Don’t make rat poison at home. A homemade mixture is not a verified or controlled rodenticide and can expose people, pets, and wildlife to harm. For a U.S. household, start by removing food and entry points, then use a rat snap trap or, if needed, a registered rodenticide exactly as its label directs.
Why homemade rat poison is not a safe solution
Poison products are formulated and regulated for specific uses; mixing household substances does not provide the same controls or reliable instructions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that rodenticides use different active ingredients and mechanisms, and that bait or poisoned rodents can harm pets and non-target wildlife. A bait station can reduce access when used as directed, but it does not eliminate risk. EPA’s rodenticide safety review explains these hazards and mitigation measures.
For construction and building maintenance, the durable fix is to address the conditions that let rats enter and find food. Poison does not seal a gap, repair a door, or remove an accessible food source.
Choose a control method that fits the problem

These are household options described by the EPA’s guidance on dealing with rodent infestations. A rat snap trap is a physical alternative to poison; no specific brand or model is tested or endorsed here.

Start with prevention in the building
- Remove accessible food. Store food and pet food securely, clean up spills, and avoid leaving food waste accessible.
- Look for routes inside. Inspect likely entry points, including gaps around doors, service penetrations, and other openings. Repair or seal openings using a method suited to the location and building material.
- Reduce shelter and clutter. Keep storage organized and avoid leaving materials or debris where rodents can hide undisturbed.
- Use a trap if activity continues. Place it where rats travel but children and pets cannot reach it; follow the trap’s instructions.
The EPA lists prevention as a household control option. If activity persists or the source is unclear, professional pest-control help may be appropriate.
If you use a rodenticide in the U.S., follow the product label
EPA describes consumer rodenticide products as ready-to-use bait stations, with block or paste bait secured inside the station supplied with the product. Consumer loose-bait forms are not permitted under the U.S. restrictions EPA describes. EPA’s instruction is direct: “Always read the product label and follow all directions when using pesticides.” See Safely Use Rodent Bait Products.

- Use only a product whose label permits the intended indoor or outdoor location.
- Keep bait stations inaccessible to children and pets; do not treat a station as risk-free.
- Store pesticides away from children and pets, and never beside food or pet food.
- Promptly remove and dispose of dead rodents as directed on the product label to reduce the chance of secondary poisoning of pets and wildlife.
Station protection and weather-resistance categories affect where a particular station may be placed. Check the label for the exact site rather than assuming an indoor product can be used outdoors. EPA explains these distinctions in its guidance on choosing a bait station for household use.

In the U.S., EPA says second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides are no longer registered in products geared toward consumers; those products are registered for commercial pest-control and structural pest-control markets. Professional-use products are a separate regulated category with different packaging and use conditions. Do not assume a professional product is suitable or authorized for household use.
