A beautiful walled garden starts with how you want to use it, not with a plant list. Map the space, observe its sun, wind, soil and damp conditions, then give paths, seating and planting a clear structure. Treat each wall as its own growing environment: its aspect and shelter can change the light, temperature and rain a plant receives.
Start with how you want to use the garden
Decide whether the enclosure is mainly for sitting, entertaining, growing food, privacy, ornamental planting or a mix. Those choices determine where circulation, seating and planting should go. For example, a garden used for evening meals needs a practical route to its table and a spot that is comfortable at that time of day; a food-growing garden needs accessible beds or containers and room to tend them.
Before settling on a layout, sketch the boundaries, doors, paths, utilities, existing trees, changes in level and views. Consider what the garden looks like from inside the house as well as when you are outdoors. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends getting to know a plot across the seasons, ideally over a year, because conditions and views change through the year (RHS: Know your garden).

Track sun, shade and wind
Note where the sun falls in the morning, afternoon and evening, and where shade persists. Record which direction each wall faces and where wind tends to come from. South- and west-facing walls are often warmer and sunnier, while north- and east-facing areas are often cooler or shadier, but nearby buildings, trees and local weather can alter the pattern. The RHS describes south-facing walls or fences as the hottest and north-facing ones as the coolest; use that as a starting point, then observe your own site (RHS: Know your garden).

Check soil, drainage and the wall base
A narrow strip beside a wall may be a difficult place to plant. It can receive less rain than open ground, have shallow soil or rubble below the surface, and be pinched by a path, foundations, drains or cement footings. Check how quickly the ground dries and where water collects before choosing plants or adding soil. The Royal Meteorological Society notes that the sheltered side of a wall or fence can receive 50% less rain than the exposed side; this figure describes the sheltered-versus-exposed comparison in its guidance, not a guaranteed reduction at every garden (Royal Meteorological Society: Microclimates).
Where a border beside a building wall needs improvement, organic matter and mulch may help retain moisture if appropriate for the site. Keep added soil below the damp-proof course beside a house wall, and do not assume the wall is suitable for drilling or fixing supports without checking its condition and construction (RHS: Growing climbers on walls).

Give the enclosure a clear, usable structure
Use paths and planting edges to make the space feel intentional, while leaving access for people and garden maintenance. Place seating where it gets the light, shade or shelter you want at the times you expect to use it. A focal point—such as a specimen plant, a container or a view framed by the layout—can give the eye somewhere to settle without crowding the floor area.
In a compact garden, use vertical surfaces before filling every available patch of ground with beds or pots. Climbers and trained fruit trees can make use of walls or fences, while containers can support edible crops where ground space is limited. Choose the scale of plants and pots to suit the soil volume available and the care you can provide (RHS: Small gardens).

Choose a wall-growing approach that fits the site
| Approach | Useful for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Direct planting with climbers or shrubs | Covering a wall or fence with suitable plants | Check light, soil, moisture, mature spread and whether the wall needs support or protection. |
| Trellis or training wires | Supporting climbers or training fruit trees while preserving floor space | Confirm that the wall and fixing method are suitable; allow access for pruning and care. |
| Modular living-wall system | Planting vertically where a conventional border is limited | Account for irrigation, installation, ongoing maintenance and access for replacing plants. |
There is no single best method for every garden. Direct planting and a simple support can be less complex than an engineered living-wall system, while the latter may suit a site where vertical planting is a priority and its watering and upkeep can be managed. The RHS advises grouping plants with similar light and moisture needs in a green wall. Its guidance uses less than half a day of midsummer sun as a cue to select shade plants for such a system; that is a specific planting guide, not a universal threshold for every plant or wall (RHS: Green walls).

Choose plants for the light, soil and moisture at their exact position rather than treating the enclosed garden as uniform. A sunny wall and a shaded corner may need different choices, and a sheltered wall base may need more attention to watering than an open bed. Consider the plant’s mature size and the space available for roots, pruning and access.

If you are growing a climber or trained fruit tree, plan its support and maintenance as part of the layout. Leave room to reach the plant for pruning and to inspect the wall. Where the soil beside the wall is shallow or unsuitable, containers may offer more control, provided their size and watering needs are manageable.
Build in comfort and upkeep
Before committing to the finished arrangement, revisit the garden at the times you expect to use it. Check whether a seating area is too exposed, whether a route becomes awkward around containers, and whether planting blocks an important view or access point. Walls can shelter a space, but they also change sunlight, wind, temperature and humidity; they do not guarantee ideal conditions for every plant or a comfortable microclimate in every season.
