Face a window or light source instead of putting it behind you, diffuse harsh light, reduce competing ceiling lights, and match the light’s color to the room. One correctly positioned light will usually improve your video more than an expensive webcam or a three-light studio setup.
The ideal Zoom lighting setup
Start with this arrangement:
- Place the camera at eye level.
- Put a window or diffused LED panel in front of you, about 15–45 degrees to the left or right of the camera.
- Keep the light at or slightly above eye level and angle it gently toward your face.
- Use a sheer curtain or diffuser to soften direct light.
- Turn down harsh ceiling lights.
- Keep the background moderately lit, but not brighter than your face.
- Add a weaker fill light only if one side of your face remains too dark.
A natural-looking image has even facial brightness, soft-edged shadows, visible detail in highlights and darker areas, accurate skin color, and no distracting reflections in glasses. “Brighter” is not automatically better: excessive light can create shiny hotspots, clipped highlights, and a washed-out face.

Zoom’s lighting guidance recommends controlled, indirect or diffused light and balanced brightness across the face and room.

Optional: weaker reflected fill on the opposite side
Avoid: bright window directly behind your head
Step 1: Use a window before buying equipment
Daylight can be the best free light when it is controlled. Place the camera between you and the window, or sit slightly to one side while facing the window. If direct sunlight creates hard shadows or makes you squint, close blinds or use a sheer curtain.

Do not sit with a bright window directly behind your head. The camera may expose for the window and leave your face dark while the background becomes overexposed. Logitech also advises avoiding strong backlighting in video meetings.
Window light is attractive but inconsistent. Its direction and intensity change through the day, and a setup that works in the morning may look dark or overly contrasty later. Zoom specifically notes that daylight can substantially affect the camera’s exposure. If you work across different times of day, use curtains and a controllable artificial light, or test the setup during the hours when important calls occur.
Also avoid mixing uncovered cool daylight with a strong yellow ceiling lamp. Choose the dominant source and either match the other light to it or turn the conflicting light down.

Step 2: Position one artificial light correctly
A broad, diffused source slightly off-center is the best general-purpose arrangement for ordinary calls, interviews, presentations, and classes.
Height and angle
Place the light at eye level or slightly above it. Aim it down gently toward your face. A source that is too low can shine upward and create unnatural shadows; a ceiling light that is too high can darken the eye sockets and create shadows under the nose and chin.
A light directly beside your face creates stronger modeling and more contrast. A light directly above the camera creates flatter, more symmetrical illumination. For most work calls, placing a large source 15–45 degrees to one side is a useful compromise.
Distance and softness
A larger source produces softer shadows than a small bare bulb at the same distance. Use a diffuser, a shaded lamp, or bounce the light off a nearby white wall. If the light creates a bright forehead or nose hotspot, move it farther away, reduce its brightness, or increase diffusion.
Do not judge a light only by its lumen rating. Lumens describe total output, not the amount reaching your face. Distance, beam angle, diffusion, and room reflectance all affect the result. Adjust the light while watching the Zoom preview rather than choosing a supposedly correct lumen number.

- USB-Powered Convenience: Powering the ring light with a stand is a breeze via USB ports. It's compatible with devices that support USB ports. For optimal performance, we recommend using an adapter or wall outlet that delivers a 5V/3A current, ensuring the Weilisi light operates at its maximum power mode.
Step 3: Match the color of the light
Color temperature describes whether light appears warm or cool and is measured in kelvin (K). These are useful starting points:
| Setting | Typical appearance | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000–3,500 K | Warm | Rooms dominated by warm household bulbs |
| 4,000–4,500 K | Neutral | General office-style starting point |
| 5,000–5,600 K | Cooler daylight-style | Setups dominated by daylight |
There is no universally correct kelvin setting. The practical rule is to avoid mixing a very warm face light with cool daylight unless you want that deliberately mixed appearance. A 5,600 K setting describes the apparent color of the lamp; it does not reproduce the intensity or full spectral characteristics of outdoor daylight.
Color temperature and color rendering are different. Color rendering, often represented by CRI, concerns how accurately a light reproduces colors. A high-CRI lamp may improve color fidelity, but it does not guarantee adequate brightness, soft shadows, correct exposure, or flattering placement.
Step 4: Control the rest of the room
Lighting the face is only half the job. The camera is also reacting to the background and reflective surfaces.
- Turn down or switch off harsh overhead lighting if it creates eye-socket shadows.
- Move away from a very bright window or shade it.
- Keep bright monitors, white walls, and reflective objects from competing with your face.
- If the background is very dark, add a low-power room or background light instead of making the key light uncomfortably bright.
- Avoid sitting immediately against a wall, where shadows become more obvious.
- Keep the face the most important stable bright area in the frame.
A modest difference between the face and background usually looks more natural than either a completely flat room or a background that overwhelms the subject.
Which type of light should you use?
Soft LED panel: best general recommendation
A medium or large diffused LED panel is the most flexible choice for regular calls. It can sit beside or above the monitor, move off-axis to reduce glasses reflections, and often provides brightness and color-temperature control. Its disadvantages are desk space, mounting hardware, and a higher price than a basic lamp.
Ring light: convenient, but not universal
A ring light works well on a small desk with a centered webcam, or for beauty and creator work where frontal fill is desirable. However, direct frontal light can look flat, and the circular source may appear as a reflection in glasses. Small ring lights can also be harsh when placed close to the face.
Place a ring light slightly above eye level and start at low brightness. If the ring appears in your lenses, move it farther to the side, raise it, tilt it downward, or replace it with an off-axis panel.

