If your miter saw blade coasts, stops inconsistently, or takes longer than about five seconds to stop, stop using the saw and arrange service. Bosch and DEWALT manuals specify a stop of about five seconds for the models they cover; that timing is not universal to every miter saw. The brake is part of the motor’s electrical system, so replacing brushes or a switch without identifying the fault can leave the saw unsafe.
What the electric brake does—and what a slow stop means
On many miter saws, releasing the trigger activates an electric motor-braking circuit. Bosch and DEWALT manuals describe the blade stopping in about five seconds on the specific models covered. If the stop is delayed, intermittent, or accompanied by skipping, treat it as a fault rather than normal blade run-down.

Do not assume every saw uses the same circuit or stopping specification. The correct diagnosis and parts depend on the saw’s complete model and type or revision number, voltage, and whether it is corded or cordless.
What to do when the blade does not stop normally
- Identify the exact saw. Record the brand, full model, type or revision number, voltage, and power configuration. Find the manual and parts diagram for that exact version.
- Make the saw safe. Unplug a corded saw or remove the battery before opening any cover or handling the blade. Keep hands clear, leave the lower guard in place, and never test the brake against a workpiece.
- Observe the stopping behavior without cutting. Release the trigger and note whether the blade stops promptly and consistently. The cited Bosch and DEWALT models specify about five seconds; use the specification in your own manual if it differs.
- For an intermittent delay or skipping, use only the manual’s permitted check. Bosch manuals allow switching the saw on and off four or five times without contacting a workpiece. This is a limited diagnostic check, not a repair or permission to keep working if the fault recurs. DEWALT gives the same cycle check for the DW717 and directs owners to service if the condition persists (DW717 instruction manual).
- Stop using the saw if the fault remains. Bosch says not to use the saw if the brake does not consistently stop the blade in about five seconds, and to have it serviced. DEWALT likewise directs owners to an authorized service center if delay or skipping persists. Do not continue cutting while waiting to see whether the problem improves.
Check the battery on a cordless saw
A cordless electric brake needs power available to operate. Bosch’s GCM18V10SD instructions say the braking action begins only when the trigger is released and the tool has power available (GCM18V10SD instructions). If the battery is discharged, charge it or try a known-good compatible battery before concluding that the brake circuit has failed. If stopping remains abnormal with adequate power, take the saw out of service.

Could brushes, the commutator, or the switch be responsible?
Bosch identifies commutator or brush contamination and motor-component failure as possible causes of brake trouble. That does not establish that brushes are the cause of a particular saw’s slow stop. A brush-type motor may use replaceable carbon brushes, but brush condition, fit, and replacement procedure are model-specific; some saws may have different motor designs.
A trigger switch or other electrical component could also be involved, but the available manuals do not make a slow stop a reliable switch diagnosis. Do not buy a generic brush or switch on that assumption. Use the exact model and type number to check the parts drawing and service information.

When to replace brushes—and when to use a service center
Consider a brush replacement only if the exact saw’s documentation identifies replaceable carbon brushes, inspection or symptoms support that diagnosis, and you can follow the model-specific service procedure safely. Bosch provides parts information and exploded drawings through its parts service (Bosch parts service). DEWALT directs owners to look up the exact model and type through ServiceNet (DEWALT ServiceNet).

Use an authorized service facility when the brake fault persists, the likely cause is unclear, or diagnosis requires electrical or motor work beyond your skill. Check warranty coverage before opening or repairing the saw: DEWALT warns that electrical or mechanical replacement during the warranty period may affect coverage. Its service information identifies authorized repair as the route for model-specific support (DEWALT repair and service). Confirm current warranty terms, parts availability, and service arrangements with the manufacturer.

Choosing a repair route

Follow the service provider’s instructions and the saw manual for any post-repair check. The saw must stop consistently within the specification in its own manual; if it does not, disconnect power or remove the battery and return it for service. The electric brake never replaces the lower guard, a safe stance, or waiting until the blade has come to a complete stop before moving material or reaching near the cutting area.
