For clean flutes, control four things: the cutter path, spacing, start and stop points, and depth. On flat trim or pilasters, a plunge router with a round-nose core-box bit and a snug sliding guide is a practical setup. On turned spindles, index the work evenly and guide the router with stops. In either case, lay out the pattern and test it on scrap before cutting the finished piece.
Choose the setup for the workpiece
| Setup | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Shop-made sled or carriage | Flat boards and stopped flutes | Fit it to the stock; allow smooth travel while preventing sideways drift. Plan for spacing adjustment and reliable endpoint control. |
| Purpose-built router fluting jig | Repeated flutes on boards within the jig’s capacity | Check router compatibility, adjustment range, and workpiece width. Rockler lists its jig for boards up to 9.5 inches wide: Rockler Router Fluting Jig. |
| Lathe-mounted router guide | Cylindrical or tapered turned work | Check that the guide works with the lathe’s indexing system and the spindle’s shape, and that flute length and depth can be controlled. |
Cut flutes on flat boards
Build a guide that slides without wobbling
Use a plunge router fitted with a round-nose core-box bit. A sled or carriage should straddle the workpiece and constrain the router to a straight path. Fit matters: excess play can shift the flute spacing, while a binding guide makes consistent travel difficult. Shop-made approaches for flat work are described in Fine Homebuilding’s fluting jig guide.
Set flute positions and endpoints
Lay out the flute centers on the stock and transfer those positions to the guide. Depending on the jig, lateral positions may be set with guide-bushing holes or other repeatable indexing points. For stopped flutes, add stops to set where each cut begins and ends; account for the router-base offset when positioning them. One described method cuts alternating positions, then rotates the sled to route the remaining ones. Follow the setup details in Woodworker’s Journal’s stopped-flute method.
- Mark flute centers and endpoints on the workpiece.
- Set the guide’s lateral positions and endpoint stops to match the layout.
- Make a practice cut on scrap of the same thickness and check spacing, length, and depth.
- Adjust the jig if needed, then cut the finished piece using the same setup.
Choose the bit and depth for the profile
Fine Homebuilding’s jig example uses a 1/4-inch-diameter bit for smaller flutes and a 5/8-inch-diameter bit for larger ones; the author typically sets that jig to about 1/4-inch depth. These are examples for that setup, not universal dimensions. Select the cutter profile and depth to suit the intended appearance and the stock thickness.

Cut flutes on turned spindles
Index the work at equal intervals
Mark the flute length, then divide the spindle’s circumference into equal angular positions. The Woodcraft example uses a lathe with 24 detents, each 15 degrees apart. For six flutes, it indexes every fourth detent. That count applies to the example; use equal intervals compatible with your lathe’s indexing system. See Woodcraft’s turned-work method.
Set the guide, stops, and depth
Align the router guide with the spindle and use the endpoint marks to position the stops, allowing for the router base’s offset. Make successive light cuts until you reach the intended depth instead of taking the full depth at once. Keep downward pressure on the router carriage: a deep plunge can cause the cutter to pull the router upward.

- Premium Tungsten Carbide Construction: Features YG6X-K10 original carbide tipped,NOT the recycle carbide. Hardness can reach HRA92.5°,1.0μm,TRS 2500 N/mm²,with minimal wear and longer life;left no scars, skips or tear out.
- Silver induction brazing for maximum strength and durability, heat resistant coating provides superior wear resistance and rust and corrosion prevention
Keep cuts clean and prevent burning
- At flute ends: Lighter cuts or a ramped approach can reduce burning where the bit enters or leaves the cut. Fine Woodworking describes both techniques in its table-leg fluting method.
- With a purpose-built jig: Rockler’s manual advises moving the router in and out of cuts quickly to help prevent burning. Use the manual’s guidance for that jig and keep the router under control: Rockler Router Fluting Jig instructions.
- Throughout the cut: Keep the guide moving smoothly, maintain the set depth, and avoid forcing a cutter through a pass that feels unstable.
These notes describe particular methods and equipment. Prioritize controlled cuts and the instructions for the jig and router you are using.
