Use the bridge owner’s current instructions, not your own judgment about whether the structure looks safe. If the bridge is closed, do not enter or move barriers; take the signed detour. If it is open under restrictions, obey every posted speed, lane, signal, flagger, vehicle and load control, and do not stop on the bridge. Check the responsible transportation agency’s latest advisory before leaving because a repair status can change.
What a repair status actually tells you
A bridge under repair can be closed completely or opened with controls that limit how traffic uses it. Permission for some traffic to pass does not mean the bridge is operating normally or is safe for unrestricted use. The bridge owner and road authority decide whether to close the facility, restrict lanes or loads, install temporary support, repair the damage or replace the bridge.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) explains that a critical bridge finding requires a public-safety action. That action can include closure, lane or load restrictions, shoring, repair or replacement. Its National Bridge Inspection Standards Q&A states: “Increased inspection intervals alone do not fully address a critical finding if the safety issue is not rectified.” Read the FHWA guidance at National Bridge Inspection Standards: Q&A on inspection and load posting.

Check the bridge owner’s latest notice
Repair work, emergency restrictions and planned closures can change. Look for the latest notice from the state department of transportation, county, municipality or other agency responsible for that road. Confirm the bridge name or route, the direction of travel, the date and time the notice applies, and whether the notice describes a full closure, alternating traffic, a lane restriction or a vehicle/load restriction.

The agency’s notice is more authoritative than an older map, a previous news report or a driver’s recollection. FHWA’s bridge-inspection information is available at Questions and Answers on the National Bridge Inspection Standards; local agencies publish the operating instructions for individual crossings.
Confirm that your vehicle is permitted
Read every posted vehicle, weight, axle or load restriction that applies to your vehicle. A bridge may be open to ordinary traffic while excluding a heavier vehicle or a particular load. The information supplied for this article cannot determine whether any specific truck, trailer, bus, recreational vehicle or oversize load meets a bridge’s limit. If the restriction is unclear, do not guess; choose another route or contact the road authority before entering.
Have a fallback route
Allow time for the signed detour or a last-minute closure. Do not plan to “check the bridge when you get there” if the agency has already announced a closure or restriction. A driver who reaches a closure without a workable alternative is more likely to make an unsafe decision, such as turning around in a controlled area or driving around a barrier.
If the bridge is closed: follow the detour, not the gap
- Stop before the closure point. Stay outside barriers, gates, cones and other devices that block the approach.
- Do not drive around, move or cross a barrier. A gap in a barricade is not permission to enter; closure controls remain in force until the responsible agency changes them.
- Follow the signed official detour. Emergency-repair arrangements can include a facility closure, a detour or reduced lanes, as described in FHWA’s emergency relief repair guidance.
- Keep following the detour signs at each decision point. Do not substitute an informal route that sends you toward another closed approach.
- Ask the road authority if the status is unclear. If signs conflict, are missing or do not identify where the detour continues, stop in a lawful location away from the bridge approach and obtain current instructions rather than entering.
A closure is a safety decision, not a suggestion that applies only to drivers who feel uncertain. Even a short bridge crossing can expose traffic to a condition the owner has determined cannot safely accommodate vehicles.

If the bridge is open under restrictions: make the controls your driving plan
Approach at the posted control
Read the advance signs before you reach the structure. Identify the open lane, the direction of travel, any alternating-traffic arrangement, the posted speed, and vehicle or load limits. Reduce speed as required by the sign or signal and be prepared to stop at the designated control point. Do not create a second, driver-chosen pattern by waving other vehicles through, changing lanes or accelerating to beat a signal.
Obey temporary signals and flaggers
A temporary traffic signal or flagger controls when each direction may enter a shared or narrowed section. Wait for your signal or the flagger’s direction, then proceed through the permitted lane. If the signal is red or the flagger stops your direction, remain behind the control point. Do not enter because the lane appears empty; the opposing direction may already have authorization to use it.
Stay within the marked path
Cones, drums, barriers and temporary lane markings define the route the agency has made available. Keep the vehicle in that lane and avoid any maneuver that conflicts with the traffic control or forces another driver to react abruptly. Do not cross a barrier or use a closed shoulder, work area or unmarked portion of the bridge as an improvised lane.

Use the posted speed and load limits
The sign at that bridge governs your speed; there is no universal “damaged-bridge speed” that can be safely substituted for it. The same applies to weight and vehicle restrictions. A lower speed may be posted for a particular repair arrangement, while another bridge may have a different limit or a full closure. Treat the displayed restriction as binding for that crossing.

