Decide asset by asset: first confirm the machine or component is fit for the mine plan that lies ahead, then compare a documented remanufacture or rebuild scope with a like-for-like replacement proposal. The lower quoted price is not automatically the lower-cost choice. Downtime, delivery lead time, expected service life, reliability and safety requirements, configuration, parts, warranty and support can change the result.

There is no universal age, operating-hours or cost threshold that determines when mining equipment should be remanufactured or replaced. The decision depends on the condition of the specific asset, the proposed work and the role the mine still needs it to perform.

First define what “remanufacture,” “rebuild” and “replace” mean

These terms can describe materially different work. Before comparing proposals, define the scope each supplier is pricing. A component remanufacture is not the same as a component exchange, a machine rebuild or buying a replacement machine. If the proposals cover different work, their prices and promised outcomes are not directly comparable.

Component remanufacturing

A component is returned for inspection and restoration under a supplier’s remanufacturing process. Ask which parts are inspected, which are restored or replaced, what testing is performed and what condition or performance is warranted. The term alone does not establish the scope or acceptance criteria.

Component exchange

An exchange program supplies an eligible replacement component, often in return for the customer’s used component, or “core.” The transaction may depend on core condition, eligibility, stock, pricing rules and return timing. Treat the exchange terms as a separate commercial proposal, not as an assumed feature of every remanufacturing offer.

Machine rebuild

A rebuild may involve inspection, structural restoration, replacement of critical components and engineering upgrades. Komatsu describes rebuild work that can include these elements, but the actual scope must be confirmed for the particular machine and proposal. Establish what is included, what is excluded, what is optional and what remains subject to inspection after disassembly.

Replacement

A replacement proposal should describe the machine and configuration being supplied, its delivery commitment and the work required to put it into service. Include associated needs such as commissioning, operator or maintenance training, and infrastructure or compatibility changes where they apply. A quoted machine price by itself is not a complete comparison with a rebuild.

Start with the machine’s condition and its future job

Before requesting a final authorization, define the application the asset is expected to serve and the operating life needed from it. Confirm that the mine plan still calls for that application; an asset that is technically repairable may not be worth restoring if its capacity or configuration no longer fits the work. Conversely, replacing a machine is not automatically necessary just because a major component is due for work.

Request a condition assessment that distinguishes the base machine’s structural viability from the condition of individual components. A supplier’s preliminary scope may change after teardown, when hidden damage, wear or parts needs become visible. Caterpillar’s rebuild guidance notes that scope may depend on teardown inspection, component condition, parts availability and customer approval. Record which items are known, which are provisional and who must approve additions before the work proceeds.

  • Ask for inspection findings, structural observations and a component-by-component list.
  • Separate mandatory repairs from recommended reliability work and optional upgrades.
  • Identify exclusions, assumptions and components whose condition cannot be confirmed until disassembly.
  • Agree on the process for documenting new findings, approving scope changes and pricing additional work.
  • Compare the assessed condition against the mine plan’s required capacity, duty cycle, safety needs and configuration.

The assessment should answer two distinct questions: can the existing base machine be restored to an acceptable condition, and would the restored machine still do the job the mine needs? Do not let a favourable answer to one stand in for the other.

Compare whole-life consequences, not just capital quotes

Prepare comparable proposals for the work needed to return each option to service. Use the same planning horizon and operating assumptions for remanufacture or rebuild and replacement. A price comparison that omits downtime, lead time or the operating life expected after the work can obscure the practical trade-off.

Decision area Questions to resolve Evidence to request
Condition and repairability Is the frame or base machine structurally viable? Which components are inside or outside the proposed work? Inspection findings, structural observations, component list, exclusions and post-teardown approval process.
Operational fit Will the option meet required safety, emissions, capacity, reliability and configuration needs? Does the future mine plan still require this application? Mine-plan assumptions, duty cycle, required capacity, engineering assessment and defined upgrade scope.
Economics What are the full costs of each option over the planning horizon? Itemized scopes and quotes covering parts, labour, core credits, warranty, support and operating-cost assumptions.
Time and availability How much production is exposed during work? When can a replacement be delivered, or an exchange component supplied? Work schedule, delivery commitments, exchange eligibility, logistics and contingency plan.
Reliability and support What condition and performance are promised after the work, and who will support the asset? Test and commissioning records, acceptance criteria, warranty exclusions, parts strategy and service coverage.
Environmental impact Are the options measured on a comparable basis? Supplier methodology or an independent lifecycle assessment using aligned boundaries and assumptions.

For the financial comparison, list each option’s quoted work and the assumptions behind its expected operating costs and remaining service life. Include the cost of downtime or production exposure using the mine’s own planning assumptions rather than a generic estimate. Note any expected value from upgrades separately from the cost of restoring the existing configuration. If one proposal omits an item included in the other, request clarification or price the missing item before drawing a conclusion.

Run sensitivity cases where uncertain inputs could change the preferred option. For example, show how the decision changes if teardown reveals additional repairs, if the delivery date moves, or if the asset is needed for a shorter or longer period than planned. Keep those cases tied to the mine’s actual assumptions; the available supplier material does not establish a universal break-even formula or site-specific cost threshold.

Make downtime and lead time explicit

Time out of service can matter as much as the invoice total, particularly when the machine supports a production-critical application. Compare the expected work schedule for a rebuild with the replacement’s delivery and commissioning timeline. Ask suppliers to distinguish confirmed dates from estimates, and identify dependencies such as parts availability, teardown findings, shipping and customer approvals.

