Then notify your insurer promptly, photograph and inventory losses, keep a dated record of claim communications and expenses, and gather detailed written estimates for repairs or rebuilding. Your policy, insurer procedures, state rules, and any disaster orders determine the required forms, deadlines, and coverage.
What to do first: stay safe and open the claim
Follow evacuation orders and fire-authority instructions; do not enter an unsafe or restricted area to take photographs or retrieve records. Nevada’s Division of Insurance puts safety first in its wildfire recovery guidance. Review the policy after evacuation, when it is safe to do so.

Once safe, contact your insurer or agent. Get the claim number and the name and contact information of the person handling the claim. Ask for a complete policy copy if you do not have one, and ask the insurer to identify the forms, evidence, deadlines, and temporary measures that apply to your claim. Keep your current phone number, email, and lodging address up to date if you have been displaced. The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance post-disaster guide and the California Department of Insurance wildfire tips also advise prompt communication and attention to the claim process.
What should you photograph after a wildfire?
When access is safe and permitted, take wide views of each affected room or area, then closer images of specific damage. Photograph the home, other structures, and damaged belongings. Capture visible structural problems as well as damage to finishes and contents. If possible, photograph items before moving them.

These are useful organization practices, not a universal insurer-mandated photo format. The official guidance reviewed does not establish a required image count, naming convention, or specific app. If cleanup or access restrictions make photographing an item impossible, do not risk your safety to get the image; explain the circumstances to the insurer.
How to inventory a home when belongings burned
Keep the dwelling and other structures in a separate damage list from your personal-property inventory. For contents, work room by room and describe each item as specifically as you can. Include the brand or model, approximate purchase date, and original cost when known. Note estimated replacement information separately from original purchase details.
Gather receipts, bills, photos, and other purchase records that remain available. If records or belongings were destroyed, begin with what you remember in each room, then review old phone or family photos for items in the background. Online retailer listings may help you estimate an item’s cost, as noted in Missouri’s post-disaster guide. Clearly label memory-based descriptions and reconstructed prices as estimates; do not present them as original receipts.

If you can safely retain damaged items, ask the adjuster to review them before disposal. If an item creates a safety, sanitation, or access problem, ask the adjuster how to handle it rather than keeping it at any cost. Wildfire cleanup conditions may make preserving or photographing every item impractical.
Keep a claim diary and save expense records
Use a paper notebook, phone notes, spreadsheet, or digital folder—whichever you can maintain reliably—to track claim activity. For each call or exchange, record:
- Date, claim number, and the name and role of the person you contacted.
- Phone number or other contact details.
- Your question, the answer or instruction, and any action the insurer or you agreed to take.
- Deadlines mentioned and the date you plan to follow up.
Keep copies of emails, letters, forms, submitted inventories, photographs, and estimates. If the insurer or adjuster says a category of loss is excluded, limited, or conditional, ask which policy provision applies; the California Residential Property Claims Guide recommends asking for the relevant provision.

Save receipts for reasonable temporary repairs, lodging, and other expenses you intend to claim, and ask the insurer how your policy handles and requires submission of those expenses. Do not assume temporary-repair payments are separate from the overall settlement: California’s claims guide notes they may count toward it. The amount, eligibility, and documentation requirements depend on your policy and circumstances.

Prepare for the adjuster’s inspection
Before the inspection, organize your damage lists, contents inventory, photos and videos, available receipts, and any contractor bids. If possible, be present to point out suspected damage and answer questions. Take notes, get the adjuster’s contact information, and ask what additional evidence is needed and when to expect an update.
A repair or rebuilding scope should account for the degree of damage, measurements, and the quality of materials and workmanship. These are factors identified in California’s Residential Property Claims Guide. Your photos and notes can help the adjuster understand what was affected, but the insurer’s inspection and policy terms determine how the claim is evaluated.

Document rebuilding costs with detailed written bids
When practical, request written, itemized bids from reputable, appropriately licensed contractors. A useful estimate makes the proposed work easier to compare with the insurer’s estimate. Ask that it identify the scope and quantities of work, material specifications, labor, and prices line by line. Missouri’s post-disaster guide says bids can help with a claim, though they are not necessarily required, and recommends line-by-line materials, prices, and labor.
Compare estimates by checking:
- Scope: Are the same structures, rooms, contents, cleanup, and temporary measures included? What is omitted?
- Quantity and quality: Do measurements, item counts, material grades, and workmanship assumptions match?
- Cost basis: Are labor, materials, and other line items shown clearly and tied to the proposed work?
- Coverage basis: What policy provisions, limits, deductible, depreciation, or code-upgrade benefits does the insurer apply?
- Evidence: Is a figure supported by a receipt or pre-loss record, a contractor estimate, or memory-based reconstruction?
These are practical comparison questions, not a scoring system prescribed by insurance authorities. Ask the insurer to explain differences between its estimate and the contractor’s scope, and identify the applicable policy limits before committing to extensive permanent work. California’s wildfire tips recommend obtaining a rebuilding estimate to assess costs against policy limits and state that policyholders may choose their contractor. Check contractor licensing with the relevant state authority before hiring.

Coverage, deadlines, and outside help depend on your circumstances
There is no single wildfire-claim checklist that overrides the policy or state requirements. Coverage for repairs, code upgrades, additional living expenses (ALE), proof-of-loss forms, and deadlines can vary by policy and jurisdiction. Ask the insurer to point to the governing policy language and confirm applicable forms and due dates. Your state insurance department can provide consumer assistance if you need help understanding the process.
Do not feel pressured to rush a decision about a contractor, lawyer, or public adjuster. California’s wildfire claimant guidance cautions against rushed decisions in the insurance process. If you consider hiring professional help, check licensing, fees, and contract terms, and remember that California-specific consumer protections are not automatically rules in other states.
