A wet saw is recommended for most straight cuts in the Porcelain Tiles Ltd guide; diamond cutters or core bits are used for holes. These are careful-work methods, not a guarantee against breakage: tool choice and operating instructions must suit the specific tile and job.
Why large-format tile needs a different approach
A large tile or slab can be difficult to support and control during cutting. If a piece falls or remains unsupported, it can break. That makes support and handling part of the fabrication method, not an afterthought. MAPEI recommends two people for the relevant handling operation so a cut piece does not fall or break.

There is no single setup established here for every tile, thickness, cut, or worksite. The manufacturer guidance distinguishes among straight cuts, round holes, and cutouts, and it does not promise that any method will be crack-proof. Treat the guidance below as a way to choose and organize the work; confirm blade, bit, speed, feed, water delivery, and dust controls against the instructions for your tile and equipment.
Choose the method for the shape of the cut
| Cut needed | Method described in the guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Most straight cuts | Wet saw with a diamond blade; MAPEI also describes a disk cutter running along a guide. | Tool suitability depends on the tile, cut, and equipment instructions. The disk cutter can make through or partial cuts. |
| Long straight cut | A cutting guide and carriage. Porcelain Tiles Ltd specifies this system for 1500–3000 mm cuts. | This is that guide’s recommendation for the stated cut range, not a universal threshold or guarantee for every slab. |
| Round hole | Diamond cutter or core bit; Italon specifically recommends a wet diamond core bit for round holes in maxi-size porcelain. | Choose a diameter that matches the required opening and check bit and tile compatibility. |
| Rectangular opening or inside corner | Drill round holes at the corners, then connect them with blade cuts. | The corner holes reduce stress that may arise during cutting; they do not eliminate all risk of cracking. |
Diamond tooling is the common thread in the manufacturer guidance, but the sources do not rank brands or establish one blade or bit as suitable for every tile. Make the decision by cut geometry, cut length, wet or dry operation, compatibility, and whether the work surface supports the whole piece.

Before cutting: prepare the tile, work area, and tools
- Confirm the cut and tool. Mark the intended line or opening and identify whether the job calls for a straight cut, a round hole, or a multi-direction cutout. Check the saw, guide, blade, bit, and tile manufacturers’ instructions for compatibility and operating requirements. Do not assume that a tool suitable for one tile or cut is right for another.
- Plan stable support. Arrange the work so the tile is fully and stably supported during the operation. Consider how the piece will be handled as the cut is made; a cut section that falls can break. For the handling operation addressed in its guidance, MAPEI recommends two people to help prevent a cut piece from falling or breaking.
- Set up water or dust control. Decide whether the approved method is wet or dry. MAPEI says to keep the area wet for wet drilling, or remove the resulting dust during dry drilling. Italon’s maxi-size slab guidance recommends wet diamond drilling for round holes. Use the controls specified for the equipment and work environment.
- Put on protective equipment and arrange ventilation. Porcelain Tiles Ltd calls for eye, boot, and hand protection and recommends ventilation during fabrication. Italon also lists eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, respirators, and tool covers for mechanical work. Follow the tool instructions and applicable site safety requirements for the specific operation.
- Recheck the layout. Check that the guide or tool path aligns with the marked cut and that the planned opening will connect as intended. This is especially important for a rectangular cutout: each corner needs a drilled round hole before the connecting cuts are made.
How to make a straight cut
For an ordinary straight cut
Porcelain Tiles Ltd recommends a wet saw for most cuts. Use a diamond blade suited to the tile and the cut, and follow the saw manufacturer’s procedure rather than improvising a feed rate or blade setting. Keep the tile fully supported, align the cut to the mark, and maintain stable handling throughout the operation.
MAPEI describes a disk cutter running along a guide. Its manual says this approach can make through cuts or partial cuts and can produce a cleaner, more defined edge than cutting and breaking. That is a source-specific description, not a promise that every guided system will produce the same finish on every tile. Confirm the system’s intended use and operating procedure for the material at hand.
For a long straight cut
For cuts in the 1500–3000 mm range, the Porcelain Tiles Ltd guide recommends a cutting guide with a carriage. Set the guide on the marked line and follow the system’s instructions for the specific slab and blade. The stated range belongs to that guide’s recommendation; it should not be read as a universal dividing line between tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore starting, consider how the full tile and the piece being separated will remain supported as the cut progresses. MAPEI recommends two people for the relevant handling operation to prevent a cut piece from falling or breaking. Do not proceed with an arrangement that leaves the tile or a cut piece unsupported.