For an exchange component, confirm whether the needed unit is in stock, when it can ship and what logistics or core-return timing apply. An exchange may reduce the time required to restore a machine in some circumstances, but that benefit depends on actual eligibility, stock and transport arrangements. Do not treat a program description as a delivery commitment for a specific model, location or date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Map the period from authorization to return to service for each option.
  • Identify which milestones are committed and which depend on inspection, parts or transport.
  • Include commissioning and any required operator or maintenance training in the schedule.
  • Ask how the plan changes if teardown identifies additional work or replacement delivery slips.
  • Record a contingency plan for production exposure during the expected outage.

Test reliability, safety and support promises

A rebuild or remanufacture proposal should state what condition is promised after work, how the result will be tested and what evidence will be supplied at acceptance. Request test and commissioning documentation, defined acceptance criteria and a clear list of warranty exclusions. A statement that work is “rebuilt” or “remanufactured” is not, on its own, a measurable performance commitment.

Assess whether the proposed result satisfies the machine’s required safety, emissions, capacity and configuration needs for its intended application and jurisdiction. If upgrades are proposed, ask which engineering change addresses which requirement and whether the upgrade affects compatibility, maintenance or training. The mine’s engineering and compliance teams should verify the applicable requirements; a supplier’s scope or an industry standard does not determine every site’s legal or contractual obligations.

Support after return to service is part of the decision. Compare service coverage, parts access and the responsibility for diagnosing and resolving problems. Clarify whether support is provided by the supplier, a dealer or another party, and whether the coverage applies at the machine’s location. Establish the parts strategy for components likely to affect availability over the planned service period.

Check component-program terms before counting savings

Commercial details can make a component exchange or remanufacture proposal more or less attractive. Caterpillar describes core-related savings and notes that model and application can affect program details. Liebherr describes repair and exchange options and warranty terms. Those descriptions do not establish current eligibility, price or availability for a particular component, machine or region; obtain the terms that apply to the actual transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Core condition: Ask what condition the returned component must meet, how it will be assessed and what happens if it does not qualify.
  • Credit and pricing: Confirm whether the quote is fixed or variable, what credit is conditional on the core and which charges can change.
  • Stock and logistics: Verify exchange-unit availability, shipping dates, transport responsibilities and the core-return deadline.
  • Eligibility: Confirm the exact component and machine model are covered, including any application restrictions.
  • Warranty: Request the term, coverage, exclusions and process for making a claim in writing.
  • Geography and support: Check that the program and service coverage apply where the machine operates.

Compare an exchange quote with the alternative on the same basis: net price after any conditional credit, all logistics and installation costs, timing, warranty and the condition of the supplied component. Do not count a core credit as guaranteed until its eligibility and valuation basis are clear.

Interpret environmental claims in context

Remanufacturing can be presented as an environmental benefit, but a vendor’s component-level claim is not automatically a mine-specific lifecycle result. Liebherr publishes claims of “Over 50% reduction in the component’s carbon footprint” through remanufacturing compared with manufacturing a new one, and “Up to 75% raw materials savings.” These are manufacturer-reported figures; the claim page does not state a publication year for the figures.

Use those figures only with the attribution and scope attached. The available information does not establish an independent comparison for a particular mine, machine, component or operating life. To compare options for a procurement decision, ask for the methodology and system boundary or obtain an independent lifecycle assessment. Check that the compared options use the same component, operating-life assumptions and other relevant boundaries. Do not present a supplier percentage as the result for a specific site unless the comparison basis supports that conclusion.

Use ISO 10987-2 as a reference, not a substitute for engineering review

ISO 10987-2:2017, Earth-moving machinery — Sustainability — Part 2: Remanufacturing, addresses identification and labelling, applicable processes and relevant information for remanufactured components. ISO states that the 2017 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standard can help frame questions about how remanufactured components are identified and what process information is relevant. It does not settle the mine’s specific legal, safety, contractual or engineering requirements. Ask the relevant engineering and compliance teams to determine whether and how it applies to the machine, component and jurisdiction at issue.

A procurement sequence for reaching a defensible decision

  1. Define the future requirement. Document the intended application, required operating life, duty cycle, capacity and safety or configuration changes.
  2. Obtain an asset-specific assessment. Request inspection evidence for the base machine and components, including structural observations and known limitations.
  3. Separate firm scope from provisional scope. Mark what is included now, what depends on teardown, what is excluded and how additional work will be approved.
  4. Request a comparable replacement proposal. Include configuration, delivery timing, commissioning, training and any infrastructure or compatibility requirements relevant to the site.
  5. Normalize the cost and schedule comparison. Use the same planning horizon and operating assumptions; include downtime, lead time, parts, labour, conditional core credits, warranty and support.
  6. Verify reliability and service commitments. Get test evidence, acceptance criteria, warranty terms, service coverage and a parts strategy in writing.
  7. Check exchange-specific conditions. Confirm core rules, credit basis, pricing, stock, eligibility, shipment and geographic coverage for the exact component.
  8. Record uncertainties and decision triggers. Document assumptions and sensitivity cases, and specify which findings—such as teardown condition or delivery timing—would change the choice.

How to make the final call

Choose remanufacture or rebuild when the condition assessment supports the proposed scope, the restored asset fits the mine’s future requirement, and the combined cost, schedule, reliability and support case compares favourably with a properly scoped replacement. Choose replacement when the existing base machine cannot be restored to the required condition, no longer fits the intended work, or the replacement proposal better meets the mine’s operating and timing needs over the chosen planning horizon.

If neither proposal can be evaluated on a comparable basis, the next step is not to guess from age, hours or headline price. Resolve the missing inspection, scope, delivery, warranty or cost assumptions first, then document why the selected option fits the asset and the mine plan.