Desk lamp: an effective low-cost option
A shaded, dimmable desk lamp can work very well. Place it in front of you rather than behind you, use a broad shade, and avoid a bare bulb or narrow directional beam. You can bounce the lamp off a nearby white wall to create a larger, softer source.
Monitor-mounted light: best for small or shared desks
A monitor light is portable and quick to set up, especially for laptop users. Its small size and close position to the camera can create frontal light and glasses reflections, and the monitor must safely support the mount. Prioritize brightness control and adjustable color over decorative RGB effects.
Do you need key, fill, and backlights?
For a normal Zoom call, one good key light is usually enough.

Add a weaker fill when one side of your face is too dark, especially if the key is deliberately positioned to one side or the room has dark walls. The fill can be another lamp, light bounced from a white wall, or a white poster board placed near the shadow side.
A background or hair light is optional for a more produced presentation or recording. It can help separate dark hair or clothing from a dark background, but it is not a default requirement. Three lights also create more opportunities for color mismatch, glare, clutter, and overexposure.
How bright should the light be?
Start at low brightness and increase it until your face is clear. Stop before the forehead, cheeks, or nose become shiny white areas. Check the image while wearing glasses and while moving slightly in your chair.
Zoom’s room-design guidance suggests approximately 20–30 foot-candles of vertical illumination on faces, equivalent to roughly 215–323 lux, and 10–15 foot-candles on walls, or about 108–161 lux. These are conference-room lighting guidelines, not a mandatory webcam threshold. Logitech’s 30-lux figure is specifically identified as a minimum working illuminance for its C670i webcam, not a universal requirement for every camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn practice, positioning and the camera preview matter more than chasing a number. A 1,000- or 2,000-lumen light may be insufficient when it is far away or heavily diffused, and excessive when it is close to your face.

Fix common lighting problems
| Problem | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Dark face | Backlighting or insufficient front light | Face the window or light source |
| Washed-out face | Light too close or too bright | Dim it, move it back, or shade the window |
| Hard shadows | Small or undiffused source | Diffuse it, bounce it, or use a larger panel |
| Glasses glare | Light too close to the camera axis | Move the light higher or farther sideways |
| Orange or blue skin | Mixed color temperatures | Match the dominant source or turn one off |
| Grainy video | Too little light causing camera gain | Add soft illumination to the face |
| Background dominates | Background is brighter than the subject | Reduce background brightness or add face light |
Glasses glare
Fix reflections by changing geometry rather than simply adding brightness:
- Move the light farther to the side.
- Raise it above eye level and angle it downward.
- Move it farther away and increase brightness slightly if necessary.
- Use a larger diffused panel instead of a small bare source.
- Turn the monitor slightly or adjust your head angle.
- Check for reflections from the monitor as well as the key light.
Two panels can be worse than one if both reflect in your lenses.
Washed-out skin
Lower the light intensity, move it farther away, diffuse it, and shade a bright window. Check any webcam exposure or HDR controls. White clothing directly below the face can also reflect light upward. Zoom’s low-light correction cannot restore highlight detail that has already been clipped.

Dark scenes force many webcams to increase gain, producing noise and muddy detail. First add or reposition soft light, remove backlighting, and clean the camera lens. Upgrade the webcam only after the lighting is reasonably controlled.
Configure Zoom before the call
In the Zoom desktop app, the documented route is:
Profile picture → Settings → Video & effects → Camera
Depending on your platform, account, permissions, and app version, labels and available controls may vary. Zoom documentation also references alternative navigation in versions 6.7.0 and higher. Useful controls may include:
- Adjust for low light: Auto or Manual; useful for dark video, but not a replacement for physical lighting.
- Portrait lighting: Brightens the foreground and dims the background. Use it as a finishing tool, not a solution for backlighting.
- HD: Enables higher-definition video when supported by the camera and connection.
- Touch up my appearance: Optional smoothing that can make the image look less natural if overused.
If Zoom makes your face unnaturally bright or your background artificially dim, reduce or disable Portrait lighting and Touch up my appearance, then correct the physical setup first. See Zoom’s video enhancement guidance.

Buying guide: choose by use case
| Reader need | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Free improvement | Window with a sheer curtain and a white wall or poster board for fill |
| Cheapest artificial setup | Shaded or diffused desk lamp placed in front and slightly to one side |
| Tiny desk or laptop | Compact monitor-mounted light with brightness control |
| Best everyday upgrade | Adjustable diffused LED panel that can move off-axis |
| Creator or phone-camera use | Ring light or larger panel, depending on glasses and desired look |
| Glasses wearer | Off-axis diffused panel rather than a centered ring light |
| Multiple people | Larger panel or two matched lights placed broadly and symmetrically |
When comparing products, prioritize source size and diffusion, brightness control, color-temperature adjustment, off-axis placement, mounting stability, power, heat, noise, portability, and physical controls. A $20 diffuser or a repositioned existing lamp may improve your video more than a premium light placed incorrectly.

Advanced situations
Dark skin and strong contrast
Do not choose brightness based on a light-skinned face. Test for preserved detail in both highlights and shadows, and favor larger, softer sources. High CRI can help color fidelity, but it does not determine exposure or whether placement is flattering.
Virtual backgrounds
A virtual background does not correct poor face lighting. Uneven illumination can make hair and shoulder edges harder for software to separate. Balanced foreground and background lighting generally creates better conditions for background replacement.
Multiple people
A single desk light may not cover everyone. Use a broader source, move it farther away, or use two lights with matched color temperatures. Avoid separately lighting people with mismatched warm and cool sources.
Recommended Free Tools
Manual camera controls
If your webcam supports manual exposure or white balance, use them only after the physical setup is stable. Reduce bright background extremes and make the face the most important area of the frame. Automatic exposure can shift when a white shirt, document, or window enters view.
