A saw’s scale gives you a starting point; the assembled test pieces show whether the angle works across the full project. Inspect both the inside and outside edges, adjust the blade in small increments, and repeat before cutting your finished parts.
Prepare the saw and set an approximate angle

Make the throat plate flush with the saw table. Attach a wooden extension to the miter-gauge face and square the extension to the blade.

Disconnect power before making adjustments. Use the saw’s built-in gauge to set an approximate blade tilt.

Refine the setting with a protractor and sliding bevel gauge, or with a digital angle gauge. Brace the gauge consistently so it cannot rotate while you take a reading and give a false result.

A sliding bevel gauge transfers an angle from a drawing or workpiece to the saw setup. Fine Woodworking advises pulling the blade all the way through the gauge head so the blade’s round end does not keep the gauge from sitting flat: Fine Woodworking’s bevel-gauge guidance. A digital angle gauge measures blade tilt directly; a protractor can be used with a sliding bevel to set an approximate angle. These are different setup approaches, not tools shown to be more accurate than one another in a controlled comparison. The test assembly is the practical check.
Test the angle with project-matched scrap

Rip test strips from scrap matching the project parts’ width and thickness. Cut them into roughly 8-inch sections, beveling one end of each. Use a stop block to keep the other ends consistent in length.

Divide the pieces into two equal groups. Tape the outer corners of each group together to make two half-assemblies.

Bring the untaped ends of the halves together. Butt them together without flexing the taped pieces; bending the halves can conceal a fit error.

Inspect both the inside and outside edges of the joined assembly. Look for where the gap appears before changing the saw setting.
WOOD Magazine describes this process as a way to set and validate accurate bevels: WOOD Magazine’s guide to cutting gap-free bevel joints. The adjustment is repeated at every joint, so a small angle error can become more apparent around the assembly. For example, an octagonal project repeats the adjustment across eight joints; that is an illustration of cumulative error, not a measured accuracy statistic.

Adjust according to where the gap appears

Gap at the inside corner: tilt the blade closer to vertical.

Gap at the outside corner: tilt the blade more.
Make only a small adjustment, cut another set of test pieces, and assemble them the same way. Keep the test stock and checking method consistent so you can tell whether the change improved the fit. Do not move on to project parts until the test assembly closes as desired.

Separate angle fit from cut smoothness
A joint can have the correct angle and still have rough cut edges. DEWALT’s DWS780 instruction manual says that material, blade type, blade sharpness, and rate of cut all affect cut smoothness. For smooth molding and precision work on that model, DEWALT recommends a sharp 60-tooth carbide blade and a slower, even cutting rate. That recommendation is specific to the DWS780; check the manual for your own saw’s blade size and compatibility: DEWALT DWS780 instruction manual.
Bevel joint or mitered corner?
The terms describe different setups. In the DWS780 manual’s example, a 90-degree corner made from two 45-degree bevel cuts is a bevel joint. A mitered corner instead uses a zero-degree bevel with the miter arm set to 45 degrees. Confirm which joint you need before setting the saw.
