from rain and signs. Expect that a work area can remain hazardous after workers leave because barriers, uneven pavement and changed lanes may stay in place overnight.
If you miss a sign or become uncertain
Do not make a sudden correction. Continue at a controlled speed, signal, and look for the next legal place to receive direction. If the route is unclear, stop only where permitted and safe, such as a parking area or other location outside the travel lane. Recheck the official detour information while stopped, then re-enter traffic carefully.
Never follow an unofficial hand signal from another motorist when it conflicts with a sign, signal or flagger. Do not move a cone, barricade or sign. Those devices define the temporary roadway and may protect workers or a hidden drop-off.
What current federal rules mean for drivers
FHWA’s 2024 Work Zone Safety and Mobility and Temporary Traffic Control Devices rules took effect on December 2, 2024. They describe requirements for agencies and projects, particularly federal-aid highway work; they do not replace the instructions displayed at a particular location. Drivers still must follow the active signs, markings, flaggers and state or local law.
States and municipalities can use different wording, speed limits, signal arrangements and enforcement practices. A general federal explanation cannot resolve conflicting controls at one site. When controls change, comply with the one currently governing your lane and proceed only when the movement is clearly allowed.
A practical sequence for the complete trip
- Before departure: allow extra time, review official closure information and choose whether an alternate route is appropriate.
- Before the approach: put away the phone, reduce distractions and watch for advance warnings, queues and lane changes.
- At the first control: read the temporary instruction, adopt the posted work-zone speed and follow any flagger or signal.
- At a lane reduction: select the merge approach that matches traffic speed and congestion, unless the site specifies another method.
- Through the detour: maintain a generous gap, scan beyond the vehicle ahead and follow each confirmation sign.
- At the return: stay on the detour until the signed route rejoins the original road, then adapt to the temporary alignment before resuming normal travel.
Common mistakes that create danger
- Waiting until the taper to read a sign or attempt a lane change.
- Using the normal speed because workers are not visible, despite a posted reduced limit.
- Passing a queue on the shoulder, through a closed lane or around a barricade.
- Stopping in a travel lane to program navigation or turning around after a missed detour.
- Assuming an early merge is always better, even when traffic is already slow and the site supports alternating merges.
- Following a vehicle ahead so closely that its brake lights are the first warning of a stopped queue.
- Looking at a phone, camera or map while the vehicle is moving.
- Leaving the signed detour because an unsignposted side street appears shorter.
When an alternate route is better than the signed detour
An alternate route can make sense when you can select it before the diversion and current official information shows the signed detour is heavily delayed or unsuitable for your vehicle. Compare the roads you can legally and safely use, including width, turning space, weight restrictions and access for pedestrians or cyclists. The federal guidance does not provide a universal recommendation or guaranteed travel time for one route. Once you have entered the controlled work zone, however, do not improvise a departure through the work area; follow the active detour controls to a legal decision point.