How to drill a round hole
Use a diamond cutter or core bit suitable for the tile. MAPEI describes starting with the cutting head at an angle; once it begins cutting, press down and use a small circular movement. Italon specifically recommends wet diamond core bits for round holes in maxi-size porcelain. Follow the instructions for the actual bit and drill; the described motion is not a substitute for equipment-specific directions.
- Confirm the opening size. Match the bit diameter to the fixture or other opening required, and verify compatibility with the tile and tool. A bit’s advertised size is not automatically the right size for the job.
- Choose wet or dry drilling only as permitted. For wet drilling, keep the cutting area wet as MAPEI directs. With a dry method, remove the resulting dust during drilling. Do not apply a wet or dry technique that conflicts with the equipment instructions.
- Start and continue according to the tool procedure. MAPEI’s described approach starts the cutting head at an angle, then uses a small circular movement after cutting begins. Keep the tile supported and control water or dust throughout.
The sources do not specify a universal drill speed, pressure, water flow, or hole depth. Those depend on the tool and its instructions; do not substitute a guessed setting for the manufacturer’s requirements.
How to cut a rectangular opening or inside corner
Do not begin a rectangular cutout by making sharp, intersecting blade cuts into the tile’s inside corners. Drill a round hole at each corner first, then make the connecting cuts. Italon recommends corner holes made with a water-fed drill and a round diamond bit, followed by cuts between the holes with a diamond blade; it explains that the holes relieve stress that may arise inside the tile. MAPEI likewise says that when cuts are needed in two directions, a hole should be drilled in the corner first.

- Mark the opening and identify its corners. Check the layout so the holes and connecting cuts form the intended opening.
- Drill a round hole at every corner before connecting the cuts. Use a suitable round diamond bit. Italon describes a water-fed drill and wet diamond bit for this work; follow the actual bit and tool instructions for wet operation.
- Make the connecting blade cuts. Cut between the corner holes with an appropriate diamond blade, following the saw or cutting system’s procedure and keeping the tile supported.
- Handle the finished opening carefully. Keep the piece stable while completing the operation and handling the cut section. The corner-hole method reduces stress that may arise; it cannot guarantee that the tile will not crack.
Wet and dry work: control water and dust
Wet and dry drilling require different controls. For wet drilling, MAPEI says to keep the area wet, and Italon’s round-hole recommendation for maxi-size porcelain is a wet diamond core bit. For dry drilling, MAPEI says to remove the resulting dust during drilling. These instructions do not establish one universally appropriate method for all tools, materials, or workplaces.

Follow the tool manufacturer’s directions for water supply and dust control, and use the protection and ventilation appropriate to the operation. Porcelain Tiles Ltd recommends efficient ventilation and approved eye, boot, and hand protection for fabrication. Italon’s mechanical-work list includes eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, respirators, and tool covers. Use the requirements that apply to the equipment and worksite rather than treating this list as a substitute for safety instructions.
Finish the cut edge
A freshly cut edge can be rough or sharp. MAPEI’s large-format tile guidance describes cleaning and smoothing sharp or uneven cut edges with a diamond pad or abrasive disk. Use an appropriate abrasive and follow its instructions. Handle the edge cautiously during finishing; smoothing it is a finishing step, not a correction for an unsuitable cut or unsupported tile.
Choosing and checking tools
Start with the opening or cut you actually need, rather than choosing a tool by its name or advertised size alone. For a straight cut, compare a wet saw with a guided cutting system based on the length and type of cut, then confirm that the blade is suited to the tile. The Porcelain Tiles Ltd installation guide, version V.24.012, recommends a wet saw for most cuts and a guide with carriage for linear cuts from 1500 to 3000 mm. MAPEI describes a guided disk cutter for through or partial cuts. These approaches are not ranked as universally superior: the slab, cut, machine, and support arrangement matter.
For round holes, compare the required diameter with the bit’s actual size and verify that the bit is intended for porcelain or the specific tile. QEP’s official product page lists a 1-3/8-inch diamond hole saw for porcelain tile with water delivery and an included drill guide. That is one concrete example, not a default size for plumbing or other openings: 1-3/8 inches is about 35 mm, and many fixtures require a different diameter. Check the opening specification, bit compatibility, and drill-guide arrangement before buying or starting.

