To deadhead a hydrangea, use sharp, clean hand pruners to remove the faded flower head, cutting just above a pair of healthy buds or a lateral branch. The safe timing depends on the type: bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, while panicle and smooth hydrangeas bloom on new wood. If you are unsure which kind you have, remove only the spent flower stems rather than cutting the shrub back.
Where to cut a spent hydrangea flower
- Find a faded flower head and follow its stem down to a pair of healthy buds or a lateral branch.
- With sharp, clean hand pruners, make a neat cut just above that point. Clean tools help make a precise cut and minimize damage, according to UGA Cooperative Extension.
- Stop once the spent flower stem is removed if your goal is deadheading. Cutting other stems to reshape or reduce the shrub is broader pruning and can affect flowering.
When to deadhead each hydrangea type
Hydrangea type matters because some kinds carry next season’s flower buds on existing stems, while others flower on new growth. These are general type-based recommendations; climate, cultivar, and pruning purpose can affect the best date.

| Hydrangea type | Where next season’s flowers form | Deadheading and pruning timing |
|---|---|---|
| Bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) | Old wood | Remove faded heads after flowering. Avoid late-season, fall, or winter pruning that could remove next year’s buds. Minnesota Extension says buds set in August–September and advises pruning after flowering before August; check your local conditions and cultivar. Some reblooming cultivars also flower on new growth, but do not rely on that unless you have identified the cultivar. See Minnesota Extension’s hydrangea guidance. |
| Oakleaf (Hydrangea quercifolia) | Old wood | Remove faded heads after flowering and prune lightly to avoid cutting off potential flowers. |
| Panicle (Hydrangea paniculata) | New wood | It can be pruned in late winter or early spring before growth starts. You can leave dry flower heads over winter for visual interest. |
| Smooth (Hydrangea arborescens) | New wood | It can be pruned before spring growth. Pruning to reduce size is separate from removing spent flowers. |
For old-wood types, UGA Cooperative Extension also recommends deadheading after flowering and cautions against over-pruning, especially for bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas. See its comprehensive pruning guide.

Should you leave the dried flower heads?
Yes, if you like their winter appearance. Leave the dry heads on the shrub and remove them in late winter or spring if desired. This is an option for all types; it is not necessary to deadhead immediately after flowers fade.

If you do not know which hydrangea you have
Limit the work to the spent flower stems and avoid hard pruning. That keeps you from unnecessarily removing stems that may carry next season’s flowers, particularly if the shrub is an old-wood type. Wait to reshape or cut back the plant until you can identify its type and account for its flowering habit.
