There is no universal way to drain a window air conditioner. Check the manual for your exact make and model before removing a plug or looking for a drain hole: some units are designed to manage condensate without an operating drain, while others have model-specific drainage instructions. The right steps also depend on whether water is leaking indoors or you are preparing the unit for storage.
First, identify what the water is doing
Find the model number—often on a label on the unit—and consult its owner’s manual. Determine whether you are dealing with water during normal cooling, an indoor leak, or standing water before seasonal storage. These situations may call for different actions.
- Water during operation: The unit may be designed to retain or manage condensate. Do not remove a drain plug unless the manual directs you to.
- Water leaking inside: Check installation security, the specified tilt, and any model-specific plug instructions.
- Winter storage: Drain standing water only as the manual instructs for that model.
How to check an indoor leak
Confirm the unit is secure and positioned correctly
A window AC needs to be firmly installed, and its angle can affect where condensate goes. LG’s general US window-type installation guidance specifies a rear-down tilt of about 10–15 mm; it says insufficient rear tilt can contribute to condensate overflowing indoors. This is LG guidance, not a universal measurement, so follow your model’s manual if it specifies a different position. LG’s window AC installation guidance explains checking the tilt with a level. A level can help check the angle, but the manual determines the correct slope.
Check the plug only as the manual directs
A loose or missing plug can contribute to leakage on some models, while removing a plug on another model may change how it is meant to handle water. LG lists incorrect tilt and a loose or missing plug among possible causes of dripping or condensation problems. LG’s leakage guidance is not a substitute for the instructions for your exact unit.

Why some window ACs have no drain hole
Do not assume a missing drain hole is a defect. GE says its window room air conditioners are not designed with a plug or hole for removing excess water during operation. GE’s drain-plug guidance describes that design. Other models may use a plug or controlled drainage, so use the manual rather than copying another unit’s setup.
For example, the Midea MAW10S1DWBL user guide says condensate should not drain from its overflow hole during normal operation after proper installation and gives a model-specific outside tilt dimension. That model’s user guide illustrates why drainage instructions should not be generalized across brands or models.

How to drain water before storage
Use the storage procedure in the manual for your exact model. Some units have a plug or other provision for draining water from the base pan; others may not be intended to drain the same way. The Midea MAW06V1UBL manual describes a rubber plug that allows water to drip slowly and advises draining water present in the base pan before winter storage. Do not drill a drain hole
Never drill into the cabinet to create a drain. Haier warns that drilling holes in the housing can damage the unit. Haier’s guidance on water entering the room cautions against modifying the housing.

When to get service
If water continues leaking indoors after you have checked the unit’s secure installation, model-specific slope, and plug instructions, contact the manufacturer’s support team or a qualified appliance technician. There is no single repair procedure that applies to every window AC.