Cross without stopping on the structure
Once you are authorized to enter, continue through the controlled section without stopping on the bridge. Do not stop to inspect damage, take photographs, wait for someone to catch up or resolve a navigation decision. If you need assistance or discover that you cannot comply with the restriction, follow the control point’s direction and leave the structure when permitted; seek help from a safe location off the bridge.
Exit on the authorized route
Remain in the designated lane until you are beyond the repair controls and any temporary markings. Continue to obey the posted restrictions until the agency’s signs show that they end. Do not accelerate, merge or turn in a way that conflicts with the temporary layout or creates an abrupt interaction with other vehicles.
How to read the temporary controls
Alternating temporary signals
When one lane serves both directions, signals are commonly used to release traffic one direction at a time. A green indication authorizes your movement only through the controlled section; it does not cancel a speed, load or lane restriction. A red indication requires you to wait at the approach. Follow the signal’s cycle rather than trying to estimate when opposing traffic should arrive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFlaggers
A flagger’s instructions apply at the work-zone control point. Stop where directed, proceed only when directed and remain alert for a changed instruction. If a flagger and a sign appear inconsistent, stop and seek clarification from the person controlling traffic rather than choosing the instruction that is more convenient.

Cones, barriers and lane markings
These devices narrow and channel the route that remains available. They also separate live traffic from repair activity. Do not move a cone, drive through a taper, straddle a line or enter a protected work area to avoid a queue. A permitted lane can end before the bridge itself, so keep reading the temporary markings through the entire approach and exit.
Speed and load postings
Speed signs and load postings are part of the bridge’s operating condition, not optional advice. A restriction may apply only during repair or until the agency announces a change. Keep the qualification with the number: the value on the current sign applies to that location, direction and period.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported a local emergency-repair arrangement for the US 101 Hoh River Bridge on July 14, 2026. Traffic was restricted to one lane through the center of the bridge, alternating under temporary traffic signals, and the speed limit across the bridge was reduced to 25 mph. WSDOT’s page states: “The speed limit across the bridge is reduced to 25 mph.” See the agency’s notice at US 101 Hoh River Bridge Emergency Repair.

This example shows how an agency can keep a crossing operating while changing its lane arrangement, direction control and speed. It does not establish a safe speed for another bridge. A different structure may have a different limit, a load posting, a flagger, a full closure or no public crossing at all. Use the current notice and signs for the bridge you intend to cross.

What you cannot safely infer from an open bridge
- Open does not mean unrestricted. A bridge can admit one direction at a time, exclude certain vehicles or require a reduced speed.
- More inspections do not replace corrective action. FHWA’s statement about critical findings means that inspection frequency alone is not the safety remedy when the underlying issue has not been addressed.
- A familiar crossing is not automatically unchanged. Repairs can alter lanes, signals, loads or closure hours between trips.
- There is no universal technique for every damaged bridge. The available official material does not establish one standard following distance, gear selection, lane position or driver-selected speed for all damaged structures. Do not invent a number or technique when the agency has not posted one.
Why the status may change while repairs continue
Work-zone traffic management is designed to respond to changing conditions. FHWA says its Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule was published on November 1, 2024, and took effect on December 2, 2024. The rule provides the policy framework for managing safety and mobility around work zones; the bridge owner still determines the controls for a particular crossing. Read the policy information at FHWA Work Zone: Regulation and Policy.
For that reason, check the advisory again if your trip is later than planned, if severe conditions affect the route, or if you receive conflicting information from a map or third party. A notice that permitted traffic yesterday does not override a closure posted today.
If you arrive and the instructions are unclear
- Do not enter the controlled area while deciding. Stop before the barrier, signal or flagger’s control point, in a location that does not block approaching traffic.
- Look for the most recent official sign or message. Confirm whether the apparent conflict is an old sign, a changed lane pattern or a temporary stoppage.
- Do not improvise a crossing. Never select your own speed, lane, turn, gap or load interpretation to get past an unclear control.
- Choose another route if you cannot establish the current instruction. Contact the responsible road agency from a safe location and obtain clarification before attempting the bridge.
If conditions change after you have been authorized to cross, continue to obey the active signal, flagger and lane controls. Do not stop on the bridge to resolve a navigation or vehicle question.
Driver checklist
- Confirm the bridge’s current status with the responsible transportation agency.
- Record the route, direction and any announced closure period or restriction that applies to your trip.
- Check whether your vehicle, trailer, axle configuration or load is allowed.
- Plan the signed detour before departure in case the status changes.
- Approach slowly enough to read every temporary sign and identify the control point.
- Obey temporary signals and flaggers exactly.
- Stay inside the marked lane and away from barriers and work areas.
- Keep to the posted speed and any posted vehicle or load limit.
- Do not stop on the bridge or make an abrupt maneuver that conflicts with traffic control.
- If the status or instruction is unclear, do not cross; use another route and contact the road authority.
Why equipment cannot make a damaged bridge safe
No vehicle accessory, navigation device, tool or consumer product can replace the bridge owner’s closure, restriction and traffic-control decision. Safety depends on the structure’s assessed condition and the operating plan established for that location. The reliable action is to follow the current official instruction, not to purchase something intended to compensate for an unknown structural condition.