For sheet or large-format work, RUBI describes its TC-125 kit as a system for ceramic sheet and large-format tile, with a diamond disc for porcelain stoneware. That makes it a relevant example of a purpose-oriented cutting system, not an assurance that it suits every slab or job. Check the specific kit configuration and its instructions against the material and cut. Neither the QEP nor RUBI product descriptions establish a universal setup, and the guidance here does not provide pricing or a performance ranking among brands.
A useful comparison is therefore practical rather than brand-led: Is the cut straight, round, or rectangular? How long is the straight cut? Does the tool require wet operation, or how will dry dust be controlled? Is the blade or bit compatible with the tile? Can the whole piece and the offcut remain supported? If any answer is uncertain, resolve that before cutting instead of relying on a product label alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Letting the slab or offcut hang unsupported. Large pieces can fall or break. Plan support for the tile and the separated piece throughout the cut, and arrange another person’s help for the handling operation where needed.
- Choosing a tool before identifying the cut. Straight cuts, long straight cuts, round holes, and rectangular openings call for different approaches in the cited guidance. A tool meant for one geometry should not be assumed appropriate for another.
- Making square inside corners with intersecting cuts. Drill a round hole at each corner before connecting the cuts. This can relieve stress but does not make the operation risk-free.
- Assuming one hole-saw diameter fits every fixture. The QEP example is 1-3/8 inches (about 35 mm); match the size to the actual required opening and verify compatibility.
- Improvising a speed, feed, pressure, or water setting. The cited guides do not give universal operating values. Follow the saw, drill, blade, and bit instructions for the specific task.
- Ignoring sharp edges after cutting. Clean and smooth sharp or uneven edges with an appropriate diamond pad or abrasive disk, following its instructions.
If the cut or hole is not going to plan
- The tile or a cut piece is not fully supported. Stop and revise the setup before continuing. Unsupported material can fall or break; stable support is a core requirement for the operation.
- The planned tool does not match the geometry. Reassess whether the job is a straight cut, a round hole, or a cutout. The guidance uses a wet saw for most straight cuts, a guide and carriage for specified long cuts, a diamond cutter or core bit for holes, and corner holes before connecting rectangular cuts.
- A rectangular cutout has no corner holes yet. Drill round holes at the corners before making the connecting blade cuts. This reduces stress that may arise during cutting but does not make cracking impossible.
- Wet or dry controls are unclear. Stop and check the equipment instructions. Keep the area wet for wet drilling; remove dust during dry drilling. Do not invent a water, speed, or feed setting.
- The edge is sharp or uneven after cutting. MAPEI describes smoothing sharp or uneven edges with a diamond pad or abrasive disk. Follow the abrasive’s instructions and continue to support and handle the piece carefully.
What a careful method can—and cannot—do
Stable support, diamond tooling matched to the operation, appropriate wet or dust controls, and round corner holes for multi-direction cutouts all address identifiable risks in large-format tile fabrication. They do not establish a no-crack guarantee. The cited guidance does not provide breakage rates, a universal tool setup, or fixed operating values for every tile and worksite. For the particular slab, tool, and cut, the equipment and tile manufacturers’ instructions remain decisive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to cut a straight line in large-format porcelain tile?
Porcelain Tiles Ltd recommends a wet saw for most cuts. For 1500–3000 mm linear cuts, its guide recommends a cutting guide with a carriage. MAPEI also describes a diamond disk cutter running along a guide. Choose a system that is compatible with the tile and cut, and fully support the slab and cut piece.

How do you drill a round hole in large-format tile without cracking it?
Use a suitable diamond cutter or core bit. MAPEI describes starting the cutting head at an angle, then pressing down and making a small circular movement once it begins cutting; follow the actual tool’s directions. For wet drilling, keep the area wet. With dry drilling, remove dust during drilling.
Why drill holes at the corners of a rectangular tile cutout?
Round holes at the corners relieve stress that may arise when connecting cuts meet inside the tile. Drill the holes before making the blade cuts between them. The method reduces risk but cannot guarantee the tile will not crack.
Should large-format tile be cut wet or dry?
Use only a method permitted by the equipment and tile instructions. MAPEI says to keep the area wet for wet drilling and remove resulting dust during dry drilling. Italon recommends wet diamond core bits for round holes in maxi-size porcelain. There is no single method specified for every tool and worksite.
Recommended Free Tools
What size diamond hole saw should I use for porcelain tile?
Match the diameter to the fixture or opening specification and check compatibility with the tile and drill. For example, QEP lists a 1-3/8-inch (about 35 mm) diamond hole saw for porcelain tile with water delivery and an included drill guide; that size will not suit every opening.
Can I cut large-format tile alone?
Large-format pieces need stable support, and MAPEI recommends two people for the relevant handling operation so a cut piece does not fall or break. Arrange assistance when needed to keep the tile and offcut controlled; do not continue with an unsupported piece.
How do I smooth a cut edge on large-format tile?
MAPEI describes cleaning and smoothing sharp or uneven cut edges with an appropriate diamond pad or abrasive disk. Follow the abrasive’s instructions and handle the tile carefully during finishing.
The Bottom Line
For safer large-format tile fabrication, fully support the slab, select a compatible diamond tool for the cut geometry, and follow its wet, dry, and operating instructions. Drill round holes at the corners of rectangular cutouts before connecting the cuts, and plan handling so no piece can fall. These steps reduce avoidable stress and damage risk, but no method here guarantees a crack-free result.
