A crisp 16- to 18-inch fabric napkin gives the most stable result, but a large, sturdy paper dinner napkin also works. Allow about 2–5 minutes per bunny once you have practiced the folds.
What you’ll need
- One large square napkin for each place setting. A 16- to 18-inch square is a useful size; a napkin measuring about 40 × 40 cm is also suitable.
- Optional: large square cloth napkins in cotton or linen for the most structured, reusable version.
- Optional: sturdy square paper napkins if you want disposable place settings. Choose large dinner napkins rather than small cocktail napkins.
- Optional fabric starch for cotton or linen napkins.
- Optional egg, ribbon, twine, twist tie, rubber band, or napkin ring for the alternative version or for extra decoration.
Starched cotton or linen holds the ears upright most reliably. A large, heavyweight paper napkin is a convenient alternative, but handle it gently because repeated creasing can tear or flatten the paper.

How to fold a bunny napkin
This tuck-based method creates a bunny that can sit on a plate without a separate fastener.
1. Open and smooth the napkin
Lay the square napkin flat with one corner or edge facing you. Smooth out major wrinkles. If you are using a cloth napkin, starch and press it first if the fabric is soft or floppy. You do not need to remove every wrinkle, but the main creases should be clear and sharp.

2. Fold it into a long strip
Fold the napkin in half, then fold it in half again lengthwise. You should now have a long, narrow rectangle. Keep the loose edges facing the same direction as you continue; consistent edge placement makes the later folds easier to follow.
3. Form the pointed top
Identify the center line of the strip. Fold the upper left section down toward the center line, then fold the upper right section down toward the center line. The top should begin to resemble a kite or pointed shape, with the two sides meeting neatly near the middle.
4. Fold the lower corners upward
Bring the lower left corner upward toward the center, then repeat with the lower right corner. Press both creases firmly. The napkin should now look more compact and roughly square or diamond-shaped rather than like a long strip.
5. Bring both sides to the center
Fold the left side inward along the center line. Fold the right side inward in the same way. Keep the folds symmetrical and press them flat so the shape does not loosen when you turn it over.

6. Turn the napkin and fold up the bottom point
Flip the napkin over as one piece. Fold the bottom point upward to create the lower triangular section of the bunny. This is the part that will become the body and base.
7. Tuck the corners together
Fold the left and right corners toward the back. Tuck one corner into the pocket formed by the other corner. Press the interlocking tuck firmly enough to hold the body together, but avoid flattening the upper section where the ears will be.
8. Pull up the ears and open the base
Rotate the napkin so its front faces you. Gently pull the two upper points upward to form the ears. Then open the lower portion slightly so the bunny can sit upright on the plate. Adjust the ears until they are similar in height and width.

The finished bunny is decorative rather than a permanently rigid sculpture. Its ability to stand depends on the napkin’s size and stiffness, the sharpness of the creases, and how securely the rear tuck is made.

Quick bunny-ear fold using an egg
Use this version when you want a fast Easter place-setting decoration or when your napkin will not hold the structured fold.
- Lay a large square napkin flat and fold it diagonally into a triangle.
- Starting at the wide edge or point, roll or fold the triangle into a long, narrow strip.
- Place a plastic, faux, or hard-boiled egg at the center of the strip.
- Bring the two ends of the strip upward around the egg so they become ears.
- Tie the napkin above the egg with ribbon or twine, leaving the upper ends loose as two ears.
- Stand the egg on a plate and adjust the ears so they are even.
plastic or faux Easter eggs are especially convenient because they are lightweight, reusable, and do not need refrigeration. A hard-boiled egg also works if the bunny will be served or displayed for an appropriate length of time. For this variation, ribbon or twine is both a practical fastener and a decorative accent.
Choosing a napkin that works
| Napkin choice | Advantages | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Starched cotton or linen | Best structure, sharp creases, reusable | May need starching or pressing before folding |
| Unstarched cotton or linen | Soft, attractive, and washable | Ears may droop if the fabric is thin |
| Large heavyweight paper | Disposable and convenient for a large gathering | Fold gently; repeated handling can cause tears |
| Small cocktail or luncheon napkin | Easy to find | Usually too small for recognizable ears and a stable base |
Large squares are easier to manipulate and create fuller ears. White, pastel, gingham, and spring-patterned napkins all suit an Easter table. Solid or lightly patterned napkins make the creases easier to see, while a bold pattern can add color even if the folds are less visible.

Troubleshooting the bunny fold
The ears collapse
Use a larger or stiffer napkin and sharpen the creases before assembling the body. For cotton or linen, try fabric starch for napkins or press the napkin before folding. If the finished bunny is still soft, lean it against a glass or cup; not every napkin will stand unaided.
The body will not stay together
The structured version depends on the final corner tuck. Unfold the rear corners and check that one corner has been inserted into the pocket created by the other. Recenter the napkin, press the connection firmly, and then reopen the base. If the paper is too slippery or thin, use the egg-and-ribbon version instead.
The ears are uneven
Before the final tuck, check that the napkin is centered and that both sides are the same length. For the egg variation, place the egg exactly at the midpoint before tying. Small adjustments to the ear tips are easier before the bunny is placed on the plate.

The paper tears or loses its shape
Switch to a large, heavyweight paper dinner napkin and avoid repeatedly unfolding the same crease. Fold with your fingertips rather than dragging a fingernail across the paper. Fabric is the more forgiving choice when a crisp, freestanding bunny is important.

Place one bunny in the center of each plate and coordinate the napkin color with pastel eggs, flowers, or the dinnerware. A faux egg can remain in the quick version, while a small edible Easter treat can be added to the finished fold when appropriate.
For an additional themed accent, use decorative Easter napkin rings around an ordinary folded napkin or around the body of a softer bunny. A napkin ring is optional for the structured tuck-based fold, but it can add color and provide extra support when the napkin is being used mainly as table decor.
Ribbon, twine, and napkin rings can also help distinguish place settings. Keep the fastener loose enough that guests can remove the napkin easily, and avoid accessories that could shed fibers or scratch delicate plates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size napkin is best for an Easter bunny fold?
Use a large square napkin, ideally about 16 to 18 inches on each side. Larger napkins produce fuller ears and are easier to fold into a stable base.

Can I make a bunny napkin fold with paper napkins?
Yes. Choose a large, sturdy square dinner napkin and handle it gently. Thin or small paper napkins may tear or produce ears that collapse; a starched fabric napkin is more reliable for a freestanding bunny.
Do bunny napkins need to be secured with ribbon?
No. The structured fold can hold together when one rear corner is tucked into the pocket formed by the other. Ribbon or twine is useful for the quicker egg-based variation or as an optional decorative accent.
Why will my bunny napkin not stand up?
The napkin may be too thin, too small, or insufficiently creased. Try a larger, stiffer napkin, starch a cotton or linen napkin, reinforce the creases, or support the bunny against a glass or cup.
The Bottom Line
For the most recognizable freestanding bunny, use a large crisp square napkin, make firm symmetrical creases, and secure the body with the rear corner tuck. If you need a faster decoration, wrap a folded napkin around an egg and tie it above the egg to create simple ears.
